How To Deliver eLearning Faster By Using Master Courses
In the 19th century, Britain built the world’s first and very best rail system. It was so good that countries from around the world replicated it. Now the rail systems in many major economies run comfortably, on time, and cheaply. Countries were fortunate to learn from Britain’s mistakes and eventually build even better rail systems.
Building from the bottom up is sometimes the only way to make a product the way it needs to be made. eLearning designers and developers, like rail builders, try to build with blocks that have already been created. Why? Because you can be certain the elements are best practice. They’ve been tried and tested, free of errors, and inefficiencies.
What Are Master Courses?
Master Courses, often called templates, are reusable themes that you can use on multiple projects. All design aspects, code, and interactions you develop in a Master Course can be reused each time you create a course. You can base any eLearning project on a Master Course. In some eLearning development tools such as Elucidat, changes that you make to a Master Course are automatically applied to all linked projects. This saves you time (and money) since you don’t have to go through and edit each project one at a time.
Why Αre Master Courses Effective?
Let’s look at 3 common scenarios to see how Master Courses make delivering eLearning easier and more efficient.
Scenario 1: Multiple client projects.
Imagine you are charged with creating product training materials for several clients. They all require almost identical courses, but you want to personalize each course by adding the client’s logo or brand colors. By using a Master Course, you can make the courses once and then release slightly different versions to each client. Then if you make a change to the content in your Master Course, the change will automatically get pushed to each of the projects linked to it. This saves you hours of development time and significantly reduces your costs.
Related: 3 Ways To Reduce eLearning Development Costs
Scenario 2: Product training changes.
Picture your marketing team changing the name of one of your products. Instead of going through and changing each instance of the product name in the course by hand, you can edit the product name in the Master Course and the change is pushed to all courses.
This flexibility makes eLearning maintenance more efficient. You can now make updates on a regular basis to ensure learners have the most up-to-date content.
Related: 3 Ways Cloud Publishing Can Save You Time On eLearning Maintenance
Scenario 3: Localization.
Now imagine that you are charged with creating a general health and safety course for all your organization’s employees. Your organization is large and the workforce is located in different countries. Some employees are full time and others are contractors, but all have various levels of digital and reading literacy.
For example, last year I authored a course for a large French engineering firm who hired workers on a daily or weekly basis to help build railways all over the world. The course was created entirely using imagery and iconography to convey key life-saving messages for a user group that included postgraduates and people who couldn’t read. The training material was taken onto construction sites to help generate conversations in local languages about best safety practices.
If you release courses in multiple languages, you have the ability to create a Master Course with the pages and assessments set up and then create a project for each language in which you want to release it. This means you don’t have to start each different language course from scratch.
The timesavings are really seen when you need to make a change. For example, if you want to make an update in accordance with legal requirements or company policy, you only need to do this in the Master Course and then that change is pushed out to all the projects belonging to the Master.
Final Takeaways
In summary, Master Courses (templates) offer 3 key benefits:
Build once, use many times.
Set up a course once -as a Master- and then produce all subsequent courses that require similar content from that Master Course.
Update one course.
Make updates at the Master level and the changes are automatically pushed out to all the courses below it. This saves you the time needed change each and every course manually.
Quickly personalize courses.
Use Master Courses to personalize projects with different imagery, branding, logos, and languages.

What Are The Benefits Of mLearning?
In this article I will touch upon the benefits of mLearning, why it is gaining momentum, and why it must be a significant part of your learning strategy. Additionally, I will share 5 examples that showcase successful application of mLearning. Let us start with the benefits:
Flexibility to learners.
At the top of the benefits list is the flexibility mLearning offers. This includes:
Flexibility and choice of device to access learning "anytime-anywhere".
Flexibility of learning with more varied formats (videos, podcasts, and so on).
Better completion rates and higher retention.
The bite-sized or micro-learning approach makes it easier for learners to initiate, complete, and retain learning better.
Collaborative learning.
It is a great way to engage with peers to share learning experiences and be part of communities of specific practices.
Higher engagement.
The experiences are more immersive and statistics reveal that more learners complete the courses through mLearning than traditional eLearning.
Multi-device support.
The same course is available on varied devices ranging from PCs, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
Performance Support.
mLearning is becoming the preferred approach to provide Performance Support intervention as mobile devices are an intrinsic part of the learners’ work-flow. This facilitates an easy access to information while at work and increases the probability of usage and retrieval.
Learning path.
Mobile devices can also be used to update learners on their "learning path" thereby facilitating "learning as a continuum". With more people depending on phone-based organizers, integrating links in organizers to commence/resume the courses saves time for learners.
What Is Driving mLearning’s Rapid Adoption?
Changing learner profiles.
The mix of learners in organizations now includes traditional learners, baby-boomers, Gen X, and Gen Y. A significant percentage of learners (particularly Gen Y) prefer using tablets and smartphones for learning.
How learners learn.
As an extension to the changing learner demographics, more and more learners seek different formats to learn (particularly videos, podcasts, access to bite-sized learning, or micro-learning on the go). They also want learning to be part of their work-flow (that is, self directed).
Changing learning device preferences.
This is resulting in initiatives like Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) facilitating learning on the device of the learners’ choice.
Maturing of tools and technologies.
Particularly, over the last three years:
Most Learning Management System platforms now offer the required flexibility of mobile delivery as well as platforms for social learning.
The range of available mLearning authoring tools has widened. The tools can now be used to create both rapid as well as high-end custom solutions.
More options to pick the approach that is most suited for learners have emerged. You can now opt for:
Adaptive frameworks.
These are designed for a single build to work on PCs, laptops, and tablets. (You can also have a variant called Adaptive+ framework that can provide a supplement of the primary learning on the smartphones. However, the smartphone build is a separate build and is normally a lighter build than the primary course.)
Responsive frameworks.
These are designed for a single build to work on PCs, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
Can You Manage Without A mLearning Strategy Today?
Well, the answer is rather obvious; this is a trend that cannot be ignored and the need of the hour is to adopt a two-pronged approach:
Migration of legacy courses.
You can use this opportunity to redesign some of your older courses toο and also get the multi-device flexibility. This can create a better learning experience and provide the flexibility for learners to access the courses on the device of their choice.
mLearning strategy for new development.
This should be able to leverage the power of mobile devices to create an immersive learning experience. As highlighted earlier, you can opt for Adaptive or Responsive approaches.
Where Can mLearning Be Applied?
mLearning is a great fit for formal learning and Performance Support. It can also be used effectively to foster a collaborative or social learning environment.
Let me illustrate how it can be used to provide enhanced learning experiences through my favorite 5 examples.
mLearning Example 1
Induction Program With Gamification: This is my favorite example that showcases how you can use gamification for an Induction program.
We chose the 100 days Induction cum onboarding plan to map to a theme of a mission that needed learners to clear various levels within the stipulated time. It also had leaderboards to enable them to assess how they are faring against the other team members.
You can also refer to my article Benefits of Gamification in eLearning to see how it can improve learner recall and retention.
mLearning Example 2
Time Management Featuring Immersive Learning Strategies: The difference here lies in the way we engaged the learners with the time management concepts.
We removed "Select next to continue" by making the information flow more intuitive. To engage learners further, we brought in a few gamification concepts (interactive exercises) in the learning path.
mLearning Example 3
Compliance-Combating Money Laundering: This example reflects how you can enhance a legacy course during migration to mLearning format.
The legacy course was text-heavy and as you will see from the screenshots, we relooked at the visual approach in the mLearning format to reduce clutter. We also did extensive layering of content to further limit the on-screen text.
mLearning Example 4
Agile Development Methodology Featuring Interactive Video: This example is also one of my favorites as it reflects marrying the Agile concept to an innovative strategy, that is, interactive video (both reflect changing dynamics).
The content adapted well to fielding questions that the learners may have had in their mind as the Agile approach is a relatively new concept. We were able to leverage on the power of interactive video to clearly establish the gain in a very short run-length.
mLearning Example 5
Industry Vertical (Oil and Gas) Featuring Thematic Visuals: As you will notice in the screenshot, we have used industry specific visual design as the theme for the entire course.
I hope this article has given you the required insights to determine how you can use mLearning effectively in your organization. If you have any comments or suggestions, please reach out to me.

What eLearning Professionals Should Know About Positive Reinforcement In Online Training
According to the operant conditioning theory, when reinforcement, whether positive or negative, and punishment are applied in a learning environment they can modify behavior. Especially positive reinforcement, such as encouragement and rewarding, can strengthen a behavior and shape skill performance in a desired manner.
In a corporate environment, positive reinforcement is often used to enhance employees’ motivation, decrease absenteeism, and increase productivity. It sounds ideal for enhancing the effectiveness of your online training courses, but how exactly can you use this powerful technique as an eLearning professional? In this article, I'll show you 5 effective tips to achieve the best results possible; but first, let's have a look at how using positive reinforcement benefits online training.
4 Benefits Of Using Positive Reinforcement In Online Training
Positive reinforcement helps your employees feel more comfortable and more confident about their abilities. But this is not the only advantage of using it:
It boosts performance.
Lack of positive feedback often leads to dissatisfaction, and dissatisfaction leads to poor performance. On the contrary, as praise makes it more likely for a desired behavior to reoccur in the future, positively reinforcing an employee who has learned a new technique during online training increases the chances of good performance happening again.
It increases productivity.
Feeling confident produces more ideas, more innovation, and more creativity; when your employees receive recognition, they become eager to learn more in order to accept more responsibility and, consequently, this increases their job commitment and productivity levels.
It fosters a positive work atmosphere.
When your employees feel that their efforts are appreciated, work morale is improved. This creates a positive atmosphere in the workplace, which encourages effective teamwork and collaboration.
It creates a sense of worth.
When your employees have doubts about their online training performance, they also have little faith in their abilities in general. Positive reinforcement reassures them that their learning efforts are recognized and this makes them feel good about themselves, increasing their sense of self-worth.
5 Tips To Use Positive Reinforcement In Online Training
It is clear by now that positive reinforcement is an essential element of successful online training. Here are 5 ways to use it effectively:
Set clear eLearning objectives and goals.
To determine desired behavior you need to set clear eLearning objectives; when your employees know exactly what is expected of them, it is more likely that they will succeed. Unclear expectations and learning goals frustrate employees, as they don’t have enough information about making the necessary changes. To reinforce successfully, you need to be specific; only then you will be able to increase your employees’ tendency to attempt the expected behavior and achieve results.
Implement praise to stimulate intrinsic motivation.
You may already know that intrinsic motivation is one of the most powerful human drives; it inspires people to explore and actualize their potentials and is able to convert any online training course into a rewarding eLearning experience. In order to stimulate your employees’ intrinsic motivation, consider following this simple technique: First, determine the desired behavior using clear learning objectives, as mentioned above; second, allow employees to practice behaviors; and finally, recognize the desired behavior. This final step will increase both positive reaction and intrinsic motivation, as feeling positively about doing something (i.e. learning and performing well) increases the chances to keep doing it. Positive reinforcement when your employees engage in desired actions, such as higher performance, will help them understand that achieving results will make them feel good about themselves, and thus they will become motivated to keep trying and have their efforts be recognized again.
Offer positive, constructive feedback.
When positive feedback is exaggerated, the tendency to attempt the desired behavior is reduced. Effective positive reinforcement means genuine positive reinforcement; if you treat your employees like children, praising them over insignificant achievements, they will feel dissatisfied and thus demotivated to "please" you. This is why you need to always provide positive, but sincere feedback. Find ways to build in opportunities for recognition that reflects true effort, and make clear that participating in online training will contribute to your employees’ professional development. Reinforce positive actions by offering specific information about what is done right, and show genuine appreciation for real achievements.
Make sure that your online training course is relevant to your audience.
When your employees take online training courses that are irrelevant to their real work situation, it makes them feel that they are wasting their time; thus, it is only natural that they lose interest and their motivation levels decrease. Positive reinforcement only works when it has meaning; how would you feel if you were praised for reaching a goal that didn’t really make any difference to your personal and professional life? This is why you need to always find ways to establish relevance in your online training programs. Consider customizing your online training course to create an emotional connection between their employees and their online training, as well as to motivate them improve their performance. Offer stories and eLearning scenarios with real world benefits and help your audience understand that what they are learning is important to both them and the organization. When employees see that their online training is vital to their success, positive reinforcement when they achieve results has much more value.
Time your positive reinforcement carefully.
Finally, to encourage positive behavior and increase the chances of your employees repeating it, you need to make sure that the timing of encouragement is right. Ensure that your positive reinforcement is:
Immediate.
Praising your employees immediately after they achieved, for example, strong teamwork or quality production motivates them to stay engaged in doing good work and makes it more likely for them to repeat it in the future.
Gradual.
Reinforcement should follow performance improvement, which is, more often than not, gradual.
Proportional.
Again, exaggerated positive reinforcement leads to decreased motivation.
Frequent, but unpredictable.
Random positive reinforcement is more effective, as when your employees are expecting to be regularly praised they lose interest. Make them feel that the bar can be raised at any moment and keep them alert.
Appreciating desirable employee behavior is critical to increasing your workforce’s motivation in order to boost their performance. Follow these tips and make sure that your employees not only turn desired behaviors into a habit, but also feel recognized, valued, and inspired.
Now that you know the benefits of positive reinforcement and how to use it in your online training program, you may be interested in learning more about motivating your employees in a positive way. Read the article 11 Tips To Encourage Positive Attitude In eLearning and find out how encouraging positive attitude sets the right tone for an eLearning course that greatly increases the hope, engagement, and motivation levels of your corporate audience.

What Parents Need To Know About Blended Learning
Parents often complain that their children spend endless hours in front of PCs, mobile screens, tablets, and the internet. With schools jumping on to blended learning classrooms and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) teaching culture, problems seem to have multiplied. A concerned parent of a child whose school jumped on to the cyber-wagon recently told me "It has become hard for us to know whether our daughter is doing her studies online or browsing the web just for fun". Another parent told me about their teenage son who was using the pretext of BYOD to buy new smartphones and tablets in order to flaunt. And when such stories get coupled with research news about how taking mobile phones away could improve kids’ grades, the whole thing becomes even more alarming. Most parents are confused about how to react towards using technology for teaching: Is it a good thing for studies? Is it just a passing fad? Is this a serious approach to studying?
The following 5 tips may help parents of kids studying in digitally-enhanced classrooms to swim the currents of uncertainty:
Know that technology in classroom is to support learning (and not all cool tech toys support learning).
Number one tip for becoming a "careful" parent of a cyber-school child is to never be fooled by a kid telling you he/she needs that new gadget to study better. The major goal of educational technology is to facilitate the educational goals and learning outcomes of a classroom. Every new cool gadget or tech toy does not automatically become an edTech tool. Education technology tools are carefully selected by schools and educators to enhance learning outcomes. It does not work the other way round. That is, you cannot simply buy a newly available gadget and be sure that your kid will study when using it. Even when a school introduces a new edTech / eLearning tool, software program, and a learning interface, or in fact asks your child to bring their own device for studying, parents need to freely discuss this with the teachers and school authorities and get information about how this will enhance their child’s learning, as well as what the interaction and assessment process will be. On the other hand, of course, parents themselves can encourage their children to understand the educational purpose of technology and of the entertainment gadgets they already own. For instance, an iPad lying at home can easily become a programming interface to teach your kids coding with robotics. Or a smartphone is not just for texting, but can be used to learn and create useful content through various app features.
Distinguish trusted online learning sources from non-trusted sources.
As much as it is a school’s prerogative to ensure children’s safety online, digital media literacy and credible, ethical internet research is a skill that parents can easily teach their kids at home. When the school gives certain blended learning based homework tasks and online assignments, or assigns any other online learning activity, parents must sit down with their children to guide them on credible learning platforms and ethical use of internet for learning. Assist your children in completing their online assignments by directing them how to look up for information online without getting lost in the pool of web-links. Teach them how to choose between trusted learning sources and unsupported claims and theories. Make them aware of cyber security norms, malware, and phishing. Never let a child make unsupervised purchases of apps, software, eBooks, or any other "learning material". Not only does this make the task of online learning and research simpler, more directed, and engaging for your child, but also makes it much safer.
Stay connected with your child’s school and teachers.
Most parents are cautious with cyber security threats and supervise their child’s web activities. But when it comes to eLearning platforms, parents may in fact be baffled by the inclusion of technology resources in education. The easiest way to deal with this is to connect with your child’s teacher/school. Ask the school and/or teacher to handover a resource guide that will direct you about the essentials of eLearning and educational technology resources. Also, know beforehand about any kind of gadgets, software, or other edTech tools that your child will need to bring to the classroom. Without the teacher’s saying, do not invest money in cool gadgets. Digital literacy among parents is another important skill to be able to judge the credibility of academic resources and the effectiveness of edTech tools and eLearning platforms that your children’s school is using. Always maintain a direct contact with their teachers about your children’s learning progress in the online learning environment. Keep yourself aware of the curriculum and assessment instruction strategies that the school is employing. Also, understand the measures that the school is taking to ensure your child’s safety online. If you initially find it hard to learn and understand about the technology incorporation, do not hesitate to approach the teachers or to learn about them through various online edTech educators and blogs.
Know that "blended" is not equal to "online".
Life has become so much simpler post internet and search engines. Ranging from books, book reports, study notes, answers to every other piece of information students might need for their grades, knowledge or learning is readily available on the internet. However, this is also axing the sheen of books and other offline learning materials. Most students do not want to bother with reading long drawn books when chapter summaries are easily available on the internet. So much so, I recently found one student using Reddit to seek answers to his entire homework set. Parents need to inculcate the spirit of blended learning in the right format in kids. It is about utilizing both offline and online learning technology and resources to deliver learning outcomes. This in no way means using only the internet for studying. Parents must set rules and limits to the use of technology even for studying. Talk to your child’s teachers and understand the proportion of time the child needs to divide between online and offline resources. Encourage book reading practices in children right from the start. Make frequent visits to public libraries and teach your kids the art of researching and reading in offline format as well. Encourage your kids’ school to recommend a heavy mix of offline reading resources in the curriculum as well, instead of solely depending on edTech and eLearning solutions.
Beware of self-paced and flexible learning schedules.
One of the major benefits of eLearning platforms, especially those involving asynchronous instructions, is the flexibility to schedule your lesson at any time and to set your own pace of study. But most students can take this too literally and understand "as and when they feel like it". As a result, there can be heaps of procrastinated lessons and pending worksheets in the end, defeating the overall purpose of learning and knowledge gain. As a parent, it is your duty to set up a flexible study schedule for your child but not an overly relaxed one. Make sure that the study schedule is followed, the deadlines for submissions are met, and the learning goals are right on track. While the study pace must be tailored to your kid’s learning abilities, it is best to connect with their classmates and their parents to know whether your child is falling far behind the rest of the class.
In the end, it is most important for parents to remember that while the instructional mediums and techniques may change, the end goal is to enable learning and enhance your child’s knowledge. New educational technologies and eLearning platforms will keep coming up, but this in no way diminishes a parent’s role in their child’s education and development. If anything, it might just change the way it is done. By simply being fully aware of the pros and cons of blended learning and education technology, parents will be able to truly utilize the benefits of technology in education as well as to help their children do the same.
We would love to hear more in the comments below about your experiences as parents of students studying in blended classrooms. Also, if you are a teacher, what initiatives have you taken to help your students’ parents navigate through your edTech-based teaching techniques?
