Start to think about what conclusions you would make based upon "Hillary" randomly choosing 5 females and 3 males. Does this graph give us enough to conclude that Hillary was fair in her selections?

While e-learning portals have been around for a while now, the last decade has witnessed continuous innovation in the e-learning portals space. More and more organizations are looking for specific solutions to address their unique business and organizational challenges through focused e-learning portals. These changing needs are in part also due to the advent of mobile devices, social media, WhatsApp, etc. that has changed the way people interact in their lives. It is but natural that they also expect similar change in the delivery of the training as it is no longer an exercise done in a silo, but one that needs to provide a similar kind of collaborative and interactive experience for it to be truly effective.
Within learning portals, personalized learning environments, competency based portals, and learner/user-centric portals have emerged as areas of interest. Portals like My Personal Learning Environment (PLE) are an exciting, integrated learning platform that enables a dynamic and customizable learning experience for the learners based on how they want to learn, irrespective of where they may be and which device they may be using. Personalized learning environment provides an ecosystem in which learners can explore the world of formal, informal and social learning and is completely aligned with 70-20-10 learning model.
Competency-based portals on the other hand are where all types of gaps and all types of remediation are at one place. The portal becomes the central place where an individual can view his gaps and an organization can simultaneously assess the cumulative competency gap, thereby aligning the training and development interventions to meet the needs of both.
A user centric portal allows the learners to consume content based on their current job requirements, aspirations, and goals. While it enables expanding the learning context from one organization to the entire industry, it presents an opportunity to develop solutions to establish their ROI. This is done through incorporating outcome driven features and functionalities thereby making analytics and reporting key aspects of the overall solution.
At Tata Interactive Systems (TIS), we have kept pace with the evolving needs of the organizations. TIS’ Portals center-of-excellence (COE) leverages its technology expertise along with the strong instructional design capabilities to provide a rich user experience and a robust information architecture. Our design methodology and processes not only provide a value add, but also validate the objectives and end outcomes at a very early stage.

We’re just back from a valuable trip to ASAE Annual 2015, our first professional associations conference. The trip took us to Detroit, where we swapped insider tips on the latest innovations in online training and elearning with an impressive range of smart and creative professionals from across the world. Brendan, Caoimhín and Phily walked executive leaders through the newly launched features built to meet the specific learning management needs of associations and professional bodies.
Here’s what we learned
Learning with associations and professional bodies
ASAE, also known as the Center for Association Leadership, is an ultra-professional organization, representing over 21,000 executives in over 9,300 bodies worldwide. We were exposed to a whole lot of industry expertise at ASAE Annual, from organizations as diverse as trade associations to voluntary organizations. Executives shared resources, ideas and networks to support progress across the association community - a lot of business cards were exchanged! Attendees were generous enough to share candid accounts of their training needs and gave us feedback on the associations features of the LearnUpon LMS. ASAE was a great place to listen - we heard executives discuss training learnings and insights from the past year and how they planned to action them in the year ahead. Like the best learning and training, ASAE was truly collaborative.
Big changes for eLearning in professional associations
Although working in many different industries, executives shared one thing in common. They were laser-focused on the value of investing in delivering quality training and continuous professional development opportunities to their members. Most professionals we spoke to described edtech as the solution to their training challenges and were excited to hear about the launch of LMS features developed specifically for associations. This wasn’t a surprise at an ASAE event in which the potential of innovation to drive growth and revenue was a constant theme.
Associations hit by a lack of support
While many ASAE attendees have big plans to invest in an LMS in the current year, about 50% had already made the leap to purchasing a learning management system. Feedback on the performance of current learning management systems was mixed. Again and again, we heard of integrations and maintenance held up by poor service and support - a complaint we’ve sadly heard repeated across the eLearning industry. We’ve worked hard to tackle the issue, with our commitment to providing 24/7 support one of the things LearnUpon customers love most about us. But the positive takeaway was that professional associations are as ambitious as ever - supporting their training programs by investing in learning technology.
Learnings from LearnUponers
Superstar Account Manager Phily says:
It was clear that education, training and development are hugely valuable to ASAE members. Everyone we spoke to said they were actively planning to either launch or develop their education and training programs. They really appreciated its value.
Caoimhin, recently voted one of the top 10 demonstrators in the world, says:
Blended learning is bigger than ever. The blended learning features offered by LearnUpon were the biggest hit with the people I spoke to. A close second was the ability to have child portals for multiple branches or smaller associations or chapters within the parent association.
Congratulations to our iPad Air winner
Brian Clark, Executive Director of KPMA, was the lucky winner of our competition to win a brand new iPad Air. Congratulations to Brian and thanks to everyone who tested their knowledge and took part.
We left our first associations conference inspired by the ambition and hunger for training innovation in professional bodies. Exhibiting at ASAE is only one small part of our commitment to making learning technology work harder for professional associations. Our final takeaway was that ASAE members are using learning management systems to drive the value they offer members, building on their CPD offering as a valuable source of non-dues revenue.
LearnUpon will also be exhibiting at the ASAE Technology Conference in December. The team are already looking forward to getting another opportunity to reconnect with some of those we met at the annual conference. It’s important to us to get out and learn about our customers’ industries and keep our fingers on the pulse on what they need next.

Sometimes we get a group of students that just do a fantastic job on a project. They go above and beyond our expectations, and remind us how great it is to be a teacher. Scott Cloutier, PhD taught an online course on the Biology of Happiness this summer, and just had to share the final project from his students. His assignment was open-ended, and allowed students the freedom to create something meaningful and creative. Below is his blog post."Have you ever wondered why we feel the way we do in the spaces we occupy? How about connections between relationships and our happiness? We live in an overwhelming world of endless choices and options, yet, we are driven by biological factors to survive and reproduce. I recently asked my online students to develop interventions to help people realize the connections between their own happiness and some of these biological factors. You can see my assignment guidelines by clicking here. I want to share one website in particular - an excellent effort surrounding the topic and concepts of the course. Perhaps it can help someone you know!"To see McKenna, Farah and Christian's project, Click on the link below:FindingYOUPhoria: https://findingyouphoria.wordpress.comTake a minute to make comments or share your favorite assignment in the comment section below!

Sections of the application include:
Training Program/Scope
Training Budget
Tuition Reimbursement
Training Infrastructure and Delivery
Evaluation/Metrics
Human Resources
The deadline for applications is September 21, 2015. All applications are judged quantitatively by an outside research company and qualitatively by Training’s editor-in-chief and the Top 10 Hall of Famers (organizations that appeared in the Top 10 of the Training Top 125 for four consecutive years). Scoring is explained on the opening of the application.
Winners who submit applications in September 2015 will be notified in mid-November, and the awards ceremony will be held at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, Orlando, FL, on February 15, 2016.

1. Susan Cain on Quiet and Introverts in Workplace.2. Cursive Skills Feedback Galore.3. Producer Shivers: Allegiance Begins
1. Susan Cain on Quiet and Introverts in Workplace: We are honored to feature Susan Cain, author of "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking" for a live, interactive video interview with the participants of Learning 2015 at our closing General Session on November 4th. Susan’s work on the reality and myths of introversion and the impacts in the workplace are so important. As we move into an ever more social and collaborative culture of the workplace, how do we honor and engage all of our workers - respecting their styles? Details at: http://www.learning2015.com/index.php/item/susan-cain.html
2. Cursive Skills Feedback Galore: When I asked TRENDS readers to take a few minutes and write 3 lines in "cursive/script" I got what I was asking for. Almost 1,000 responses from learning colleagues around the world have come in and it was intriguing to read and reflect on those comments.
Almost 90% of folks reported that their cursive writing skills are mildly to significantly lowered. About 10% still have strong cursive skills. Most of them had regular habits to keep cursive alive in their skill box, including taking notes in cursive or writing greeting notes on a frequent basis.
A large number of responders talked about their own personalized Blended Cursive. They mix Cursive with Print, Cursive with Upper Case, and even mix Cursive with LOL/OMG internet terms.
Several reported that their children not only don’t have any cursive writing skills, they’re not able to read notes in cursive from their grandparents.
Clearly, our skills will flow with the shifts in the cultural utilization and technology adaptions.
3. Producer Shivers - Allegiance Begins: Yesterday was a very emotional day for MASIE Productions. We are producers of a new Broadway show called Allegiance, which will start previews in just about 6 weeks.
It is a show about the time in U.S. History, during World War II, where American citizens of Japanese descent, who lived on the West Coast, were put into detention centers for many years. The beautiful music is focused on the personal story of our star, George Takei (of Star Trek fame).
Yesterday was the first day of "school" for Allegiance. The cast, crew and key producers gathered in a rehearsal studio on 42nd Street in Manhattan and launched this last stage of development. It was so powerful to hear the words of the lead producer, the director and George Takei as they framed the emotional and historical relevance of this work.
Tears flowed from all of our eyes as we realized the power of telling a story that has been told very rarely - and to see the implications for everyone. George Takei recounted his own experience as a young boy being relocated to one of the "camps".
Producers, whether we work in corporate learning or on Broadway, are always striving to make deep connections with content, context, powerful stories and individual response. Producing is enabling powerful moments of learning and impact for people in ways that move them! It creates shivers as stories and lessons come together in these powerful ways.
Yours in learning,
Elliott MasieHost, Learning 2015

A while ago, my friend Peter Kaminski wrote something that was so terrific, I said "May I blog that?" He said yes. So it is about time I share this (emphasis mine):I just wrote elsewhere: "The trick with wikis is to think of them as a substrate for community, and to work on the community, not the wiki. A wiki is like a table in a meeting room. It doesn’t create the meeting, or the discussion, but does enable it and create a place to spread out, organize, and retrieve information. The other thing is that most people aren’t good at using wikis; you need 5-10% of the participants to be "wiki gardeners," specifically tasked (and constitutionally able) to keep the table somewhere in the middle between sterile and a terrible mess."And, "Remember not to fetishize the tools; rather, use them as part of enabling people to work better together."There is so much goodness packed into those words. I might add "remember, not to fetishize community!" And a great reminder as we gear up the online part of the UDGAgora project and Project Community. (I’m going to share this post over at our Project Community faculty blog as well!)Thanks, Pete!

I hear it all the time…how do we sustain the learning? How do we get our participants to apply what they’ve learned back on the job? How do we transfer the learning from the classroom to the real world? Let’s face it, if they don’t use it, they’ll lose it! When you think about how much money it costs to train people, we better see some type of improvement back on the job.
We also know how important it is to have management support and buy-in for training. We need managers to follow up and sustain the learning. If they’re not involved, how can they reinforce, guide, or encourage the use of new skills? But have you ever thought about what YOU can do to promote the transfer of training? It may require more effort but don’t we owe it to our learners?
So, here are Langevin’s top five tips to make training stick:
At the end of the session, have a discussion about obstacles that could impede progress in applying the new skills. Brainstorm and discuss ways of overcoming the obstacles.
Give learners an on-the-job assignment to complete after training.
Send brief quizzes out after the course to refresh learners on course content.
A few weeks or months after the course, phone or send a memo to participants to find out what they have done regarding the course content. Collect the responses and send them out as a mini report to everyone who attended.
Arrange a follow-up course a month or two after the original course. The purpose is to assess progress, discuss problems and find ways of solving those problems. Learners and their supervisors should attend this course together.
Here’s another technique that I have found to be extremely motivating for learners. At the end of class, have each learner complete a document called a "Contract with Myself."
The first sentence begins, "The most important or significant ideas that I’ve learned, thought, or heard while at this workshop are …"
The second sentence is, "As a result of these ideas, I intend to do the following things within the next 30 days …"
The final sentence is, "By doing these things, I will achieve the following results …"
I collect the contracts and tell the learners that I will mail them in approximately 30 days. Experts say it’s very powerful to see a goal statement written in your own handwriting. I’ve asked learners to give me feedback when they receive the contract. I’m pleased to say that all the feedback has been very positive. Even if they hadn’t accomplished all the items listed, it was still motivating and a good reminder when they received the contract in the mail.
Have you used any of these methods and how have they worked? What else are you doing to reinforce the training? I hope that I have motivated you to do MORE for your learners to make training stick!

The functionality and design of the menu on a website is crucial. It’s where users manage their process of navigating your website, and it’s what helps them find the content they’re looking for and accomplish the tasks they want to, and ultimately fulfill the reason they came to your website.
CSS3 has made menu design so much easier, and helped tackle situations that would otherwise be challenging, such as rotating menus, animated menus and mega menus.
Thanks to charitable developers, there are tons of quality menus to use as examples or as drop-in code for your website, and here’s some of my favorite:
3D Cube Rotating Menu
Horizontal Drop Down Menu
