"Crowd" Design Learning Activities?2. A GREAT Webcam for Webinars.3. Advance Discounts - Understanding Travel Realities. 1. "Crowd" Design Learning Activities? What if we gave a "CROWD" of experienced workers in your organization a challenge to "DESIGN" a totally new learning activity?  What if we asked 500 managers to collaboratively design a new "manager skills" program?  What if we went from a few SMEs to harnessing the "Wisdom of the Crowd" as a design strategy? I have become intrigued with experiments to shift from a single designer and SME to tasking a larger or enormous "crowd" of employees with the design process for a new learning activity. This will challenge the traditional role and power assumptions of instructional designers and even subject matter experts. But, it actually takes the idea of crowd-sourcing and integrates it with UserContent, Social and Collaborative Learning and On-The-Job Training. Here is an article that I just wrote about Crowd Learning Design and some of the upcoming experiments that we are planning: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/crowd.html 2. A GREAT Webcam for Webinars: I lead about 8 to 12 webinars each week - on almost every tool and video conferencing system.  So, I am always on the lookout for an improvement in webcams.  This week, I hit the jackpot.  I am now using a new webcam: Logitech C930e Webcam for Business. While I don’t endorse or evaluate products, on a personal note, I am in love with this webcam. It has instantly taken the clarity and focus of our video-based learning and collaboration programs up major notches.  Here are a few of the features: * Full HD 1080p Video Calling.* H.264/SVC Video Compression.* 90° Field of View.* 4X Zoom in 1080p.* Carl Zeiss Certified Lens.* Integrated Autofocus.* External Privacy Shutter.* Built-In Dual Stereo Mics. I bought mine at: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/977620-REG/logitech_960_000971_c930e_webcam_usb.html 3. Advance Discounts - Understanding Travel Realities:  We are very excited about the registration levels for our upcoming Learning 2013.  We are now at almost 900 registrations. We took 35 registrations today alone. Normally, on Sept 3rd we would raise the rates approximately $100 per person. But, I have received so many emails from colleagues asking if we could keep the discounted rate for several more weeks as corporate travel policies are more difficult.  Folks want a bit more time to get their permissions to come to Learning 2013, and we listened. Given our strong registration rate and the tightened complexity of travel approvals, we have issued a new Advance Rate, which will be active until late October.  While this causes some anxiety when ordering our cool event bags, name badges and appropriate amounts of coffee, everyone in Learning must be more agile to allow for more flexibility and last-minute registrations for all activities. We have also extended the ability of our participants to request Corporate Billing and, if needed, cancel closer to the event without penalty. Please access our website at http://www.learning2013.com to take advantage of the Discounts with your Advance Registration Rate.  And, we look forward to learning and collaborating with you in Orlando. Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - Sept 9, 2013.#789 - Updates on Learning, Business & Technology.56,194 Readers - www.masie.com - twitter: emasie - The MASIE Center.Host: Learning 2013 - Nov 3 to 6 - Orlando, Florida - www.learning2013.com Special Note: "Live Long & Prosper - Design Session with George Takei" Design takes time, collaboration and creativity.  Last night, I spent an hour with actor George Takei at the music club 54 Below doing a joint design of his keynote session for Learning 2013. We were both there to hear a concert by friend Telly Leung, so it was the perfect time to design the format and focus of George’s keynote on Tuesday, November 5th.  Here is a look at the design conversation: As the former Lt. Sulu, largest social media figure on Facebook, accomplished actor and profound storyteller dove into the heart of Learning 2013, we came up with this "map" of his time at Learning 2013: Storytelling as Focus:  George will recount, in an interview with me, the role of storytelling in his career and the power of stories to inform, influence, change and impact culture. Social Media and Stories:  We will provide real-time examples of how a single "Post" by George takes off with the over 4 million people in his network. Images, Humor and Opinion:  George will share how he uses images (often a cartoon or photo) with just a few words to make a posting impactful and forward-able.    From Star Trek to Facebook to Broadway:  We will do an interactive dialogue with George looking at the lessons and aha’s from Star Trek, Facebook and Media, all the way to his new Broadway show. Storytelling and Change: George would like to share how storytelling can be a powerful tool in changing attitudes, perspectives and policies.  He has been on the forefront of the dialogues about Equality, Justice and Acceptance.  And, what happens when people differ! Questions from Mobile Devices:  Some of the questions that we will pose to George will come from participants in real time as they use our Mobile App.  George and I will have a large screen near us to pick the questions.    Google Glass:  I have been a source of technology experiences for George, having given him his first tablet and a 3D Printer.  We took some time with the new Google Glass and talked about the role of field experimentation in innovation.  And, how these would have been used on the Enterprise.    Excitement: George is really excited to be a part of Learning 2013.  He will be spending several days with us in Orlando and is intrigued about how our field is leveraging culture, technology and design to share stories, build skills and create change.    Immersion and Prosper: George is going where no Star Trekker has gone before - our Learning event!  So, he wants to immerse.  He is doing prep on our field and will be doing a deep immersion when he gets to Learning 2013.  Don’t be surprised if he comes up to you in the lobby at Walt Disney and starts chatting about what people really want to help them learn.  Welcome George. May we learn together and as learners prosper! Here is a blog post of our Design Session at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/prosper.html There are now 937 colleagues registered for Learning 2013, to be held from Nov 3 to 6, 2013 in Orlando.  Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton is our featured keynoter, along with George Takei and others. Just read a fascinating article by Adam Grant, author of "Give and Take", on "Why Some People Have No Boundaries Online!" He looks at different styles of how employees either integrate or segregate the social and work aspects of their lives. Here is the link to his article: http://tinyurl.com/labopp4 2. 1,000th Registration Today - Yeah! This morning, our 1,000th colleague registered for Learning 2013!  It is fun to watch dozens of colleagues register every day.  And, we want to celebrate the 1,000th Learning Colleague. She is Kathie Miller, Senior Vice President at Nielsen. We will have a special Disney gift for Kathie when she arrives in Orlando on November 3rd. Join us at Learning 2013! One question is how much do learners use "highlighting" of words, sentences or sections while using eBooks? I would love to get TRENDS readers’ thoughts on the role of highlighting as you use an eBook for learning. Meetups Meet Learning - Let’s Connect!2. 100 Perspectives On Learning - New List.3. Hash Tags at Work  - Social Tagging for Context. 1. Meetups Meet Learning - Let’s Connect! Imagine if your organization had a robust daily list of employee "Learning MeetUps" that would be 1 to 2 hour gatherings - at lunch time or during a segment of the day - when 2 to 30 people gathered with the same interest or learning requirement.  For example, the list for tomorrow might include: - Learning MeetUp for New Salespeople Representing the Alpha Product Line.- Learning MeetUp for Recent Relocated Employees to Headquarters.- Learning MeetUp for Folks Improving their Conversational Spanish.- Learning MeetUp for Understanding New Due Diligence Statute. These MeetUps would be organized in two ways: either a location where folks could get together for 60 to 120 minutes and support each other’s learning or a shared video space where the same thing might happen globally across the enterprise. Some MeetUps might happen just once, some could have a weekly occurrence or even be on demand. There are no formal agendas and the participants would rate the value on a 1 to 5 scale.  And, MeetUps would start or go away as situations and requirements change. They are user organized and user shaped. There is an existing MeetUp site and organization that is sponsoring this process in communities around the world. But, what if we took it inside and extended the MeetUp model as an extended part of the learning atmosphere? We are so intrigued with this idea that I am adding it to Learning 2013, where we will have a room set up for Learning MeetUps throughout the conference. There will be no agendas but a few sentences outlining what this group could achieve in collaborative conversations. Stay tuned for details and our findings. 2. 100 Perspectives On Learning - New List: Talking about content for Learning 2013, our design team is now in the final 10 days of curating and developing an agenda for over 140 sessions. Today, we posted a list of the almost 100 organizations that have employees who are leading, facilitating, collaborating or teaching at one of these sessions. These are sessions with learning stories, design challenges, 360 views of a learning process or a great debate about a key issue. Check out the list and a sample of the session topics at: http://learning2013.com/blog/item/presenters.html  Soon, as the Program Guide goes to press, we will post a complete agenda for Learning 2013. We now have 1,079 colleagues registered and dozens more signing up every day at http://www.learning2013.com 3. Hash Tags at Work - Social Tagging for Context: The Hash Tag or # sign in front of a few words got popular on Twitter and was recently adopted and embraced by Facebook. We are now seeing #tags being integrated into content at the workplace. For example, as a colleague posts a comment in a shared or social setting like Jive or SharePoint, they may choose to use a current tag and add #policychanges or they may add their own tag with a context or emotion such as #ohmyyy or #SeptemberCycle. One can then either sort on these tags or set up a scroll that shows items with selected tags. There is a mixture of organizational tags in a sort of taxonomy of tagging or "social tags" that come from the individual user and may or may not be adopted by others. Watch for tags as I add my Elliott tag: #trendscan :) Yours in learning, Elliott MasieHost, Learning 2013 email: emasie@masie.comtwitter: @emasie MASIE Center Seminars, Events and Services:* Learning 2013 - November 2013 - Orlando, Florida.* Membership in The Learning CONSORTIUMInfo and Registration: http://www.masie.com - twitter: emasie

Learning Trends & Challenges Webinar in 2013 - Oct. 2nd: Each year, I host a free, one hour webinar on Learning Trends & Challenges.  Several thousand colleagues from around the world participate as we detail the trends, perspectives and disruptions in our field.  Here is this year’s invitation: Learning Trends & Challenges in 2013.Hosted by Elliott Masie.October 2, 2013 - Noon Eastern (9 AM Pacific) - One Hour Duration.Free of Charge. To Reserve a Place: http://www.masie.com/2013directions Space is limited, so please reserve early. 2. Google Glass in the Bathroom? - Oooops! Every new technology creates new realities and unexpected challenges. I am one of the Google Glass Explorers, and have been wearing my Glasses in a range of situations, from shopping to waiting rooms to meetings and even in airports.  Well, the last one created an Ooops. I was in a major city airport and was wearing my Google Glass as I navigated between flights.  For those unfamiliar with Google Glass, it has an option of wireless access to the web, taking pictures or videos and a range of emerging apps that allow me to read, capture or communicate while looking through a translucent screen in the lens. So, between flights, a trip to the men’s bathroom made sense. And, I was standing there, not recording, but with my Google Glasses on, when a stranger next to me got freaked. He worried that I was taking a picture of him in a private moment. Which I was NOT!!  But, the first edition of Google Glass does not display if your camera is on, so that is not a wild assumption. It took a few minutes of discussion and actually a demonstration of Google Glass to not just the man who reacted, but several others in the bathroom.  All worked out just fine - but for a moment I wondered if I would end up on a Google Glass Predator List and be restricted from going to public bathrooms in the future.  Lesson learned?  There are lessons to be learned in every new technology innovation. And, the cultural aspects or even threats are not known at the start. We will need to be more digitally overt about indicating when one is capturing or recording.  Google should add something that indicates recording underway to protect the privacy of people on the outside of the lens and the reputation of the person wearing the lens. 3. Building a Learning Bistro: The Learning 2013 Design Team is very excited about creating our first Learning Bistro at the event on November 3rd.  We are taking one of our big ballrooms and converting it into a varied and folksy environment that will include: * Small tables to pre-arrange "Learning MeetUps" with 1 or 10 colleagues with the same issue or curiosity.* Cafe furniture to sit and chat with new colleagues - or spend time processing some ideas from the sessions.* Coaching areas - where colleagues can stop in for coaching with a resource - or reserve time with a 30 Under 30 colleague.* Registration - we are moving our Registration area to the Learning Bistro at the start of the conference - to mix checking in and chatting and collaborating.* Online Connections - adding power cords and extra wireless access to help folks keep in touch back "home".* Some Entertainment - we will add some times with Entertainment, Pecha Kucha and at night some surprises.* Coffee Without Foam - sharing truth with TRENDS colleagues: would love to do foam drinks - but conference fees for 1,600 people drinking cappuccino would be more than we are paying for all of our speakers.* Real-Time Activities - additional sessions and activities will be added to the Learning Bistro throughout the event. If you are not signed up for Learning 2013, please take advantage of the Advanced Registration Discount and special rates at our Disney Hotel.  Go to http://www.learning2013.com for details. We are delighted and thrilled to announce the Cast for our Learning 2013 Concert & Party, to be held on Tuesday night, November 5th.  This year, we reached out to 4 incredible, well-known and amazingly talented stars from Broadway and the world of music.  We are pleased to present our Learning 2013 Concert Cast: * Adam Pascal (Rent, Chicago, Memphis)* Telly Leung (Glee, Godspell, Allegiance)* Eden Espinosa (Wicked, Brooklyn)* Marcus Paul James (In The Heights, Rent) We have woven together 4 incredible Broadway Stars - from top level musicals - for a special Concert and Party. They will rock you with songs and music that celebrate "learning". Participants and their families will be entertained by this group for 90 minutes. And, afterwards our DJ will continue the party, including introducing a new dance called "Personalize It". Details and photos at  http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/concert.html 2. Video is Getting Shorter and Shorter! One conversation I keep having with learning colleagues is about the length of videos and the impact on learning attention. The length of videos used to be a predictable 60 minutes or 30 minutes. They mirrored the length of an hour or 1/2 hour television show. If you bought a video from a training vendor, it was normally 30 or 60 minutes. Then, video started to shrink to 15 minute segments. Then, as online video became more prominent in corporate learning, the length started to shrink to 5 to 8 minutes in duration. In the last year, we are seeing more and more 3 minute or even shorter videos used. Some organizations are even playing with one minute micro-video. Is it effective in smaller lengths? Almost no research is available at this time. But, we do know that users are staying around for shorter amounts of time - regardless of the length. In other words, they are starting a 25 minute video but often leaving after 3 or 4 minutes. The learning world needs some operational and cognitive retention research on the impact of shorter and shorter videos!  The length is being shaped by our default assumptions of what is a good length and non-work video watching of a non-entertainment video is measured in minutes counted with one hand, often using just 2 or 3 fingers. We need to develop better templates, models and evidence-based research on how to get the most knowledge, value and learning assistance from shorter and shorter videos. We need to remember that viewers of Netflix are often doing a 6 hour "marathon" stream of programs like "Orange is the New Black". Video consumption - at home and at work - will be more and more personalized. Let’s get ready! MagicBands by Disney at Learning 2013: Many of the participants at our Learning conference to be held in Orlando on November 3rd will be wearing new MagicBand wristbands from Disney. These optional RFID bands are being rolled out to the Disney Properties and the Learning 2013 crew is being invited to be a test and feedback group. Participants will have the option of being some of the first people at Disney to receive a wearable, personalized, RFID wristband that can be used to access their room, charge in the gift shops, access health clubs and other elements. And, if they plan to add some time to visit Disney Parks, the "MagicBand" will allow them to pre-select FastPass and optimize/personalize the experience. Clearly, this is the next step in Disney’s digital approach to personalization and targeted customer service. Someday, meetings will have the option of using these types of devices to allow 30 second conference registrations. And, they can even be used to certify time in a compliance based workshop.  This year, Learning 2013 won’t be using the MagicBands in our processes, but we are interested in working with Disney to get feedback, ideas and advice on how these technologies may shape meetings in the future. (Participants can select a digital card, in addition to the MagicBand, if that is their preference.) To read more about this, go to: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/magicbands.html 2. A Time to Kill - Drama Opens on Broadway: As you may know, I am also a producer of Broadway plays and musicals. I am very excited that John Grisham’s A Time to Kill is in previews and about to open in New York City. It is a powerful thriller about justice and what each of us might do when something horrible happens to our child. Tom Skeritt and Senator Fred Thompson are two of a great ensemble cast, performing on a stage that will take you right into the courtroom drama. For Learning TRENDS readers, here is a special rate/discount: http://www.broadwayoffers.com/go.aspx?MD=2001&MC=TKFNSFMY2 If you do get a chance to come to Broadway to see A Time to Kill, please send me a note afterwards with comments and thoughts. Graphic Recording of Content - From a Distance!2. 3D Scanner Arrives - Scanning Objects into "Printables".3. Disney Hotel Rooms - Please Reserve Soon. 1. Graphic Recording of Content - From a Distance! I love Graphic Recording.  An artist/recorder listens to a speech and draws a graphical representation of key points and themes. It adds a richer and deeper "curation" of the content and provides a second perspective on the topics addressed.  In fact, I tend to revisit these graphic charts way more than my notes or a copy of a PowerPoint slide stack. This year at Learning 2013, we will have a Real-Time Graphic Recording done by an artist that is listening/watching from the West Coast, creating a detailed graphic representation that will be displayed during the session - and sometimes even available live to participants on their mobile devices.  Afterwards, these will be shared openly, as one edited perspective of the event. To see an illustration of our Graphic Recording model and to explore the implications of a distributed graphic recorder, check out my blog at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/graphic.html We are seeing more and more "distributed" learning and facilitation roles, with leaders, curators and expertise located "wherever" and integrated digitally into live experiences. 2. 3D Scanner Arrives - Scanning Objects into "Printables": Yesterday was a fun day for me at The MASIE Center Lab.  I received one of the first Makerbot Digitizers, which allowed me to take a small object and have it scanned as it rotated, creating an in-depth 3D diagram that can be printed on a 3D Printer.  After about 20 minutes of calibrating the rotating platform and laser scanners, it was ready to rock and roll.  I took a small ceramic character - about 4 inches tall - and in 9 minutes it was scanned and ready to print.  Wow! The implications for the future of the growth and simplification of the 3D printing process has huge implications for manufacturing, retail and even learning. The ability of a learner to understand a key object - by printing it - is intriguing.  Check out the printer that we are experimenting with at:  http://techcrunch.com/2013/09/22/hands-on-with-the-brooklyn-made-makerbot-digitizer/ 3. How Many Meals to Order for 1,654 Learning Colleagues? Let me take you behind the scenes of the planning process for Learning 2013 - as the countdown is just 17 days before we start in Orlando, Florida.  The program content is now finalized, the Guide is at the printer and online and the A/V equipment is ordered.  But, in the last two weeks - many of the Design decisions shift to predicting the exact number of people —- and making a "bet" on food orders!  You see, we will order severl hundred thousands of dollars of food - and numbers mean everything! Just like a big wedding, the food costs are based on how many people will be attending.  Unlike a wedding, we will serve food from Sunday afternoon (coffee) through Wednesday breakfast - with 6 big meals and loads of breaks.  So, how many cookies to order for an afternoon break or how many people will get up for Wednesday breakfast after a cool party the night before.  It is all about numbers.  And, as the author of the new ASTD book, Big Learning Data, this really is a BIG data question. So, how many people will be at Learning 2013?  Right now, we have approximately 1,507 people. On a daily basis we are taking about 18 to 22 more registrations.  So, our projections - with only a few last minute cancels, take us to a projected number of 1,643.  However, once the government shutdown ended, we took some Federal employee registrations.  And, more and more people are waiting to the very last minute to register.  But, using the "Elliott Curve", we are pretty confident of the 1,645 target.  However, not everyone comes to eat every meal. Over 30 years, The MASIE Center, has developed our own formulas for predicting how many people will arrive at Learning 2013 by time breakfast is served on Monday morning, November 4th.  And, how many of them will eat breakfast before the first session.  Our predictor is about 87%  But, we adjust that as the hotel gives us updates - and we have to make our final final head counts for food 3 days prior to each meal. Our guarantee to our participants is that there will be food for them exactly when it is scheduled - and our guarantee to Disney is for an exact amount of food for them to prepare and serve.  And our goal is to get those two numbers close - without wasting food or dollars. Just like planning a wedding, you have to account for special needs and changes.  Disney is fully equipped to handle people with unique eating requirements and people are not shy about alerting us to medical food needs.  And, the logistics of preparing to serve a hearty and complex lunch to 1,643 people (give or take a handful) - is immense.  Throughout Learning 2013, there is a major team from Disney, working with our Conference Manager, to make sure that the dozens of food carts are filled, just the right temperature and ready to roll out at exactly 6:45 for Breakfast or noon time for Lunch. Design for an event is often a mixture of designing the learning experience - and also designing the community and hosting experience.  So, for the next 17 days, our team is closely watching the daily registration numbers and the "Elliott Curve" - adjusting the number of Ice Cream Pops that will be handing out to each of you - as you come to the Broadway @ Learning Concert with 4 Musical Singing Stars on Tuesday night. Learning Personalization Self-Confidence Rises.3. Last Minute Registration Open Now! 1. 800th Edition of Learning TRENDS Today! I just noticed that Learning TRENDS has hit the 800th edition mark. So, I went to our archives and saw that the first TRENDS was sent on Nov 19, 1997. I had just finished one of our TechLearn Conferences and thought that it would be fun to have an occasional email digest that was sent to a few hundred colleagues. TRENDS became (and continues to be) a professional and personal digest from Elliott Masie and The MASIE Center. And, it grew. We now have 56,293 email recipients - some being recirculated to thousands of additional colleagues. I made several design decisions along the way, including keeping it a simple (non-HTML) email to get through most corporate email firewalls, not selling ads or branded titles and never circulating the mail list to any other organization.  TRENDS is my way of communicating about a range of topics, including learning, training, performance and, on a personal side, my Broadway Productions.  If you would like to see archived Learning TRENDS from 1997 go to: http://trends.masie.com 2. Learning Personalization Self-Confidence Rises: I have been tracking shifts in how learners talk about their expectations as workplace learners.  In the past 24 months, we have seen a noticeable increase in learners desiring and selecting (or demanding) greater personalization in their learning choices. These phrases are spoken often by learners: * Do you have a SHORT video on that topic?* Can I take that program remotely rather than travel to the class?* Is there a digital version of that Learning Manual that can be used on my tablet?* If I can pass the test, do I have to take the compliance program again?* Can I see ratings by other employees on each of those courses so that I can choose the best one?* Is there a simulation where I can practice my new skills?* What is the name of a worker who is an expert in this new topic that I can use for support? Learning Personalization is following the rise of people’s increased use of personalization in how they consume content at home - from media and other sources. The shift is being felt at work in a clear and growing pattern. 3. Last Minute Registration Open Now! In the world of ever-changing business cycles, learning colleagues often have to make their conference attendance plans later and later. As of today, we have 1,551 colleagues registered for Learning 2013, which will start the evening of Sunday, November 3rd.  Yet, there are over a hundred additional participants that will register for Learning 2013 in the next two weeks. This year, we have made Last Minute Registration as simple and friendly as possible.  There is a discount rate for registering online before coming to the event.  And, we have reduced the cancellation rate to just $100 since we know that corporate plans can suddenly change. We are holding a block of discount rate rooms at the Coronado Springs Hotel and are even adjusting our food orders daily, based on last minute registrations. We look forward to seeing you at Learning 2013, whether you registered on January 5th or will make a Last Minute Registration in the next two weeks.  See you in Orlando!  Details at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/lastminute.html Yours in learning, Elliott MasieHost, Learning 2013 email: emasie@masie.comtwitter: @emasie MASIE Center Seminars, Events and Services:* Learning 2013 - November 2013 - Orlando, Florida.* Membership in The Learning CONSORTIUMInfo and Registration: http://www.masie.com - twitter: emasie

I rarely write about an App, but this one is both fascinating and game changing for personal "big" data transparency.  If you use Firefox, I would urge you to download a free add-on app called Lightbeam. Using real-time visualization, it will monitor how any sites that you visit are tracking your presence - with or without your permission/knowledge. The result is a set of Infographics that is a powerful and personal view of the degree of "Data Exhaust" that each of us is creating to be monitored.  As an active student and analyst of the ups and downs of Big Learning Data (see next item), I believe that we will have radically greater transparency of our own data sets, including what learning or knowledge data is being harvested about us.  Take a minute to download and explore Lightbeam: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/lightbeam/ 2. Big Learning Data Book Released: ASTD is releasing our latest book Big Learning Data at Learning 2013.  It is a project by our Learning CONSORTIUM, with chapters on the benefits and challenges of Big Learning Data by a dozen learning leaders from organizations around the world. It is also the fastest book publishing process that I have ever experienced as we wanted to reduce the time from writing to release in this rapidly changing field. Most of the authors will be at Learning 2013 and it will be sold there by the ASTD Bookstore. Info on Big Learning Data and online ordering at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/bigdata.html 3. Training My Way to Learning - Choo Choo! I am on the first leg of my annual Train Trip to Florida for Learning 2013.  For the past decade, I have taken the overnight from New York to Orlando, with a comfortable bedroom to view the backyards of America on the way to our annual event. This year, I will be taking the train from NY to Washington DC on Monday for a few presentations and meetings. And, on Tuesday night at 7:30 pm, I’ll be boarding Amtrak’s Silver Meteor for an overnight trek through DC, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL. http://tinyurl.com/ElliottTrip It is a perfect way to make the transition from my role in Saratoga Springs to the Host/Curator role at Learning 2013. There are interesting people and good food on board - and great views of America - with tunes from my iPhone playing along the way. If you live along the route, I’d love to call you (at a decent hour). Send me a note to emasie@masie.com  One of my fantasies is to someday put together a 2 week long Train for Learning Trip - with a hundred colleagues visiting each other’s corporate learning sites along the way. Dear Learning TRENDS Reader, I am now in Orlando, Florida at Walt Disney World and in just 72 hours, 1,630 colleagues from around the world will be arriving for Learning 2013.  So, what does the Design Team do in the last 72 hours?  Is it calm and orderly, like a Big Greek Wedding, or what?  Here is a sample of the final Design and Logistics that are underway: * Building a 60 foot wide stage and screen - 20 techs have already arrived this morning to hang, construct and create a Broadway level stage and AV setup in Walt Disney’s Coronado Ballroom.* Secret Service and Secretary Clinton’s Advance Team are on site working with me on the detailed and seamless process of hosting Secretary Hillary Clinton.  Having hosted President Clinton and other senior keynoters with governmental security, this is less disruptive for us.  It is all about creating a very specific plan and process.* Trucks with "stuff" are arriving at the hotel as I type, delivering supplies, equipment, registration materials and bags with Program Guides for everyone.* Final Food Counts: Today is when we have to make our best and most accurate "bet" on how many breakfasts and lunches we want to guarantee to Disney for our food minimum on Monday.* Last Minute Shifts: With 170 sessions being led by almost 220 people, someone will call today to sadly say that they can’t come to Orlando on Sunday due to professional or personal crisis.  We are ready to adjust the online schedule when that call comes in.* Welcoming Early Arrivals: Yes, some people are already here - with families - to take advantage of Orlando fun before the event begins on Sunday. * Rewriting Wireless for 1,600 Connected People: We create an alternate, high speed wireless system throughout the Convention Center to give our participants better and more reliable throughput at the event.  But PLEASE don’t watch my good friend Uzo Aduba’s show Orange is the New Black during the General Sessions. No one has that amount of bandwidth :)* Last Minute Registrations: This laptop has just indicated that two people have registered while I am typing TRENDS. Last minute registrations are welcome! Just go to http://www.learning2013.com* Twitter in Place: If you can’t come to Learning 2013, we will share content and community with the wider world in two ways.  #learning2013 is our Twitter hash tag for the event and you can follow along from afar.  And, we will be posting a large number of content segments in the weeks after the event at http://www.learning2013.com I am honored to be hosting Learning 2013 and want to thank our Learning TRENDS readers for your support and interest in our process.  Wish us well and, as I will say to our Broadway Stars that are performing here, tell me to "break a leg"! Cheap Learning Apps for Your LMS: What if you wanted to schedule lunch meetings for 3 rising leaders with senior executives as part of their development program.  Great idea!  Now, ask your LMS to help schedule it.  Ask the LMS vendor how much it would cost to build a "Lunch Matching and Mentoring" function in your LMS - and sit down to hear the quote (5 figures, 6 figures?). Yet, you can buy an App for your smart phone that will do much more for $1.99!  What if we had Learning Apps for our LMS?  Seriously, what if there was a standard that allowed us to buy Apps that would add functionality to our LMS, safely and without recoding the base system, and do it for let’s say $1,000? Though, I would love to see some at $1.99, too! Here is an article on Apps for LMS Systems that I just published in ILT, a UK learning magazine: http://buff.ly/1blll9y 2. Singapore & Beijing, Next Stops! In a few hours, I will be boarding a plane for Singapore and then a week later for Beijing. Learning Perspectives from Beijing & Singapore! Hello (Ni Hao) from Beijing, China where I am delivering a keynote speech at the China eLearning Forum tomorrow morning.  A few days ago, I was honored to work for one day with 190 Learning Executives in Singapore.  Here are some learning and personal perspectives from conversations and observations: * Learning and Digital Learning are seen as key economic and career development issues in Asia.  People see the digital extension of learning - from online degrees to You Tube knowledge videos to Skype access to expertise - as a powerful tool to democratize access to education and radically shift the working opportunity curve for individuals.  There is less focus on the compliance process and more on how a dramatically larger number of people can have a dramatically larger knowledge and career curve. * Coming to You From a VPN:  The internet in China is increasingly available in homes, public places and on my mobile phone. Yet, there are key sites, including Facebook and some social media/search engines, that you cannot access from the "normal" internet.  I was advised to get a $10 a month account with a VPN that redirects my access to servers in LA, Seattle or other countries.  The IP address is shown as a foreign address and I can access my Facebook account or watch Hulu from my hotel room.  In fact, I am reaching the Learning TRENDS server through my VPN.  Ah, the multiple sides of any policy. * The MOOC as a Transformational Structure:  While few people have actually taken a Massive Open Online Course, there is much work underway to create versions of the MOOC offered by traditional, newly-formed and non-degree granting colleges.  My colleagues here in Asia see the MOOC as a way of breaking out of the 20-people-at-a-time limitation of the classroom and leveraging more social and collaborative design into "e" courses. * Thirst for New Instructional Design Models: I have had dozens of conversations with colleagues intrigued about new models of learning design, moving beyond ADDIE and reflecting a greater role for learner impact on choices.  They want more micro-level "modules" with smaller elements of content and testing, and a model that would tie these together into a course, program or style of study.  Many asked about "Daily Learning Models" where each learner receives a "Suggested Mini-Content Segment" each day predicated on his/her role, learning objectives and changes in the business. * US - Get Global Ready: I am struck at how different the "Global" readiness of colleagues and citizens here is compared to that of my peers in the United States.  Here are a few "global readiness" differences: - Airport Language Arrival: Four to five languages were reflected in the signs and speaking languages of airport staff.  I arrived in Beijing and was in line with a person from Spain and a couple from Russia.  They were able to interact and transact in their own languages. - Plugs in the Hotel: While I always carry several adapters on international trips, I have never had to use them as the hotels have global ready electrical plugs. Right by my bed were two USB plugs for digital device recharging.  Ask global visitors to New York City about the difficulty of getting an adapter for their room. - Global Work: There is a culture of working globally and awareness of not only currency, but also traditions, holidays and more about other cultures.  I have had eight suggestions for where I might have Turkey on Thursday as my colleagues (many of whom have not traveled abroad) wanted me to not "miss" my Thanksgiving.  Two asked if I could do "Black Friday" online for sales the day after Turkey Day.  Working globally requires a strong sense of respect for the divergent traditions and cultures of new colleagues. As learning professionals, we have a role in advocating for and building a stronger, global-ready workforce and workplace.  Increasingly, technology will allow organizations to access expertise from anywhere and our business and knowledge relationships will have to be globally ready.  Advocate for more language training in schools and promote awareness of the global aspects of your customers, colleagues and partners in the workplace. After spending time with several hundred learning colleagues tomorrow in Beijing, I will make my way over to Vietnam, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It is a great honor to meet and collaborate with learning colleagues in each of these countries.  From our conversations about Big Learning Data to sharing the vision of how to best mix face-to-face with technology in learning designs, I always come away with new ideas, new stories and, most of all, new friends. Have a Great Turkey Day and talk to you all soon. Hello from Vietnam - Remote Keynote, Search Learning & University eLearning! 1. Hanoi to Las Vegas - Remote, Blended Keynote to Autodesk!2. Search and Learning - Major Connections and Futures.3. University and eLearning: Meetings and Roles.4. Personal Notes. 1. Hanoi to Las Vegas - Remote, Blended Keynote to Autodesk! It is now 2:22 AM in Hanoi, Vietnam and I am about to deliver a blended, remote keynote all the way over to Las Vegas at the global Autodesk Conference.  Since I was traveling to Asia, the only way to keynote was to use a blended model. So, I made a 20 minute Learning Futures video tape before I left that is now being played in Las Vegas.  And, in about 15 minutes, we will shift to an interactive Q and A with hundreds of Autodesk colleagues.  Sure, we had to alert the front desk in Hanoi about the call and test the quality of the connection by phone.  And, it works. So, in a few minutes, I will pause the writing of this TRENDS and keynote over quite a distance.  Cool! 2. Search and Learning - Major Connections and Futures: I am more and more convinced that the learning field must do a deeper exploration of the role of search engines in learning design and delivery.  In each of the Asian countries that I am visiting, the role of mobile devices and search engines is dominating the conversation about the directions of learning. In Beijing, I had dinner with a colleague who is a leader at Baidu, the primary search engine used in China.  They are on a parallel and even more innovative path than Google.  We talked about the building of active API (computer interfaces) between learning design and search engines.  After I return to the US in about 10 days, we will start an exploration of how corporations can better leverage Search into Learning Design! 3. University and eLearning - Meetings and Roles: Today and tomorrow, I will be meeting with Learning Leaders at Vietnam National University in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) to discuss the role of changes in eLearning in the higher education and workplace readiness arena. For the past 10 years, Vietnam’s universities have been advocates for increasing the role of online learning to connect learners with remote colleges and to provide blended options for expanding classroom offerings.  Stay tuned for updates. 4. Personal Notes: The trip to Vietnam is quite exciting, including a home dinner with the family of a learning colleague whose Dad was an Army veteran and had fought deep battles in 1972.  We had great conversations about war, foreign policy and societal changes.  And, yesterday I took a Cooking Class that included a trip to the market to buy and eat a "fried River Maggot omelet", which was totally yummy. And, the remote keynote with Autodesk went great.  It was wonderful to hear the questions and perspectives from educators at that conference and to weave my current Asian learning experiences into the dialogue.  One of the interesting questions was how to support teachers and educators as they make the shift to using technology more creatively. My answer is that they must experience it first as learners to understand how to then use it as teachers. We must be learners as learning professionals. Xin chào (Goodbye). Mai mốt gặp lại (We’ll meet again soon).   Yours in learning, Elliott MasieHost, Learning 2014 email: emasie@masie.comtwitter: @emasie MASIE Center Seminars, Events and Services:* Learning 2014 - October 2014 - Orlando, Florida.* Membership in The Learning CONSORTIUMInfo and Registration: http://www.masie.com - twitter: emasie

Schoolhouse Rock - 41 Years Old & Powerful!2. CES Nuggets Curated from Vegas - Shifts in Tech Market.3. Video Grows Radically for Learning. 1. Schoolhouse Rock - 41 Years Old & Powerful! Yesterday, I read a great Twitter message from Billy Porter, the star of Kinky Boots (one of our Broadway production investments). Billy was highlighting that it was the 41st birthday of the start of Schoolhouse Rock. I immediately got a huge smile - remembering the short videos that combined music, learning, animation and spirit to teach kids (and adults) cool things.  Schoolhouse Rock was one of my introductions to what media and learning could do to make learning fun and engaging.  Here are two of my favorite Schoolhouse Rock videos: * I am Just a Bill! A lesson in the way that Congress operates (at least in those days): http://youtu.be/tyeJ55o3El0 .* Conjunction Junction! A grammar lesson that still vibrates in my brain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPoBE-E8VOc . Happy Birthday Schoolhouse Rock!  And, thanks to Billy Porter for the reminder. Say Yeah!! 2. CES Nuggets Curated from Vegas - Shifts in Tech Market. Every January, I either attend or remotely curate tech announcements and nuggets coming from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.  This year, I have been chatting with several colleagues and reporters at CES and here are some early impressions: * Gadget Spending Dropping. There is a $13 Billion drop in technology gadget spending … even though interest in mobile and apps are going up.  Why?  Most analysts see that folks now have a very high tech smart phone that can take video, photos, GPS readings and a range of options. Consumers are not saying, "Give me a new gadget to buy." They want better and faster and more personalized functionality - on existing devices. * 4X Video and Cloud, Cloud, Cloud. Personally, I am intrigued by two themes. In the video world, 4X is now going to be highly affordable. A major jump in resolution and definition will be available in a corporate video device that is only $1,400 (which was previously in the $90,000 range). We will explore the ways that 4X might be useful in simulations and other high def learning moments.  And, the conversations about Cloud, Cloud and Cloud are intriguing, especially as we see the ability to easily integrate software as a service from multiple vendors in the cloud. * Wearables. As one of Google’s Explorers, I have been fascinated and, in some ways, underwhelmed with wearables. I don’t use my digital watch (too heavy, awkward and not overly helpful). I am intrigued with health and wellness wearables.  I am waiting for the next generation of both Google Glass and other wearable glasses, contact lens inventions and more. There may be ways in which wearables will quite helpful with work learning, OJT and coaching. The idea of a work Performance Support system embedded in a wearable is intriguing.  Yet, there are Big Data issues and privacy concerns to watch.  I am monitoring a few of the announcements this week on wearables and will send an update at the end of the week. 3. Video Grows Radically for Learning.  We are tracking significant growth in the offering and use of video for learning at the workplace.  We are filling up my upcoming Video and Learning LAB that will be offered in Saratoga Springs in February. Your Learning Hackathon - Ideas Pleas: We are excited to announce that the Learning Hackathon, launched at Learning 2013, will happen at MIT on the weekend of February 21st and 22nd. In a nutshell, we will ask small teams of MIT and other engineering/design students to engage in a Hackathon that will create agile and rapid learning apps, solutions and approaches. For example, what would be a cool tool for a learner, a teacher, a designer or a subject matter expert? Imagine 2 days of ideas, invention, brainstorming and creation. There will be a prize for the winning team. And, we hope it will be sharable with learning colleagues around the world. So, help us out in our planning process. Can you send an email to me at emasie@masie.com with a few ideas of challenges or problems that you would like these Hackathon teams to tackle? Our planning meeting is on Monday afternoon, so send them along and it will help dramatically. Thanks to Ken Zolot and John Abele for leading this effort. Together, we will all benefit from the Learning Hackathon. 2. White House Education Datapalooza: Talking about Hackathons, next Wednesday I am honored to be attending the White House and US Dept. of Education’s second annual "Education Datapalooza". These follow two Data Jams at which more than 200 entrepreneurs and developers, college and university leaders, researchers and policymakers, along with students and others, came together to brainstorm ideas for new products, services, tools and apps to help students. At the Datapalooza, we will explore and celebrate these innovations and new venture ideas. President Obama has called for encouraging innovation in several key areas related to learning: * Increasing the quality of teaching and learning, including through technological approaches to learning and student support.* Finding ways to stimulate further innovation, including by encouraging competency-based education, dual enrollment, and facilitating students gaining credit for prior learning.* Empowering students with more information to help them make more informed decisions about college value, including deciding on where to go to college and how to pay for it. Info at http://tinyurl.com/ap9tduv  I will curate and send a blast from this gathering next week. 3. Learning Directions Events: NYC, Chicago, Houston and Silicon Valley! My Learning Thermostat - Google Buys Nest.3. Learning Directions Events: NYC, Chicago, Houston and Silicon Valley. 1. 12 Years a Slave - From Saratoga on Martin Luther King Day.  Yesterday, I went to see "12 Years a Slave," a powerful and provocative movie about a freeman who lived in my hometown of Saratoga Springs, NY, who is kidnapped in 1841 and sold into slavery in the Louisiana.  I wanted to honor Martin Luther King Day by seeing this movie and reflecting about the broad history of civil rights and slavery.  If you can, please go see this movie.  Here is a clip: http://youtu.be/pA-vxW3d3Fw 2. My Learning Thermostat - Google Buys Nest: Last week, I ordered the Nest Learning Thermostat. A few days later, Nest was acquired by Google for $3.2 Billion dollars. It was random timing rather than inside knowledge. I spent an hour yesterday replacing the thermostat in my home with a new "Learning" thermostat. I was fascinated at the usability that went into the design and user experience of Nest.  I had ordered it online from Amazon.  There was a sealed sticker that told me to do the pre-install checkout, before opening the sticker, in case I had to return it.  So, here is what I did, as per instructions: * Went to the Nest website and called up very visual and performance support graphics.* I opened up the old thermostat and indicated which color wires it was using.* It suggested I take a picture of the wires and thermostat and send by email to Nest for guidance.* In less than 30 minutes, it verified that I could simply make the switch and installation.* I mounted the new Nest with 2 screws, pushed the 2 wires into marked slots and it went LIVE.* It asked for my Wi-Fi connection, zip code and a few other items.* And, it WORKED!* The thermostat is now learning my heating choices and building a personalized schedule.* I can monitor temperature and change if from a smartphone or web.* And, it senses presence in the room for adjustment.* A great approach for installation and usability. Some might be worried about how Google will "invade" the home automation market and use our big data.  I am more on the curious side and a learner about the learning thermostat.  Every month, I will receive an email with detailed use information.  And, soon our local energy companies will provide advantaged pricing for folks with this type of thermostat. It was a cool learning hour for me, from unwrapping the product to having a fully active new thermostat.  Information is available at http://www.nest.com 3. MoviePass Experiment.2. Badges from Corporate MOOCS?3. Pete Seeger Farewell! 1. 12 Movies in 1 Month? MoviePass Experiment. Yesterday was the 12th time I went to a movie theater in January! Why? I’m experimenting with a new and fascinating service called MoviePass. In a nutshell, it is the equivalent of Hulu or Netflix - but with movies that are in the theater. I pay about $30 a month and I can see one movie, free of charge at almost any theater, anywhere in the US. I have to be in the lobby of the theater, use my smartphone to select the movie, and then go to the window or a kiosk and my MoviePass card acts like a Discover Credit Card, buying me a ticket free of charge. Interestingly, the theater owner gets the full price from MoviePass. There are a few restrictions, such as no 3D films and a firm waiting period of 24 hours before my app is live again. But, it really works and I have used it in several cities. Now, you have to be a movie geek and love to watch big screens. But, I have gone in the evening, on weekends and once left work at 2 pm for an afternoon flick. If you want to try it, go to www.moviepass.com and check it out. But, remember popcorn is full price! 2. Badges from Corporate MOOCS? Will corporate learners someday earn "Badges" as a result of taking a MOOC (Massive, Open, Online Course) and demonstrating competency or readiness? Check out our new blog: LearningMOOCs - http://www.learningmoocs.com/index.php/blog/item/badges-from-moocs 3. Peter Seeger Farewell. Yesterday, one of the wonderful and powerful folk singers and social change advocates of our time, Pete Seeger, passed away. I met him several time in my life, including on an overnight stay on his "Save the Hudson River" boat, the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. His songs "Turn Turn Turn" and "If I Had a Hammer" became a part of both folk music and social change history.  On a personal note, I remember sitting on the deck of the Clearwater while he played his banjo on his lap as he told stories about why a river should be clean enough to eat the fish safely. He blended storytelling, listening, music and passion for change in a way that moved people, history and me.  Farewell, Pete Seeger - You Made a Difference!
