Stealing Pumpkins From the Pumpkin Patch from Mr. Kirsch on Vimeo.
Stealing from the Pumpkin Patch
Purpose of Activity:
Students will practice dodging, chasing, and fleeing skills in a dynamic setting.
Prerequisites:
Students should understand the strategy for dodging, chasing and fleeing and how to perform those skills safely in general space. They need to know how to use flag belts properly.
Suggested Grade Level:
3-5
Materials Needed:
8 hula hoops, 8 gator skin balls (preferably orange in color), cones to mark off the field, flag belts for each student. Strobe Light.
Description of Idea
This activity is a lot like Capture the Flag and is best suited for a large gym or outside, but it can be played with smaller classes in a small gym.
Set up: Split the playing area in half and split the class into two teams, assigning one team to each side. Set up four hula hoops at the back of each side with each hoop containing a gator skin ball (pumpkin). Make another line across the playing area about 10-15 feet in front of the hoops to designate the safety zone.
Directions: Players must try to steal a pumpkin from the other side’s patch without getting their flag pulled. Players cannot get their flag pulled if they are on their side of the center line or in the other teams "safety area." If a player steals a pumpkin without losing a flag, that player will place the pumpkin in one of its team’s hoops. If a player’s flag is pulled off on the other side, they must return to their side and perform 10 Jack-O-Lantern Jumping Jacks and try again. The goal of each team is to obtain all 8 pumpkins and place them in their team’s pumpkin patch.
Variations:
Adjust this activity to accommodate larger classes by setting up two fields with the necessary equipment.
Assessment Ideas:
Assessment of the student’s ability to dodge, chase, and flee can be done by observation.
Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:
Students with mobility problems can be assigned to play defense and pull flags. Students in wheelchairs can be pushed by other players and carry the pumpkin.

Scooter Scramble from Mr. Kirsch on Vimeo.
Scooter Scramble
Purpose of Activity:
To demonstrate scooter safety and cooperative skills using group challenges.
Suggested Grade Level:
K-2
Materials Needed:
One scooter per student, four different colored jerseys, four garbage cans marked with one colored jersey, unlimited equipment (balls, beanbags, etc.)
Description of Idea
Remind students about the importance of scooter safety.
Discuss with students the importance of working together as a group for a common goal. After explaining the challenge to the group, allow time for each team to listen, discuss, and make decisions that will help reach their goal.
Divide teams into four groups. Each team member is given a scooter and randomly scattered against the gym walls. The four garbage cans and other equipment is scattered throughout the gym.
The challenge is for team members to scramble using their scooter, collect equipment (only one at a time), and place the equipment in the garbage can marked with their colored jersey. Members must stay on their scooters. When no equipment is left, teams count the equipment they collected in their garbage can.
Equipment is scattered again. The new challenge is to collect more equipment than previously.
* This lesson makes a great instant activity when using scooters.
Variations:
1. Change team members by switching jerseys. 2. Identify only certain equipment to collect (only beanbags, only balls, only red equipment, etc.)
Teaching Suggestions:
1. Teacher walks around and corrects students not demonstrating scooter safety. 2. Teacher encourages cooperative skills.

Sink the Battle Ship from Mr. Kirsch on Vimeo.
Sink The Ship
Purpose of Activity:
To throw balls using correct overhand technique in a dynamic setting.
Activity cues:
Overhand Throwing Cues, Catching Cues
Prerequisites:
Knowledge of the overhand throw, the ability to catch a thrown ball.
Suggested Grade Level:
3-5
Materials Needed:
Pins, mats, gatorskin or soft balls.
Description of Idea
Two teams of three play against each other across the playing area or gym. Set up the gym so you have one mat (ship) for each three students. Have the players in the game agree on how far the mats will be from each other. On the floor in front of each mat, set up four pins. Place a scooter (lifeboat) and four gator skin or soft balls (ammunition) on the mat to start.
Designate someone to ride the lifeboat (scooter). The person on the scooter is the only person who can retrieve balls from the sea (gym floor) and bring them back to their mat (ship). However, the students on the mats may catch thrown balls or reach for them on the floor keeping one foot on the mat. The students on the mat are trying to knock down the pins at the other mat by throwing balls using correct overhand technique. At least one foot must be on their mat at all times.
When all the pins by your mat are knocked down, set them up and restart the game with another person on both teams lifeboats.
Variations:
After all teams have played at least one game have them select another team to play.

Volleyball (Serving Game)
State Standard: 1, 3
Equipment: Volleyballs (or beach balls), Nets
Grade: 5-8
Purpose of Event: Demonstrate the appropriate steps in serving a ball in Volleyball.
Time: 10-15 minutes
Description:
Great game to practice serving, after learning the proper technique. Lots of reps and serving accuracy is accomplished in this mini-game that groups one team up against another to be the team with the best serving accuracy. A must-try as part of a volleyball unit.
Players from each team stand in spot on their side of the court, opposite from a teammate who is the starting server.
On the signal, the server from each team keeps trying to serve to their teammates.
If a ball is caught, the player who caught it becomes a server as well, and joins the first server.
First team to get all players up and serving wins the round!
Concerns: Move safely in general space.
