Stealing Pumpkins From the Pumpkin Patch from Mr. Kirsch on Vimeo. Stealing from the Pumpkin Patch Purpose of Activity: Students will practice dodging, chasing, and fleeing skills in a dynamic setting. Prerequisites: Students should understand the strategy for dodging, chasing and fleeing and how to perform those skills safely in general space. They need to know how to use flag belts properly. Suggested Grade Level: 3-5 Materials Needed: 8 hula hoops, 8 gator skin balls (preferably orange in color), cones to mark off the field, flag belts for each student. Strobe Light. Description of Idea This activity is a lot like Capture the Flag and is best suited for a large gym or outside, but it can be played with smaller classes in a small gym. Set up: Split the playing area in half and split the class into two teams, assigning one team to each side. Set up four hula hoops at the back of each side with each hoop containing a gator skin ball (pumpkin). Make another line across the playing area about 10-15 feet in front of the hoops to designate the safety zone. Directions: Players must try to steal a pumpkin from the other side’s patch without getting their flag pulled. Players cannot get their flag pulled if they are on their side of the center line or in the other teams "safety area." If a player steals a pumpkin without losing a flag, that player will place the pumpkin in one of its team’s hoops. If a player’s flag is pulled off on the other side, they must return to their side and perform 10 Jack-O-Lantern Jumping Jacks and try again. The goal of each team is to obtain all 8 pumpkins and place them in their team’s pumpkin patch. Variations: Adjust this activity to accommodate larger classes by setting up two fields with the necessary equipment. Assessment Ideas: Assessment of the student’s ability to dodge, chase, and flee can be done by observation. Adaptations for Students with Disabilities: Students with mobility problems can be assigned to play defense and pull flags. Students in wheelchairs can be pushed by other players and carry the pumpkin. PE Central’s lesson plans for physical education. Scooter Scramble from Mr. Kirsch on Vimeo. Scooter Scramble Purpose of Activity: To demonstrate scooter safety and cooperative skills using group challenges. Suggested Grade Level: K-2 Materials Needed: One scooter per student, four different colored jerseys, four garbage cans marked with one colored jersey, unlimited equipment (balls, beanbags, etc.) Description of Idea Remind students about the importance of scooter safety. Discuss with students the importance of working together as a group for a common goal. After explaining the challenge to the group, allow time for each team to listen, discuss, and make decisions that will help reach their goal. Divide teams into four groups. Each team member is given a scooter and randomly scattered against the gym walls. The four garbage cans and other equipment is scattered throughout the gym. The challenge is for team members to scramble using their scooter, collect equipment (only one at a time), and place the equipment in the garbage can marked with their colored jersey. Members must stay on their scooters. When no equipment is left, teams count the equipment they collected in their garbage can. Equipment is scattered again. The new challenge is to collect more equipment than previously. * This lesson makes a great instant activity when using scooters. Variations: 1. Change team members by switching jerseys. 2. Identify only certain equipment to collect (only beanbags, only balls, only red equipment, etc.) Teaching Suggestions: 1. Teacher walks around and corrects students not demonstrating scooter safety. 2. Teacher encourages cooperative skills. Resource via ==> @PECentral: Submitted by Mary Nellen who teaches at St Jude in Wauwatosa, WI.

Sink the Battle Ship from Mr. Kirsch on Vimeo. Sink The Ship Purpose of Activity: To throw balls using correct overhand technique in a dynamic setting. Activity cues: Overhand Throwing Cues, Catching Cues Prerequisites: Knowledge of the overhand throw, the ability to catch a thrown ball. Suggested Grade Level: 3-5 Materials Needed: Pins, mats, gatorskin or soft balls. Description of Idea Two teams of three play against each other across the playing area or gym. Set up the gym so you have one mat (ship) for each three students. Have the players in the game agree on how far the mats will be from each other. On the floor in front of each mat, set up four pins. Place a scooter (lifeboat) and four gator skin or soft balls (ammunition) on the mat to start. Designate someone to ride the lifeboat (scooter). The person on the scooter is the only person who can retrieve balls from the sea (gym floor) and bring them back to their mat (ship). However, the students on the mats may catch thrown balls or reach for them on the floor keeping one foot on the mat. The students on the mat are trying to knock down the pins at the other mat by throwing balls using correct overhand technique. At least one foot must be on their mat at all times. When all the pins by your mat are knocked down, set them up and restart the game with another person on both teams lifeboats. Variations: After all teams have played at least one game have them select another team to play. Source: ==> www.pecentral.com

Source: www.youtube.com See on Scoop.it - Physical Education & Fitness Volleyball (Serving Game) State Standard: 1, 3 Equipment: Volleyballs (or beach balls), Nets Grade: 5-8 Purpose of Event: Demonstrate the appropriate steps in serving a ball in Volleyball. Time: 10-15 minutes Description: Great game to practice serving, after learning the proper technique. Lots of reps and serving accuracy is accomplished in this mini-game that groups one team up against another to be the team with the best serving accuracy. A must-try as part of a volleyball unit. Players from each team stand in spot on their side of the court, opposite from a teammate who is the starting server. On the signal, the server from each team keeps trying to serve to their teammates. If a ball is caught, the player who caught it becomes a server as well, and joins the first server. First team to get all players up and serving wins the round! Concerns: Move safely in general space. This idea is from:

You tie a piece of rope to the rim on one of your basketball hoops. You then take a track baton, and tape it to a large volleyball/beach ball, then string the rope through the baton and tie to the basketball hoop on the other end of the gym. Split your class into 2 teams, and use whatever type of ball you wish (yarn balls, small gator skin balls.) The students have to throw the balls at the beach ball, trying to get to cross a line on the floor for points. Taken from a contest that firefighters have were they put a barrel on a cable and then see which group of firefighters can get the barrel to the other side. Turkey Hunt State Standard: 1, 2, 3 Equipment: Bucket of Yarn Balls (or other small balls for throwing), 3 colors of scrimmage vests, 4 folding mats, & 8 Cones Grade: 3-5 Purpose of Event: Demonstrate throwing at a moving target, dodging a throw ball while running, cardio vascular conditioning. Time: 10-15 minutes Description: Divide the class into 3 teams, I put each team in a different colored scrimmage vest (blue, red, yellow). One team stands in the center circle, they are the turkey hunters (blue), one team stands behind one of the 4 mats, they are the turkeys (yellow) and the other team (red) are the ball retrievers. Stand the folded mats on their sides around the 4 corners of the playing area adjust the size of the area as needed. I make 2 small areas on each side by the free throw line, (the turkey pen). Rules: The turkey hunters have to stay in the center circle and they try to shoot the turkeys as they run around the playing area, I have a bucket with the balls sitting in the circle, I only let them have one ball at a time. The turkeys are to run around the outside of the playing area, they can use the mats as shelter, but only for a set time (I have them count to 10 pieces of apple pie) and then they have to move. If they are shot, hit by a ball, they have to run and sit in the turkey pen (4 cones by free throw line) until a turkey comes and gives them a high five, they then lock elbows and they have free backs to a mat (free backs=can’t get out). The retrievers are to run and gather the balls, bring them back to the bucket and put them inside. I play for a minute or two and then rotate jobs. Play two or three rounds. Concerns: Move safely in general space. This idea is from: Mark Struck, PE Teacher, Laura B. Anderson Elementary School, Sioux Falls, SD.

Winter Wonderland Centers from Mr. Kirsch on Vimeo. Winter Wonderland State Standards: 1, 3, 4 Equipment: Beanbags, Bowling Pins, Buddy Walkers, Carpet Squares, Several Cones, Hockey Puck/Stick. Grade: K-3 Purpose of Event: Students will demonstrate understanding in gross and fine motor tasks using balance, strength, and coordination. Time: 20-25 minutes. Description: This is great perceptual motor center activity where students are able to pretend several winter time activities. A) Snowball Throw Equipment: Beanbags (3), Plastic Bowling pins (6-10), & Floor Tape. Preparation: Set up the bowling pins in a triangle formation. Place a tape line on the floor 5 to 10 feet away. I use cones. Place the beanbags on the tape line (I use yarn balls and baskets). Objective: Students knock down at least four bowling pins (I have student take turns). B) Ice Hockey Equipment: Cones (4-5), Hockey stick (1 per student), Puck and/or beanbag (1 per student). Set the cones out in a straight line about 3 feet from one another. Place the hockey stick and puck (or beanbag) at the beginning cone. Objective: Students dribble a hockey puck through cones without hitting the cones. C) Sledding Equipment: Scooter (1 per student), Cones (4) Place the four cones in a line 3 feet from one another. Put the scooters at the starting cone. Objective: Students either lie on their bellies or sit on their bottoms and push themselves through a maze of cones without touching them. D) Skiing Equipment: Set of Buddy Walkers (4), Cones (2) Place the cones 5-7 feet away from each other. Put the Buddy Walkers at the starting cone. Objective: Students use the Buddy Walkers to travel to the other cone & back. E) Ice-Skating Equipment: Carpet Squares (6), Cones (2) Lay the carpet squares, carpet-side down at one of the cones. Objective: Students stand on two carpet squares and slide to the other cone. Concerns: Students definitely will need help with the Buddy Walkers as well as using the scooters (watching for pinched fingers and hair within the wheels). This idea is from Maggie C. Burk. E-learning can be real-time or self-paced, also known as "synchronous" or "asynchronous" learning. Additionally, e-learning is considered to be "tethered" (connected to something) and presented in a formal and structured manner. In contrast, mobile learning is often self-paced, un-tethered and informal in its presentation. e-learning m-learning lecture in classroom or internet labs learning anywhere, anytime e-mail-to-e-mail instantaneous messaging private location no geographic boundaries travel time to reach to internet site no travel time with wireless internet connectivity Because mobile devices have the power to make learning even more widely available and accessible, mobile devices are considered by many to be a natural extension of e-learning.
