The printer allows users to manufacture an object using a digital modeling program or by downloading a design from Makerbot’s Thingaverse site. Next, I showed students three videos from Makerbot’s site about explorers who have used 3D printing to invent, create, refine and benefit humanity. Technology enabled many of these inventors to collaborate across continents. In the case of Spuni, they set out to improve the design of baby spoons. With Zboard, 3D printing helped entrepreneurs make their products by facilitating the iterative process of design. As a country-wide approach however this is quite radical. "Finnish schools are obliged to introduce a period of "phenomenon-based teaching" at least once a year. These projects can last several weeks. In Helsinki, they are pushing the reforms at a faster pace with schools encouraged to set aside two periods during the year for adopting the new approach. There has been much conversation about challenges to online global collaboration and how teachers are overcoming barriers to effective implementation of this. With over 20 years experience developing online global collaborative opportunities across the world, these are my essential ‘Norms of Global Collaboration’. They are behaviours to be practiced in all possible modes (synchronous and asynchronous) when collaborating globally.I am interested in what you, as a global educator and collaborator, think. What would you add? What would you change?  Allow time for effective communicationCommunicating from opposite sides of the world means we need to allow at least 24 hours for partners to respond, and not become frustrated if in fact it is more than this, but obliged to nudge for a response beyond 48 hours. This is where collaborative tools such as Google docs or wikis have set the standard for what can be called ‘effective’ communication. New text, images, links, and comments can be left asynchronously for global partners to respond to on the document or page. The goal is to keep communication localised to the discussion and not in emails.Use clear, global language Remember at all times there is often more than one way to spell a word or to describe a thing or situation. Therefore global partners are not ‘wrong’ when they spell differently to you. Clarity is achieved by using common language such as referring to months rather than seasons, providing timezone conversion charts (e.g. http://timeanddate.com) for meetings, and being able to convert temperatures and measurements as needed, to mention a few.Question actively for cultural understandingMisunderstandings between global partnerships can be avoided with more careful questioning - either synchronous or asynchronous. Nations have unique cultural sayings that, although usually very funny, do not support understanding unless questioned and explained. For example, a typical Australian statement might be ‘I will put my case in the boot before we go’, meaning they will put their bag in the closed compartment of the car. How odd! Inquiry-based collaboration is encouraged at all times.Be reliable and visible onlineWhen collaborating around a table face-to-face it is almost impossible to not contribute as the norm is to allow for and request opinions from all. However in an online scenario it is VERY easy to be ‘invisible’ by not responding or contributing to online spaces. Make sure all members of the collaboration understand how and where to contribute and what the expectation is for doing this reliably (timeframe, frequency)Contribute and respond oftenTo avoid the breakdown of collaborative relationships frequent and responses from all contributors will help make the collaboration productive. It is not only about contribution however, collaboration relies on interaction and responding. So, adding your ideas and material and then becoming invisible is also not acceptable in a collaborative environment. Responses to individual contributions fosters problem solving and co-creation of outcomes through ongoing discussion and knowledge buildingShare local and global dataAll global collaborators are encouraged to share local data - often one of the most challenging things to do. Seeing and hearing things familiar in daily life makes them almost too ‘normal’ to share and a feeling of disbelief that someone else would find it interesting or relevant. Sharing local images, occurrences, statistics etc. helps to build empathy between collaborators and to build a global data collectionShare questions about global topics - do not be afraid to say you do not understand or do not know - this is where global partners, in true collaboration, will support new understandings via their frequent responses to questions and commentsAim for co-created outputA well-designed online global collaboration is about co-creating something. This final norm aims for understanding about this co-creation and encourages all collaborators to work towards this. It may be a co-created statement or document that all have contributed to, or a co-created multimedia artefactInnovation, Leadership, Creativity, Collaboration

This week I am in Brisbane for the @EduTech_AU (EduTECHAU) conference. It makes a change to have such a large and reputable event less than a 2-hour drive from home (no flights!). I am most curious about this event as there is a lot of buzz, thousands of Australian educators and many well-known international speakers coming in. I am not speaking, but have been invited on by Microsoft to interact and be a vocal participant in round table events.Yesterday a small group of us gathered at Ormiston College for a school visit - EduTECH Media Tour. (Because I am here with a 'media' label I have been asked on more than one occasion what I know about education - I am handing out business cards to provide context). The program organised by leaders at Ormiston was most impressive. We visited classes in Year 1, 5, 8 and then a student showcase. We had teacher 'ignite' talks and then a staff panel to answer our questions. The latter showcase and staff activities were held in the most beautiful 'Learning Innovation Centre' (LIC) (re-designed library space) where facilities are provided for small group, large group, private and more public gatherings - all supported by access to screens, audio, white boards etc.  Ormiston, a K-12 non-denominational Christian ethos school with about 1300 students is led by Brett Webster who has a passion for learning enabled technology and a vision for the school that supports many initiatives across the curriculum. The Dean for E-Learning, Tamara Sullivan (@t_amarasullivan) is confidently vocal about what teachers are doing to embrace 21C teaching and learning through online collaboration. So, briefly this is what I saw.....Year 1: Building bridges in MinecraftStudents collaborating via Minecraft to build landmarks and then using this for creative writing. This student below, Bo, was very passionate about his bridge and pointed to his friends in MC with him - and they help each other to complete the project.Year 5: Extension Maths using Office MixThis small group were 'fishing for feedback' on their work, using the features of Office Mix to provide text and audio-based peer feedback.Year 8: Science class using OneNote Class NotebookThis class were collaborating on a science problem - the volume of a particular cube, and working in real teams to collect data then share this via a collaborative online space (OneNote). The girls I spoke to were able to clearly articulate what they were doing and how the technology supported this learning process and were also very enthusiastic about having access to laptops and online spaces bith from school and from home. Teacher presentationsOrmiston provides resources and funding for innovation in learning, and teachers leading this shared their work with us. This included new approaches to professional development (anywhere, anytime, blended); using Yammer to develop a community of practice amongst the staff; and using Office 365 and Mosaic for staff collaboration. The term '21st century learning and teaching' was used a lot....the leader of the LIC used the term 'social capitol' and shared how teachers are now coming on board with social learning within the school - sharing, supporting, being visible and modeling this in their own learning so that it can more naturally be 'transferred' to the students.Student showcasesI was most impressed that many students had taken the time to share their use of technology to support learning. The one showcase that stood out for me was Grade 12 students sharing how they used Skype for Business for accelerated learning in mathematics. Every Monday evening they had been meeting their teacher online and subsequently were now ahead in the course and could consider extension activities (eg a local university course etc.).Overall the work being done at Ormiston is showing us that effective and reliable technologies do support online collaborative learning. Platforms have been set up, students have public and private spaces to work alone and in collaboration, they are connected with each other and the teachers online and co-creation, peer-review and problem-solving are effectively documented and shared. It is early days yet for Ormiston College in terms of online collaborative learning, and my question to the panel about conversations for taking the learning more global showed this has not been a real focus yet, as with the use of social media or probably other Web 2.0 tools that can provide choices and freedoms for further sharing and collaboration within and beyond the school. However, the community building taking place and the digital fluency that is being built amongst all learners is commendable and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to see the school in action.Heading to day 1 Edutech now.......Innovation, Leadership, Creativity, Collaboration

University of Adelaide is phasing out lectures | afr.com "The small-group experiences are what it known as "blended learning" or "flip the classroom" - a new style of teaching that many universities worldwide are experimenting with. Instead of sitting in lecture theatres to learn the basic material, students learn it in online courses. They then bring that knowledge into the classroom where, in small groups guided by an instructor, they discuss what they have learnt and use the knowledge to solve problems. The University of Adelaide calls it a "small-group discovery experience". This year it's been introduced for second-year students and next year it will go to third-year. After that it will be available to honours and masters students." tags: education pedagogy Screen Addiction Is Taking a Toll on Children - The New York Times tags: research education technology UNESCO launches World Library of Science - Free Online Science Education Resource tags: education science free UNESCO ISTE 2015: Global Education Day Resource Jam Excellent resources shared by @Craig Perrier fro the Global Ed Day at #SITE2015 tags: education ISTE15 globaled The Best Ways a Teacher Can Demonstrate Leadership in the Classroom? | C. Once again - the 13th year in a row - I made the trip across the Pacific to attend the International Society for Technology in Education conference - this year in Philadelphia again. With about 20,000 people attending ISTE 2015 was its usual hectic and inspiring event. This year I went with the role and associated duties of Global Collaboration PLN President. I also ran a workshop, and co-presented a Global Poster and a presentation....amongst other things. One of the highlights was the Global Education day organised by Lucy Gray and Steve Hargadon where 300+ educators came together for the afternoon to explore global connections and collaborations. In addition I was able to talk to many about the book I am writing called The Global Educator and am madly finishing this off now (deadline pending!).Here are some pics and further highlights ISTE 2015......See my random pics and screenshots from ISTE 2015 on FlickrA big thank you to members of the ISTE Global Collaboration PLN for their hard work - running the Community Networking fair session, the Birds of a Feather gathering and our brief 'team' meeting to collect thoughts about goals for the coming year. More updates coming soon.  Congratulations to Pernille Ripp - Award winner ISTE Global Collaboration PLN for her Global Read Aloud project. Thanks to Ann Michaelsen for co-presenting the global poster session!Great work by Tina, Betsye and Barbara for global presentation! My Ignite Presentation at Global Education day"Putting the 'global' into online collaboration" Putting the 'global' into online collaboration from Julie LindsayNorms of Online Global CollaborationEight Norms of Online Global Collaboration to support global collaborative educators and students.   Norms of Online Global Collaboration from Julie Lindsay Thoughts about ISTE2016.....Innovation, Leadership, Creativity, Collaboration

Outcome vs. Process: Different Incarnations of Personalization Yong Zhao shares his thoughts about personalized learning. Generally speaking, personalization can be put into two categories: process personalization and outcome personalization. Process personalization enables students to enjoy choice in the learning process, whereas outcome personalization allows students to define the end results of their learning. Process personalization is by far the most prominent version in education today because the current education paradigm has a predetermined outcome for all students. That is, no matter how one gets there, we want everyone to get to the same place: mastery of the knowledge and skills prescribed in the authoritative curriculum or standards. tags: personalizedlearning education Developing Pupil Competencies Through eTwinning Publication by eTwinning tags: globalcollaboration education globaleducator Global citizenship education: topics and learning objectives; 2015 - 232993e.pdf tags: globalcitizenship education 10 Awesome Apps for Teaching Global Awareness tags: globalawareness education Global Empowered Kids Initiative of Marc Prensky - supporting and sharing achievements of young people who are changing the world. tags: socialentrepreneurship education New Pedagogies for Deep Learning tags: pedagogy education Free Mystery Skype Curriculum for Schools | Jonathan Wylie: Instructional Technology Consultant tags: mystery skype education What Good Can Blogging Do? | Amy Carrier | LinkedIn tags: education Blogging Intercultural understanding | Asia Education Foundation The Asia Education Foundation Intercultural Understanding Toolkit has three categories: Definitions, Curriculum, Pedagogy tags: interculturalunderstanding toolkit education globalunderstanding Globally competent?  See more images at the cross-post on the Flat Connections Blog.We are about to start a new set of online global collaborative projects in September 2015 through Flat Connections. It is timely to consider highlights from last semester - and there were many!A Week in the Life - Student SummitsOne of the features of Flat Connections projects is the opportunity for students to come into a virtual environment and share their learning through a summit. We do these for the Flat Connections Global Project, Digiteen/Tween and the A Week in the Life Project.A highlight for me were the A Week in the Life Student Summits Images below show summits hosted by the Anglo-American School of Sofia, Bulgaria where Grade 3 students presented and talked about the global issues challenge they collaborated on with others across the globe. This gathering included parents from AASS, other classrooms from Australia and Thailand and Bulgaria and a guest educator from New Zealand. Thank you to Christine Szeryk in Bulgaria, Danielle Lawlor in Adelaide, Sonya Van Schaijik in New Zealand, Kate O'Connell from Thailand - and to the students! In addition, a big congratulations to the Lincoln School Nepal with teachers Sudha Rajouria and Brian Fawcett - wonderful student summit, despite many students having left Nepal after the earthquakes.Flat Connections Global Project  - Awards and Summits The Flat Connections Global Project culminated in an online Awards Ceremony (explore the BEST student videos via that link!) to recognise student achievement. Thank you to our set of judges and to our Meta-Judge, Terry Smith, Assistant Professor at Radford University, USA. Students also presented their learning via Summits  - the slideshow below captures some of this excitement.
