While course-centric learning defines much of corporate learning today, this approach cannot keep up with the speed of change, nor can it provide adequate performance support.  Organizations seeking to improve learner engagement to drive performance outcomes must address the following key issues: How do we develop a learning strategy that focuses on the learner? What do learners need from learning programs to be engaged and successful? What must be included in learning programs to ensure an effective experience? Which tools and technologies should organizations leverage as part of the learner experience?

American corporations today spend an estimated $160B annually on learning and development initiatives. Yet employees forget up to 75% of the material taught, meaning up to $120B of that investment is wasted. It’s no wonder that 70% of organizational transformations fail - organizational transformation starts with individual transformation. This eBook will detail the phases of successful individual transformation, from Learning to Doing to Being, incorporating the latest evidence from fields across the behavioral sciences.
A sales rep turns a corner while driving to one of the biggest calls of the year when a jolt from under his car forces a change of plans: he just ran over a pothole and now needs to swap out his tire, except he’s never actually done a tire change by himself before. There’s no time to wait for AAA so he must figure it out himself. What does he do? In 2019, he calmly pulls up YouTube and watches a user-generated video demonstration of exactly how to perform the tire change on the make, model and year of his car, before turning around, grabbing his tools, and successfully executing the task himself. Within twenty minutes he’s back on the road driving toward the meeting feeling ready for anything. This is what it feels like to be ready in a world where you can pull a device out of your pocket and extract whatever day-to-day lessons you need from somebody else’s life experiences. Sales reps already use consumer apps like Waze to learn about open routes in real time based on other drivers’ experience of current road conditions, or Duolingo so they can practice and learn new languages using friendly competition with other would-be travelers. But what about the tasks involving the actual substance of salespeople’s work? What if our rep were to hit a different kind of "pothole" that day: one in the form of a text message from his internal champion letting him know that the company’s CFO would be joining the call unexpectedly? He doesn’t normally call on CFOs, and would need a five-minute debrief with a colleague to understand the pertinent discussion points to use, but no one is available right now. Teaching as a Design Science Blended learning has traditionally been thought of as a combination of digital and face-to-face learning components. However, as we move towards a greater dependence on technology, the definition of blended learning is changing. An effective blended learning program simply needs to contain a variety of learning elements. These can include virtual or in-person workshops, eLearning modules, learning games, and components that sit outside of all of these, like line manager check-ins and coaching sessions. The work of Professor Diana Laurillard is central to our blended learning design process. In her book 'Teaching As a Design Science1', she discusses how various learning approaches may be supported by technology. We’ve created a blended learning methodology inspired by her work which we use to create blended solutions for a range of clients. This ebook will talk you through the five key elements of effective blended learning design—from understanding how learning works through to the technologies we can use to enhance it. We’ve also included some stories from real projects we’ve worked on to help add some context.
Finding New Ways To Connect Learners The workforce is still adjusting to the new reality of a changing workplace. Many employees continue to work remotely, or on a hybrid schedule. This further complicates employee collaboration, especially as it relates to learning and development. No matter where an employee starts or ends their workday, the ongoing need for person-to-person collaboration is essential for the organization’s success. Adapting learning and development programs to serve this new workforce is not without its challenges. The creation of engaging learning experiences is no longer a top-down structure, as many employees are choosing to have a say in the process. Individual learners are increasingly creating their own learning content to offer their personal knowledge and experience on how to be successful in their respective roles. Leveraging peer-to-peer learning for all employees requires a modern learning solution that can connect learners despite distance and can accommodate custom content that is highly personalized to the organization. Helping learners find the help they need quickly and contribute to the conversation is an excellent way to boost collaborative learning efforts within the organization. In this eBook, we focus on a few ways to boost collaborative learning programs. Topics include: Responding to Workplace Culture Changes Connecting Mentors to Learners Peer-to-Peer Learning Real-time Collaboration Learning Tech Flexibility in Teams
