Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - May 2, 2013.#769 - Updates on Learning, Business & Technology.55,959 Readers - www.masie.com - twitter: emasie - The MASIE Center.Host: Learning Leadership Academy - May in Saratoga Springs, NY. 1. Help! Defend Learning Field from Patent Suit!2. Google Glass and Learning LAB Experiments.3. Wow - 17 Tony Nominations on Broadway. 1. Help! Defend Learning Field from Patent Suit! The learning "patent trolls" are at it again. There is a company called IPLearn that has unfortunately successfully sued over a dozen learning management systems, claiming they have invented many of the core elements of technology delivered learning. Sure, they wrote several clever patents that claim to have created much of the field and, with an understaffed patent office it was approve although there were many prior learning and technology implementations. And, their strategy, which has worked, is to sue a company, get the discovery and legal costs up and up, and finally settle for a fee and stock shares: all without having invented, produced or created anything other than a few patent apps. I have worked, without fee, against their efforts several times and now they are at it again. They have brought suits against several major LMS companies and I am asking Learning TRENDS readers to help gather any manuals, documents or other experiences you have had with these earlier corporate learning systems: - Registrar," by Silton-Bookman Systems.- Learning Organization Information System (LOIS)," by KnowledgeSoft, Inc.- Etude," by Gerald Hollingsworth and GPU, Inc.- Continuous Learning System (CLS)," by AT&T Global Information Solutions International, Inc. The lawyers defending against the IPLearn suit would love to see any samples of anything that describes the operation or public availability of these systems. For example: user manuals, help files, demonstration videos, brochures, press releases, and actual program disks/CDs.  If you can help, would you send a note to my office at emasie@masie.com and we will contact you back.  Many thanks! 2. Google Glass and Learning LAB Experiments: We are starting to organize a Learning LAB at The MASIE Center that will look at how the upcoming Google Glass http://www.google.com/glass/ might have affordances for Workplace Learning. What if a learner wearing Google Glass had visual and eye movement controls over content and assistance? Hmmm! If you or your organization is interested in exploring Google Glass "Learning Apps", please send a note to bob@masie.com We will contact you about some of the options for early experiments and collaboration on this project. 3. Wow - 17 Tony Nominations on Broadway! It was a great day for MASIE Productions on Monday. The nominations for the upcoming TONY Awards were announced and two of the plays that we are investors/producers in were nominated: * 13 Awards for Kinky Boots!* 4 Awards for Trip to Bountiful! And, though it was not nominated, one of the best plays on Broadway is our Macbeth, a one-man show starring Alan Cumming. We are celebrating! Best known for playing Sulu on the original "Star Trek" TV series and six movies that followed, George Takei is unlikely social media royalty. Unofficially dubbed the King of Facebook, he counts 4 million fans in his online empire — including "Trekkies," Howard Stern listeners, and the LGBTQ community — who devour his quirky mix of kitten jokes, "Star Trek" references, heartfelt messages, and sci-fi/fantasy memes. His current projects include the musical "Allegiance", drawn from his experience of growing up in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II, and the recently published "Oh Myyy! There Goes the Internet". George Takei will be focusing on the ways in which storytelling has evolved with the growth of Social Media. Jane Pauley - "Boomers in the Workplace" - Keynoter at Learning 2013! We are honored to announce that Jane Pauley will be one of our Keynoters at Learning 2013 (Nov 3 to 6 - Orlando).  Jane will be addressing the intriguing aspects of "Boomers in the Workplace". A respected broadcast journalist for over 30 years, Jane Pauley’s career has spanned morning, primetime and daytime television making her one of the most recognizable personalities in America. Pauley’s network television career began as co-host of NBC’s Today Show, she was founding co-anchor of Dateline NBC, and host of The Jane Pauley Show. Partnering with AARP, Ms. Pauley is currently contributing to NBC’s Today Show in a series, "Your Life Calling," which features people who have reinvented the way they work or live. Take advantage of early registration discounts at http://www.learning2013.com 2. Variations on Presentations: From time to time, I like to detail the background of how I construct, design and deliver various presentations. Over the past week, I have had the privilege of presenting several keynotes on Learning Directions, with very different styles to very different audiences. Here is a micro view of the design models I used: * Last Monday, I presented a 150-minute presentation (quite long) in an Atlantic City Casino Theater (very unique) to the annual UAW/General Motors Joint Learning Conference (an unusual and intriguing coalition). There were about 400 people in the theater and a traditional keynote of any length might have put them to sleep. So, I designed a model that had the attendees standing up several times, brainstorming with others in the audience on a hot topic (e.g. how to motivate a 30-year veteran to want to learn new skills). I moved away from the fancy stage several times and talked in the audience.  And, I used the lunch break in the middle of the speech to engage the audience in questions and topics for the afternoon session.  * Last Tuesday, I facilitated a 2-hour dialogue with Learning Leaders at Farmers Insurance - done via video webinar from my hotel room in Washington, DC to their headquarters in California. The model we used was a highly interactive interview with the group posing a series of drill-down questions on key Learning Directions and Trends issues. Throughout the session, I kept presenting questions back to the group - assembled in table groups - to apply these trends to their plans for the next six years. Their leader, Ilene Haber, played a key role in providing the glue between the video Elliott and the face-to-face group. * Last Thursday, I flew to Motorola in Chicago to present a Learning Directions keynote to dozens of their learning leaders - live in Chicago and located around the world via video. The group had done its pre-selection of key topics by voting and rank ordering the content. Then, each of its top six questions became 15-minute segments for my presentation, including 10 minutes of content from Elliott and five minutes of questions from the present and remote participants. Their desire was to make each 15-minute segment a video clip that could be circulated to a much larger group at Motorola. After the 6 segments, we took a break and then did 4 more segments on follow-up topics that arose from the dialogues in the morning. And, in 2 hours I will be opening the Oracle Learning Consortium event live by video and later tonight flying to Intel in Portland for a blended media presentation on learning strategies and collaboration. In each of these formats, the design segments were quite different, aimed at maximizing the engagement of the participants and also allowing for the active re-use of the content. The days of the traditional 60-minute keynote are gone from my portfolio. Instead, conversations about presentations are as much focused on the design elements - how to leverage the right technology - and compressing or varying content length fairly dramatically. It makes the prep and delivery process more complicated but way, way, way more fun! 3. Wow! 7 TONY Awards - A Night to Remember: Sunday night was one of my most powerful and memorable experiences! We attended the TONY Awards in New York City where two of MASIE Productions musicals and plays received TONY Awards. Kinky Boots got 6 awards, including Best Musical and Cindy Lauper for the score. Cicely Tyson, the star of Trip to Bountiful, received Best Actress in a Play award at the age of 88. It was an honor to watch, root and cheer. Most impressive was the sense of community amongst the theater world as it celebrated the power of art, entertainment and message. I have been asked why I’m involved with theater, in addition to the world of learning. Both of these fields are about creating and delivering stories, content and engagement that changes behavior and achieves impact. And, both worlds have success, failure, feedback and design. If you are coming to New York, check out Kinky Boots, Trip to Bountiful and, for the next few weeks, Alan Cumming doing a 1-man version of Macbeth. http://www.masieproductions.com Yours in learning, Elliott MasieHost, Learning 2013 email: emasie@masie.comtwitter: @emasie MASIE Center Seminars, Events and Services:* Learning 2013 - November 2013 - Orlando, Florida.* Membership in The Learning CONSORTIUMInfo and Registration: http://www.masie.com - twitter: emasie

A major conversation has kicked up in the elementary and secondary school world about the impact that search engines like Google and Bing have on educational design and even needed competencies. If our learners can look something up, how does that change our design model? "Monsters University" - Behind the Scenes Learnings: There is a new movie, aimed at kids and adults, hitting the screens this week - "Monsters University". I had fun watching it the other night, seeing a rich mixture of animation, sound, visuals, stories, voices and special effects.  So, what was the "behind-the-scenes" story about the creation of Monsters U, put together by Pixar, Disney and Skywalker Ranch?"Down in the production office, we have this very unique thing," said Ricky Nierva, the "Monsters University" production designer. "We have these scare canisters for every department, and there’s a light bulb, and as they get closer to 100 (percent finished), they turn a light bulb and the lights turn on. So if you’re 90 percent done, there’s one light bulb left, and then you know when they have that light bulb turning ceremony, and they turn that last one, you’re done. A hundred percent." Read more about how Pixar put the final touches together for Monsters U at http://tinyurl.com/qxxg3b8   I’m actually considering getting a set of lights for learning projects here at The MASIE Center.2. Pictures with Notes Increases Use and Circulation. 1. 30 Under 30 Learning Colleagues - Future Leaders! Who will be the next generation of Learning Leaders?  We are pleased to announce the 30 Under 30 Program for Learning 2013 - to support, promote, mentor and expose the next generation of learning leaders and innovators.  Ninety young alumni from the previous 3 years have included rising leaders from organizations like NBCUniversal, LinkedIn, Southwest Airlines, Google, Genentech, Accenture, Farmers Insurance, IBM, Volkswagen, General Mills, Fidelity Investments, Wyndham Hotel Group, the National Weather Service and PwC.  Participants will experience a special program at Learning 2013, including keynote speakers such as Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton, Actor George Takei, Journalist Jane Pauley and Open University of UK’s Martin Bean. The program selects 30 learning leaders who will receive a deep discount, mentoring sessions, time with keynoters and CLOs, and an opportunity to facilitate sessions at Learning 2013 - expressing their views on the changing world of learning.  Complete details and online application at: http://www.learning2013.com/details/30under30.html 2. Pictures with Notes Increases Use and Circulation. There has been an intriguing shift in the world of note writing, which is the rising role of pictures.  As people post notes on social media sites like Facebook, more and more notes include a picture - often taken recently on a mobile phone. In fact, over 70 percent of recent postings included a picture.  And, the rate of note reading, on both social media and websites, goes up significantly when a picture is included.  We are seeing this trend even with corporate notes and emails.  One of my colleagues is CEO of a company and always includes a picture in notes that she circulates, adding a visual dimension. We are also tracking increased circulation rates of notes that have pictures. It would be interesting to track the policy towards and use levels of pictures with notes in your organization. TIRED LMS? Oh No!2. Internships: Wage and Legal Issues! 1. TIRED LMS? Oh No!: As I talk with CLOs and learning colleagues around the world, a phrase has started to pop up: "Our LMS feels TIRED!" Many LMS installations are getting older, but more importantly, are not able to keep up with the evolving nature of learning content and learning choices.  For example: * Tweak Me Like an Amazon Ad!:  Few Learning Systems can send highly personalized "ads" to learners - just like Amazon does - letting them know about a short video or PDF they may want to access based on their own learning history, preference or needs.* Video, Video and Video Content:  Many organizations are seeing a 1,000% percent increase in the use of short, often user-created Video Segments, for learning and performance.  Few LMS systems can go deep and track usage, departure points and user comments. The TIRED LMS may not be fully ready to handle more mobile devices, higher degrees of personalization and more learner preference and control.  I just finished my blog on "TIRED LMS! Oh No!" Catch it at http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/tired-lms-oh-no.html  2. Internships: Wage and Legal Issues! I’m a lifelong fan of internships.  I was an intern for many organizations while in college and have had over 50 interns over the years at The MASIE Center.  Some get academic credit, some are paid, some are volunteers and most get intense experiences and mentorship.  We try to pay our interns where appropriate and avoid the "get me coffee" internship with low learning or content aspects. There is a high energy conversation and set of conflicts brewing around unpaid internships.  Some would argue that all interns should earn the going wage for a new employee.  Others argue that the students should receive some of the tuition for credits they pay the college.  And, others would like to alter the nature of internships.  Some, like me, would like to see them expanded to "Apprenticeships" that would allow someone doing a mid-career shift to work for experience and mentoring - in a fair exchange. Watch for a deep debate on the future of paid vs. unpaid internships and the roles of employers and colleges.  Here is an article from a college newspaper:  http://www.elonpendulum.com/2013/07/unpaid-internship-experiences-under-national-scrutiny/ We would love to hear from Learning TRENDS readers about their views on internships.  Send a note to emasie@masie.com Yours in learning, Elliott MasieHost, Learning 2013 email: emasie@masie.comtwitter: @emasie MASIE Center Seminars, Events and Services:* Learning 2013 - November 2013 - Orlando, Florida.* Membership in The Learning CONSORTIUMInfo and Registration: http://www.masie.com - twitter: emasie

The conversations soared as each person talked about: * A job that they had that was a major mistake or failure.* A business they started that lost a fortune and went belly-up.* A competency they thought they had - only to find out it was not their sweet spot.* A project plan that was totally off and had to be scrapped or redone from scratch. The students were fascinated with hearing about Failure from people who have been quite successful in business. The whole room lit up as we openly discussed failure and the positive role it plays. I love to talk about "Failing My Way to Success". Sometimes, we just get it wrong. And, we need to have the tools, trust and community to process failure into a personal or organizational "learnable" moment. Failure is a key element in learning. We want to create learning processes that often allow or even encourage learners to fail their way to success - learning from the mistakes and shifting their skills or readiness appropriately. And as learning producers and designers, we need to see the developmental power of failure! We are pleased to announce that we will honor Susan Peters, GE’s Vice President of HR and the former CLO, with the Learning 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award. Susan and her teams at GE are actively involved in transforming learning and leadership for their 320,000 employees around the globe. Recently, Susan led an update of their Crotonville campus, focusing on new mixes of learning and development for the leaders in GE. Susan will be featured at Learning 2013, where I will interview her on the learning and development shifts that GE has been creating. We will also have a live video feed from Crotonville where there are many fascinating new features and facilities, including a leadership "barn" that hosts interactive sessions and has an executive kitchen where the rising leaders cook together as part of their program. Dennis Dammerman - Award Winner Passes: One of the great leaders in the world of business and human resources died on Tuesday.  Dennis Dammerman, who was the CFO and Vice Chair of General Electric, passed away after a brilliant career in business and community service.  Dennis received our Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 - honoring his amazing support for learning, development and talent at GE.  Dennis was also a colleague and friend of mine, serving with me on the Skidmore College Board of Trustees. When he received his award from us, I asked Dennis what he thought about the term ROI, as used in Learning.  He smiled and said in his very direct and crisp way, "I don’t expect ROI from you learning folks. If I wanted a return in dollars, I would give to other groups. What I want from learning, is a return of Talent, Human Capital and Readiness to Perform and Grow."  Ironically, I was hosting a group of 40 rising executives from GE at our center yesterday and we were talking about Dennis, as an example of great leadership and concern for the growth of talent. I ended the meeting at 5 pm, walked upstairs to my office and got a note that Dennis had passed away. I returned to tell the visiting executives about the sad news. Dennis, you made a difference in the world of learning! Memory in the Age of Google: How do our learners approach "memorizing" differently when the content is also online?  When do we (and our learners) memorize at deep memory, at light memory, at recall, and when do we just want to know how to get to the knowledge - online at the moment of need. I am delighted that one of my favorite researchers in this area, Betsy Sparrow from Columbia University, will be a keynote speaker on the opening night of Learning 2013 - exploring "Knowledge in the Age of Google." We will explore these key issues interactively with Betsy: * How do we "talk about" different types of memory?  When is something in deep, instant recall?  When is it refreshable?* How are learners "sorting" knowledge when it is also online externally or on a Corporate Intranet?* If a learner can "look it up", are they less likely to memorize it? First Days of Google Glass Experiments: For the past four days, I have been walking around New York City, Washington and Saratoga Springs wearing my new pair of Google Glass. The MASIE Center is experimenting with Google Glass to look for possible "affordances" that might surface for the learning, development and workplace performance world. I am also curious how it might apply to my Broadway investments as well. Here are some early observations: * Fascinated to be able to watch and record video through Google Glass.* Many people freaked out and walking away from possible recording.* Calling up a Google Question and Site has been powerful - even adding walking directions.* Wish it worked with my 3G - when out of range of wireless.* The NY Times and Elle Magazine Apps are intriguing views of how content might appear.* Watch for "Driving while Glassing" stories soon.* Imagine how a learner might use it to drill down for more content.* What if a Mandarin speaker could watch Kinky Boots and get subtitles in Google Glass.* Weight Watchers will have a food recognition and in your ear whisper app soon.* Like all new tech, the apps and affordances follow. We will have a video of our experiments later this week for TRENDS readers - and a Google Glass Learning LAB at Learning 2013. Stu Crabb, Facebook Director of Learning, along with Mike Rognlien, "Builder of Awesome Managers", will detail their shift in learning at a keynote at Learning 2013. "By ruthlessly prioritizing, saying NO to the ‘traditional’ demands of "training department" and really enabling people to own and drive their own development, Facebook’s L&D team is transforming what has traditionally been a curriculum-based approach to learning into one that is dynamic, current, and ‘One-Size-Fits-One’." We will interview Stu and Mike, as well as have them lead an interactive session with Learning 2013 participants, detailing how they are shifting the learning culture at Facebook. Details at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/facebook.html 2. Adventure Based Learning - Re-branding: I just finished a short video on "Adventures & Learning".  What if we packaged some of our courses, programs and "experiences" as adventures? I was impressed by a recent book on 1/2 day to 2 day Travel Adventures that one might do as a skill building activity - and wondered what it would be like if we applied that to our Learning Programs. Imagine if you offered a "Walk in the Shoes of the Customer at a Store" adventure. It is a fun concept, and I am wearing my new "adventure vest" in the video: Adventures in Learning Video.http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/adventures.html 3. Find Me a Cool Bag, Please! I am bored with those black bags that we all get at conferences and seminars, which many of us leave in our hotel rooms.  So, I asked my design team to come up with a very different, fun and high energy bag that reflected zip, brightness and would be brought home by participants - even to give to their kids. A NASCAR Pit Crew will be set up outside the hotel at Learning 2013. Participants will be suited up in safety jumpers and trained in how to work as a team of 8 on changing the tires of a NASCAR vehicle - safely and quickly. Some teams will get the tires changed in under a minute. Power wrenches, car lifts and new tires will be part of the skills participants will learn.  And, our Pit Crew coaches will video tape each attempt, providing collaboration and technical skill feedback. We will have prizes for the best corporate teams and random teams. And, our 30 Under 30 Team Members will compete against our Learning Veterans. Why? Learning and collaboration with a physical and competitive task is a great way to step into skilling in a new way. At a NASCAR Race, the final margin may be less than 12 seconds between the first two cars. So, time for pit crew change is critical and deeply depends on team cooperation. Collaborator, Masie Horse, Races Today: While on the topic of racing, today is an exciting day for me. Collaborator, one of the MASIE Center thoroughbred horses, is racing in historic Saratoga Springs in the 4th race. He is a 3 year old horse and his is a special race for "maidens" who have never won. He will go 1 mile on the grass, competing with 11 other great thoroughbreds.  Am I nervous and excited, yes! My goals: may it be a healthy race for him and may his performance improve. Wish him well. You can send a note to emasie@masie.com and I will pass on your wishes in the paddock area before the race. Pictures of him and the racetrack are at: http://www.masie.com/collaborator-8-12-13.html 3. Chromecast from Google Opens Up Classroom Graphics: One of the technologies we are playing with at our Learning LAB is a small device that plugs into a TV’s HDMI port, allowing anyone with a mobile device to display video or other content with permissions. We are configuring some classrooms here at The MASIE Center with Chromecast to mock up how learners in a session could easily share personalized content with the entire group. The price is right at $35 and it appears to give real "affordances" to teachers, trainers, designers and learners - in both classrooms and meetings. Big Learning Data Concerns?2. NBCUniversal’s Talent Lab: ReBranding Learning!3. Yes, Collaborator Won - Picture in Action. 1. Big Learning Data Concerns? We are in the final days of writing a new book, Big Learning Data, in cooperation with ASTD. I need your help! As more and more data is available and "mined" on employee’s learning and other activities, what concerns might they have? What might be a "Big Learning Data" Code of Conduct that an organization might create? For example, if an employee takes a Myers Briggs survey, how is that data used now - or in 5 years?  What degree of transparency is stated or assumed about the use of Big Learning Data? I would love your comments and thoughts as I write the final and important chapter of the new "Big Learning Data" book. Please send a confidential note to emasie@masie.com  2. NBCUniversal’s Talent Lab: ReBranding Learning! We believe that it is time for our field to approach "ReBranding Learning".  As fewer people take traditional courses, as more content is driven by user choice and as career patterns shift, organizations have to be ready to take a fresh look at the "Brand" of Learning. We are honored to be featuring Jayzen Patria, Executive Director of Talent Development and NBCUniversal’s Talent Lab, to lead an event-wide discussion about "ReBranding Learning" at Learning 2013. We will ask every participant and organization to take a creative and strategic look at their brand - from titles to assumptions to even graphical representation of learning. Jayzen is leading the efforts at NBCUniversal in this arena with their new Talent Lab. More details at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/nbcuniversal.html 3. Yes, Collaborator Won - Picture in Action: Yesterday, I shared my excitement about a big race for our horse, Collaborator. Well, he won! It was so exciting to see the results of months of training, care and coaching result in a historic win at Saratoga Springs Racetrack - as he led the field of 10 horses from the gate to the finish line over a mile. Collaborator was also Competitive. And his winning picture is at: http://www.masie.com/collaborator-8-12-13.html Hundreds of TRENDS readers sent him good wishes yesterday by email. He thanks you and is taking a day of rest and relaxation before getting ready for his next race in a few weeks.  Note: The MASIE Center will be closed on Wednesday, August 14th. Time Slips in Seminars - Graphical MIX Models!2. Search History: Interesting "Big" Data. 1. Time Slips in Seminars - Graphical MIX Models! How many times have you been in a seminar or breakout at a conference and the instructor tells you, "there will lots of time at the end for questions - so hold them until then." Time slips away and, at the end, there are still 3 slides to cover and no time for questions or participation. It happens at every event and as a producer, I wanted to experiment with some new models of Time and Activity MIX. So, our Design Team put together "Learning MIX" graphic pie charts for each model of a breakout.  Learner Interaction is in one color. Trainer or Facilitator presenting is in another color. And, other activities are also represented graphically. A quick glance shows what percentage of time in the 60 minutes will be allocated to each type of activity. Learners can personalize their experience by gravitating to the "MIX" that matches their need or style on that topic.  Some might want to really get deep Step-by-Step walk-throughs and others might want a wide-ranging participant conversation. Check out these graphical Learning "MIX" graphics at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/learning-mix-graphics.html We are using these graphics as a core part of our design process with each facilitator - who can be highly creative in activities - within the mix promised to learners.  And, we will post them in each breakout room at Learning 2013 as a shared "contract" for time allocation.  2. Search History - Interesting "Big" Data: As I work on our new "Big Learning Data" book with ASTD, the topic of Search History comes up. For me, one of the most interesting items to consider and analyze is my own search history - from both mobile devices and office machines. Over a day or over a year, my Search History is an interesting barometer of: * Areas of My Curiosity.* Knowledge Zones Emerging.* People I Have Met or Heard About.* Topics Difficult to Search Easily For.* Repetitive Inquiries.* Items I Choose Never to Memorize.* Changing Content or Numeric. I believe that we will see more tools for both the individual and perhaps also for the organization to use to analyze and interpret one’s search history.  This will raise interesting transparency "Big Learning Data" questions.  One colleague only searches using his personal mobile phone - rather than have his search items trackable at work. On a personal note, I often chat with passengers next to me on airplanes about their own Search History patterns.  Without asking to see their history, we get into an intriguing conversation about how they approach knowledge access. Note: We now have over 615 colleagues registered for Learning 2013!  And, there are over 20 corporations that are sending groups to Learning 2013 as a team learning experience. Jane Pauley on Boomers in the Workplace: Video. 3. Wearable Performance Support - Let’s Talk More! 1. eLearning and Instructional Designer Titles "Evaporating":  I regularly scan and analyze the various databases of learning, training and performance colleagues. Recently, while looking at titles, I noticed two phrases that are decreasing in presence: * "e-Learning"* "Instructional Designer" I was surprised by the size of the shift, but not by the vector. Let’s take a look at each trend shift: eLearning: Fewer corporate workplaces are using the phrase eLearning actively. Many are just calling the full range of opportunities "learning".  Others are moving towards greater definition of the process, e.g. Virtual Classrooms, Webinars, eBooks, MOOCs or Online Courses.  We are using Learning for all of our programs rather than adding the "e". Ironically, I am credited, or cursed, with helping to introduce and popularize eLearning in the mid 1990’s. But, times change! Instructional Designer: There are many fewer instructional designers as full time employees at major corporations.  Some of this has shifted to suppliers and vendors. And, some of the content is being curated, organized and published by people who are defined as content focused but not trained or tasked as "instructional designers".  Some organizations want to produce learning and performance content but not in a traditional instructional envelope. I have been using Learning Producer as an alternative title, which focuses on a wider range of content elements, including video, mobile and social/collaborative.  And, we hope that colleges and universities bring their language to a closer alignment with the greater job and career opportunities for colleagues that have design and analysis skills. 2. Jane Pauley on Boomers in the Workplace - New Video: Jane Pauley will be a keynote speaker at Learning 2013, focusing on changing roles and careers of Boomers. We (since I am a full-fledged Boomer) are working longer, shifting careers more often, creating "encore" chapters and often returning to organizations in new roles and contracts. Learning programs for Boomers are also changing.  Here is a great video that NBC Today did of Jane Pauley talking about the challenges of Boomers: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/pauley.html 3. Wearable Performance Support - Let’s Talk More! After 15 days with my Google Glass, I am more inclined to see it as a Performance Support tool for an occupation or industry - rather than as a pure consumer product. Imagine a doctor, a lab technician, a pilot, a tour guide or stock trader being able to use Wearable Performance Support: the idea of blending real-time Learning and Knowledge at the Moment of Need. This week, we will be testing Google Glass in the MASIE Center LAB as a wearable job aid. Stay tuned. The Magic 40% Figure on Webinar No-Shows :) 2. Procter & Gamble’s Learning Honored. 1. The Magic 40% Figure on Webinar No-Shows :) There are some unspoken trends in every field. In the world of webinars, it is the 40% No-Show Predictor. Almost every organization reports that AT LEAST 40% of the people who register or reserve time for a one-hour webinar will become no-shows of the live event. This may change if it is more of a management meeting or there are real consequences for non-attendance. But, in most situations, if 100 people reserve a space, expect about 40% or more to become no-shows. Some of the reasons may be: * If the event is streamable, many choose to view/listen to that at a more convenient time.* Some love the fast forward options of a non-live version.* Stuff Happens! Daily business realities conflict with the scheduled webinar.* "I Won’t Be Missed" - many workers feel webinars are more and more optional.* "It is Too Long!" - there are many 12-minute topics that get stretched to 60 minutes. And, there may be other reasons. I’d love to hear from Learning TRENDS readers about this number in their organization. Send me a note about your own experience with the Webinar "No Show Rate" and I’ll summarize them into a non-attributable summary next week. Send it to emasie@masie.com 2. Can a learning colleague tell a rich story in 20 slides, each auto-advancing every 20 seconds? That’s called Pecha Kucha and one of the fun formats we will use at Learning 2013! I experimented with Pecha Kucha at Learning 2007 and have used it every few years as an alternative format. These can be focused on a professional effort or share a learning story from our personal lives.  It is amazing how participants can share a powerful and rich story in 6 Minutes and 40 Seconds!  So, we will be adding Learning Pecha Kucha sessions at our conference in November.  And, at the end of 400 seconds, the presentation is over and the leader sits down :) If you would like to see some suggestions and formats for leveraging Pecha Kucha - go to http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/pechakuncha-20-slides-x-20-seconds.html 2. Time to Kill? Memories and More. MASIE Productions will be one of the co-producers of a new Broadway play, "A Time to Kill", based on the book by John Grisham.  Yesterday, we went to the first rehearsal and it is now gearing up for an opening in October.  I would love to get some data from Learning TRENDS readers about their memories of either the "A Time to Kill" novel or movie.  If you can take a few minutes, share your memories with me at http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1344643/Time  We will keep you informed as the design and presentation of "A Time to Kill" comes to Broadway in just 6 weeks. 3. Work and Social Media Rules?  So, what are the rules in your organization about employees sharing information about the company in social media?  Recently, a number of organizations have added sections to the Employee Handbook and/or New Hire Orientation, addressing rules and norms about social media mentions of the organization.  Some organizations have organized guidelines to coach employees about what is appropriate, questionable or not allowable on Social Media.  For example, a sales person posts that they are on a trip to a new city on Facebook.  Might that be monitored by your competition to see if you are visiting key sales prospects?  Or, if a person gets a tough performance review, would their venting perhaps impact the recruitment efforts of new talent if viewed by prospects?  Watch for more social media guidelines and even "Big Data" feedback scoreboards to provide employees with an aggregated view of their postings.
