Differentiated Instruction In eLearning
Differentiated instruction in eLearning meets the individual needs of learners by custom tailoring not only the eLearning content, but also how the information is conveyed and how learners demonstrate their understanding of the subject matter. This allows us to perceive differentiated instruction in eLearning in terms of content, process, and final product, respectively.
Every online learner has their own interests, strengths, learning needs, and knowledge base. Differentiated instruction in eLearning gives eLearning professionals the opportunity to create eLearning courses that honor these differences, instead of trying to make the learner fit into a "typical learner" mold. In this article, I’ll be highlighting the best practices of applying differentiated instruction in eLearning, sharing 5 tips that will help you use this highly effective approach in your next eLearning course.
4 Ways To Identify The Needs Of Individual Learners
There are many ways that eLearning professionals can cater to the individual needs of their learners. However, these are the main principles that are found in all successful differentiated eLearning courses:
Acknowledging diverse learning needs.
Different learners have different areas that may need improvement. Likewise, learners assimilate information at their own pace, and they have their own unique set of skills. Acknowledging and identifying learning needs is essential in the differentiated learning process.
Ongoing assessment.
Online facilitators must assess and identify learners’ strengths and weaknesses throughout the eLearning course to determine if they need additional support.
Group collaboration.
In addition to self-guided online exercises, learners must also be able to participate in group collaboration online activities which give them the opportunity to observe different learning needs and benefit from the experiences of others.
Learners’ empowerment.
Learners are given the power to create their own eLearning experiences by choosing which tasks they will complete and how they will approach the online task. This empowers them to become active participants, due to the fact that they have greater control over the learning process.
5 Tips for Applying Differentiated Instruction in eLearning
Give learners the opportunity to progress at their own speed.
Not every learner is going to be able to speed through the eLearning course. This is why it’s important to give them the ability to progress through the eLearning experience at their own pace. Offer support along the way for those who may struggle with a topic or module, and allow those who complete the task more quickly to move forward when they are ready. If you are going to be doing timed exercises, such as assessments or scenarios, then make sure that you leave enough time for reflection, critical thinking, and still offer enough challenge for more advanced learners.
Offer supplemental learning resources.
Providing supplemental resources, such as links to helpful guides, articles, or videos, is beneficial for all learning needs. Learners who may be struggling can click on the resource links when they need additional help with a topic, while advanced learners can use the resources to learn even more about a subject or idea that interests them. For learners who may need additional support, because they are finding the work too challenging or not challenging enough, offer them a place where they can find the help they need. For example, you can setup a contact form or provide them with an email address where they can get answers to questions or address their concerns. Create a forum where they can receive peer-based feedback and support if an instructor is not available.
Create an individualized learning plan.
At the beginning of the eLearning course encourage your learners to create their own learning goals and objectives, then use them to develop a customized learning plan that will meet their individual learning needs. You can also ask them to create a timeline which highlights when they would like to meet specific milestones. At the end of the eLearning course ask your learners to evaluate their learning plan to see if they successfully met their goals, or if they may require additional support to achieve the desired outcome.
Research the specific needs of your learners.
This is, without a doubt, one of the most crucial elements of a successful differentiated eLearning strategy. Before you can cater to the individual needs of your learner, you have to know what those needs are. You have to know what they need to get out of the eLearning experience, and what they hope to achieve by the time they’ve completed the eLearning course. Conduct surveys and focus groups that identify what they need to know, and how the prefer to fill this learning gap. You can also assess your learners at the beginning of the eLearning course to get an accurate idea of their current knowledge base and which particular skills or information you may need to integrate into the curriculum.
Clarify expectations right from the start.
Regardless of their individual learning style or needs, every learner in your audience must know what is expected of them and which eLearning activities and delivery methods will be utilized throughout the eLearning course. On that same note, they should also be aware of what they can expect to receive by participating in the eLearning course. Develop a set of clear instructions that state what real world benefits the eLearning course can provide, as well as how they can apply the knowledge they will learn in real world settings.
It is impossible to create a unique eLearning experience for every member of your audience, but you can help them achieve their individual learning goals and meet their needs by using these differentiated eLearning tips and best practices when designing your next eLearning course.

How To Create A High Impact Learning Function
The Towards Maturity Benchmark™ helps organizations focus on improving performance of the Learning and Development team. We do this by helping compare the outputs of an organization’s learning strategy with their peers. More importantly, the Benchmark helps Learning and Development (L&D) leaders compare their tactics for achieving those outcomes against the top performers.
The Towards Maturity Index™ is the lead indicator at the heart of the Towards Maturity Benchmark™ process. Organizations in the top 10% of the index are twice as likely to achieve the benefits they seek from a modernized learning strategy and in 2014 reported 30% fewer barriers than their peers.
We asked some top performing organizations for their tips on how to create a high-impact learning function. This is what they said:
Involve learners up front by understanding their requirements.
Create opportunities for all to access (we included learning zones for our manufacturing plants).
Run a pilot that focuses on both technology and user engagement.
Ensure senior management give visible support from the beginning.
Align the organizational development plan with the business plan.
Engage the business, listen and set up in-touch strategically aligned Organizational Development (OD) - Learning and Development senior steering groups.
Develop an Organizational Development - Learning and Development operating model to align with the business plan and develop a Learning and Development Toolkit and up skill Learning and Development professionals to deliver impact.
Lead from the front - build opportunities for your Learning and Development team to accelerate and expand their capacity (to avoid being overlooked by the community you serve).
Model community and sharing and influence leaders to embrace it too.
Start adding value to your learner community by curating useful existing content in meaningful ways.
Consider how to build once and share across a variety of platforms - give staff choice by placing your learning in their own hands so it is accessible to them when and where they need it.
Create interactive job aids and templates to provide support and encourage consistent application of learning at the grassroots or at the moment of need, on the job.
Use existing internal social sharing platforms to not only share information and formulate discussion, but also to access global tools and templates.
The DNA of a Top Deck L&D Team infographic below shares some of the data from our Benchmark about the characteristics of Top Learning organizations:

A Guide To TalentLMS Pricing Plans And Options For eLearning That Fits Your Needs
Take TalentLMS, our Cloud powered Learning Management System offering, as an example. It’s always available, and there’s no need to install, upgrade, or backup anything. For you, there’s just the fun and productive part of creating and running your courses.
Eager to start? That's great, for in this article we’ll examine the available TalentLMS pricing options, so you can pick the one that matches your needs.
Free Learning Management System
Price-wise, it doesn't get any better than this: Our free tier is meant as a way to demo TalentLMS, but it can also be used as a very capable Learning Management System if you're a very small company or organization that is OK with the "up to 5 users" and "up to 10 courses" limit.
Unlike some other "free" plans that come with strings attached, our free plan doesn't have a time limit, and also doesn't require you to enter your credit card details to create an account.
TalentLMS Plans
Our programs come in "Standard" and "Unlimited" versions, which differ in the amount of courses, users, and features that are supported.
TalentLMS standard plans limit the total number of registered users based on a hard limit (e.g. 25 users for the Small Standard plan). You can delete a user to free a spot for another one, but you can't have more users than your plan supports.
Unlimited plans, on the other hand, allow for an unlimited number of users to be registered, but support a base number of "active users" per month (e.g. 25 users for our Small Unlimited plan). With an Unlimited plan you can have as many active users as you want by paying a small fee for each extra active user.
All plans are offered in annual and monthly billing options. Since the former are cheaper, they are recommended for all users, unless they only need to run a Learning Management System for a few months.
As for support, our team offers support for all account tiers, including the free one; this being the Cloud, backups, monitoring, and service updates handled automatically for you.
And with that, let’s have a look at our standard plans:
Standard Small.
Our small plan is great for, well, smaller companies or organizations (under 30-50 employees). Paying just $29/month (annually) is an extremely affordable way to have your own eLearning deployment that can support unlimited courses and up to 25 users.
Basic.
Next up from small is the basic plan, which comes to $99 per month (for annual billing) and allows the same unlimited courses, but increases the supported users up to 100, and adds Single Sign-On, so you can integrate it with your company's or organization's intranet.
Plus and Premium.
For larger businesses, but still in the realm of SMEs, there's our "Plus" plan, which for $199/month offers unlimited courses for up to 500 users, Single Sign-On support, and custom reporting. For a larger business that has to support a few hundred of employees (or students) and wants to do it on the cheap, "Plus" is the package we would recommend. Premium, the top of our Standard plans, has the exact same features as Plus, but for $349/month it doubles the amount of users you can train to a thousand.
Unlimited Plans.
Our 4 Unlimited Plans allow you to register an unlimited number of users, with pricing based only on the number of active users that login to your eLearning portal each month. Depending on the plan, there's an amount of active users that can be connected each month. Beyond that capacity, there's a charge of $4 for each additional active user. These plans are great for companies or organizations with a large potential student base but that only train a small part of it (e.g. want to eventually train 500 users in your organization, but only need to train 50 of them at a time). It's also great for companies wanting to sell courses, as you can let an unlimited number of users register (e.g. open a demo account) and only be charged for students that actively use your eLearning service. The 4 Unlimited Learning Management System plans are:
Small Unlimited, which offers 25 active users per month for $79/month.
Basic Unlimited, which offers 100 active users per month, Single Sign-On support and custom reports, for $179/month.
Plus Unlimited, which is the same as Basic Unlimited but ups the active users to 250, for $279/month.
Premium Unlimited, which doubles the active users to 500 for $379/month.
Annual Vs Monthly billing
The quoted prices all refer to the annual billing option, which offers a hefty discount compared to month-by-month pricing, but requires you to pay for a whole year ahead.
We believe that annual billing is the best (and more cost-effective) option for all kinds of businesses and organizations that want to run an eLearning service.
That said, if you need the flexibility to run an eLearning portal for just a couple of months or so, our monthly billing might be the better option for you.
Prices for monthly billing vary from $39/month for our Standard Small plan (compared to $29/month with annual billing) up to $459/month for our Standard Premium option (compared to $349/month).
Conclusion
Ready to deploy your own eLearning portal?
Take TalentLMS for a demo ride with our Free LMS plan create or visit our webpage to select the plan that best suits your needs (and wallet).
And if our standard plans are too small for your enterprise or organization, contact our sales department to learn about our custom eLearning plans.

Why eLearning Maintenance Can Be Time Consuming And Frustrating
When you begin a new eLearning project, always make sure you think about how you intend to maintain it into the future. There are 3 common challenges that can come to frustrate you down the track:
Controlling changes and future versions.
Make sure you agree on a scope of changes before starting a new product. For example, will changes be made on an annual or bi-annual basis? Will text, media, resources, and links need updating and if so, to what extent? How will you manage the project files on an ongoing basis? And do you have the resources and budget for future changes?
Republishing and testing.
Don’t forget that any changes and additions will require a thorough testing of the whole module. That means if you’re publishing a SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) package, you’ll need to run it through testing to make sure everything conforms and works.
Deploying to Learning Management System.
If you manage your client’s Learning Management System (LMS) or Learning Record Store (LRS), you’ll need to factor in deploying the module(s) and then testing again in the environment. The added costs and resources required to maintain eLearning cannot be ignored. To streamline your eLearning maintenance, you should consider using a tool with inbuilt cloud publishing.
How To Maximize eLearning Maintenance
Let’s look at 3 ways modern authoring tools with inbuilt cloud publishing -like Elucidat- can help you maintain eLearning more efficiently.
Changes can be logged and managed within the tool. This reduces the need to maintain separate documentation.
Project files are all together in the cloud. This removes the burden of maintaining files on your network and allows access to anyone with a login to work on the project.
Changes can be pushed to the Learning Management System without the need to republish project files and redeploy them.
Let’s look at some real world examples of how Elucidat’s cloud publishing feature can help you efficiently maintain eLearning courses without draining your budget.
1. Product training: Product name has changed.
Imagine your marketing team changes the name of a product and you need to make the change to your eLearning in several instances that have been translated into different languages.
This would generally mean you either go through and change each instance by hand or you write and run a script to make the changes across all the courses. In both cases, you’ll need to republish the courses, retest, and redeploy.
With Elucidat, instead of redoing it all and then re-uploading, you can quickly make the change to the product name at the Course Master level and the changes will be automatically pushed to all the courses that belong with that Master.
What’s more, these changes can be pushed directly to courses on a Learning Management System. This saves you heaps of time because you don’t need to republish or redeploy the courses.
2. Induction training: Fire safety procedures have changed.
Your fire safety procedures change. Only one resource in your eLearning needs updating, but you have to re-do it all!
With Elucidat, you don’t have to redo it all. Since all the project files are kept together in the cloud, you just need to replace the single resource with the change. Provided the file name remains the same, that’s all you have to do!
No need to republish and retest the whole module: the change is automatically pushed out to your Learning Management System.
3. Compliance training: Company policies need to be updated.
Imagine your information-security and fraud-awareness courses for the whole business need to be updated on an annual basis and whenever there is a change in the law or policy.
If you don’t proactively make these changes, you’ll be legally liable and your business will be at risk.
Typically, you’ll need to change the course material and the accompanying assessment. Once this is done, all your staff will need to confirm they have understood the amendments and for auditing purposes, you’ll need to report this in your Learning Management System.
With Elucidat, all of this can be managed simply and quickly in the ways described in scenarios one and two above.
What’s more, using Elucidat’s system of badges, you can attach an achievement badge to the course updates. This is useful so you can track which of your staff members have taken the new course and passed the assessment. When a learner visits a screen or answers a question (or set of questions) correctly, an achievement badge is awarded and the test results tracked in your Learning Management System.
Summary: Cloud Publishing Can Save You Time On eLearning Maintenance
Tools with cloud publishing can save you time and money because they intuitively help you run and maintain eLearning courses more efficiently.
All your files are kept in one place. Your projects are always up to date and available to everyone with a login.
Changes can be made once at the Course Master level and then pushed out to all courses that are built from the Master (including courses with translations).
Changes are automatically pushed out to SCORM courses in your Learning Management System. This saves you the time and cost of having to separately republish, test, and redeploy.
Learn more: Take a tour of Elucidat to see how it can save you time on eLearning maintenance

Formative Assessment In eLearning
The primary purpose of a formative assessment in eLearning is to offer your learners feedback they can use to improve their eLearning experience. Rather than simply giving them a grade, you are able to identify areas that may need improvement and pinpoint their strengths DURING the eLearning course. This constructive criticism and insight can be used to create an action plan moving forward, so that they are able to modify learning behaviors and achieve their learning goals.
In many respects, formative assessment is one of the most beneficial assessment strategies, as it focuses on what still needs to be learned instead of what learners should already have mastered. This gives the learner enough time to improve and acquire the necessary information and skill sets during the eLearning course.
6 Types Of Formative Assessment
Goal checks.
Learners are provided with a goal or objective at the beginning of the eLearning lesson. Upon completion they are given an assessment to determine whether they achieved the goal and how far they’ve progressed. Additional "milestone" goals can also be set for the rest of the lesson or eLearning course.
One-on-one discussion.
The instructor meets with a learner to discuss expectations and assess their current knowledge base and skill sets. Typically, the facilitator will ask each learner a pre-determined set of questions to identify areas of improvement. This can be carried out face-to-face or via an online chat.
Instructor observation.
The instructor observes learners as they are completing online activities and assesses the proficiency and skill level of each individual. This usually involves note-taking, and possibly a follow-up online face-to-face meeting between the instructor and learner.
Personal online learning logs.
Learners are asked to create a personal online learning log or journal that details what they are learning, their thoughts and feelings about the topic, and the core ideas or concepts of the online lesson. The instructor can then use this log to track the learner’s progress.
Group presentations.
Learners work together or independently to create an online presentation that must be presented to their peers. The learners are provided with criteria beforehand, which clarify expectations and specify which skills and information must be used throughout the eLearning project.
Self-assessment.
Learners are encouraged to reflect upon their own eLearning experience and determine their level of proficiency or knowledge mastery. They may also be evaluated by their peers, who give them feedback and insight into their work. This form of online assessment is usually paired with another eLearning activity, such as personal online learning logs.
4 Tips To Use Formative Assessment In eLearning
Provide immediate feedback.
The entire premise behind formative assessment in eLearning is to give your learners the feedback they need to correct unfavorable learning behaviors and strengthen desirable behaviors. To do this, your learners must get the feedback they need immediately after they make an error or carry out the negative behavior, so that they can link the constructive criticism to the eLearning event in question. If you notice that a learner is not fully grasping the concept or is unable to apply the knowledge they have learned, then you should pause, discuss, and offer them the required feedback and guidance as soon as possible.
Student progress dictates the direction of your eLearning course.
One of the most notable benefits of using formative assessment in eLearning is that you can quickly modify your eLearning strategy to meet the individual needs of the learner. If you find that they are struggling with a particular topic or skill, you are able to see this right away thanks to formative assessment. You can then customize the eLearning activities, assessments, and curriculum to improve their comprehension and knowledge absorption. Rather than testing at the end, when it may be too late to modify incorrect learning behaviors, you have the opportunity to remedy the issue DURING the learning process.
Identify measurable strengths and weaknesses.
In order to get the most out of your formative assessment strategy you will need to have quantifiable data that you can actually track. Skills may be difficult to put into numbers and percentages, but you can give your learners online assessments periodically that track their mastery of certain skill sets. Have them complete a specific online scenario at different points throughout the eLearning course and keep track of their progress, or give them a pop quiz that monitors how they are improving. Before you even begin the eLearning course, encourage them to identify their strengths and weaknesses so that you know their learning gaps. Then you can work with them to address their specific needs and pinpoints areas of improvement.
Remember that formative assessments are "low stakes".
The entire point of formative assessment in eLearning is that it is NOT about grades, but about progress. Your learners don’t need to show you that they’ve mastered a subject, but that they are improving as they move through the eLearning course. This is what is known as a "low stakes" assessment, as opposed to "high stakes" summative assessments that typically determine a learner’s proficiency at the end of the eLearning course. A formative assessment in eLearning is designed to monitor a learner’s development and provide them with feedback they can use to achieve their goals. Keep this in mind when you’re creating your online formative assessments, and steer clear of grades or point values that might discourage your learners. Instead, give them constructive criticism and praise that can empower them to become lifelong learners who are willing and ready to strive for success.
Formative assessment in eLearning gives your learners the opportunity to identify areas of improvement and broaden their comprehension while there's still time to make a difference.
Feedback is an integral part of any formative assessment strategy. Read the article 9 Tips To Give And Receive eLearning Feedback to learn 9 top tips that can help you give feedback in a more effective way.

The Importance Of Emotional Learning In Corporate Training
Building on an early career in fast-moving retail operational management, I first became passionate about unlocking the potential in people and all things related to learning and development in the late 1980’s. I firmly believe that to be truly effective and sustainable, the learning environment must be creative, focused, fun and engaging, and above all, practical.
Many business management theories and models may offer us great insights, however the vital tipping point for everyone is "How can I use it?" or "How does this solve that problem?". And without the answers, little of any real value will be taken away from pretty much any training session.
Since forming Creativedge Training in 2001, I have continued to uphold my belief in making learning more accessible, keep things simple (less is so often more) and offer people flexibility and choice in how they learn and the environments in which they learn. It was out of the "less is more; take the best, leave the rest" principle that the Creativedge 90 Minute "Bite-Sized" Training method was first created over 14 years ago. Why did I choose this particular approach to delivering training? I was compelled by it because the intensive, focused sessions take full advantage of our optimum period of concentration, allowing information to not only be rapidly absorbed, but more importantly, to stick! How so? Let me explain.
Brain-based reports by the Neuro Leadership Institute give a scientific, quantifiable perspective on how people think, develop, and perform when they learn. They also give tremendous scientific insight on the value played by emotions when we learn, and as such how emotions should be taken into account in the learning environment. And by a learning "environment" I mean the method(s) used to deliver learning, be that classroom style or virtual training, both of which I shall refer to below.
Part Played By Emotion
The compelling 2014 NeuroLeadership report, which updates the 2010 AGES model report, hones in on the emotional aspect of the learning experience and how moderate levels of positive emotional arousal can actually enhance memory retention and enable greater social collaboration, which in turn aids learning. The 2014 report refers to "the executive flown in for the 9-5 learning event" who may feel frustration and irritation at being away from emails, the office etc., and ultimately feels pulled in so many directions. This type of emotion can distract from the positive impact of learning. The Creativedge bite-size classroom sessions were designed more than 14 years ago to accommodate these exact same circumstances. As such, they were specifically designed to be interactive, fast-moving, and engaging in order that participants would retain and immediately apply all information learned during the session afterwards and in the future. A key value of our training method is the ability to deliver a high impact program in a condensed 90 minute time frame, thereby ensuring people can quickly return to "their day job".
One of the other interesting points highlighted in the same article is the part played by "spacing", i.e. having space between learning and review sessions. Our classroom sessions allow and encourage participants to revisit our programs in the future and at their leisure.
The exact same principles also apply to a successful virtual training environment.
In order for virtual training to work successfully, it is key for participants to have meaningful, interactive, fast-moving sessions that also provide a chance to network and engage with other participants. When various multimedia elements like video and audio clips, infographics and animations, mini-games, fun and relevant polling questions are all added into the mix, then participants are able to enjoy an engaging and exciting learning environment that in so doing also helps to extend their capacity to improve performance and thinking. This can be evidenced when we evaluate our clients after the work we do with them.
With many years’ experience working with many different companies, I have seen at first hand people’s emotional responses to what they are learning. When emotional learning is ignored, that is if the information they perceive in the learning environment fails to elicit response, it will fail to be perceived as meaningful and will therefore have little chance of being selected into long-term memory banks and be recalled and used in the future.

Utilizing eLearning In Developing Countries
In recent years, eLearning has been all the rage in western countries such as America, Great Britain, and Canada. It allows working professionals to earn degrees, study on their own schedule, and not have to commute to a far-flung campus for classes or advisory meetings. But now, even relatively undeveloped nations are reaping the benefits of eLearning, and utilizing eLearning in developing countries is becoming increasingly important. Here, we’ll detail some of the reasons eLearning is benefiting these countries, and why we should ensure it continues to do so.
Why eLearning?
One of the main reasons there are so many benefits in utilizing eLearning in developing countries is that it cuts down on much of the infrastructural costs that deter many students. For instance:
Cutting out expenses such as classroom space and textbook rental/purchase makes educational much more affordable to people living in developing countries.
The use of eLearning also helps eliminate logistical issues that can occur in these countries, such as poor public transport or a lack of suitable roads entirely.
Students can fit in coursework and lectures around their own schedules and work hours, and therefore are not wasting valuable time traveling to and from university, or risking their job and livelihood in order to attend classes.
Online education and eLearning not only benefit students, but a country’s economy as a whole. Some of these benefits include:
Having a more educated workforce improves a nation’s economy, and also creates a competitive market for foreign investors.
Although there is still a cost involved in establishing eLearning capabilities in a developing country, it is not nearly as high as building traditional learning facilities, and often foreign aid from UNESCO and other international NGOs are available to support countries through this process.
Case Study: Africa
Africa is at the head of the eLearning trend and is showing tremendous leaps in this field. As a whole, the continent is forecasted to have a 15% annual growth rate for the next 4 years. Individual countries, such as Senegal and Zambia, are at the forefront of this growth and expansion: both countries are expected to grow up to 30% in the reach and deployment of eLearning technology.
In Somalia, students at the University of Hargeisa can participate in classes at Indiana University through the use of special classrooms and technology provided by the African Virtual University, which has 29 distance learning centers to connect African students with universities around the world. Skype and WhatsApp connect professors and students, and AVU is even working on making lectures available via mobile phones. This kind of development in education and eLearning is welcome news to a region with the lowest university attendance in the world: in sub-Saharan Africa only 6% of school-leavers attend university (as opposed to the worldwide average of 26%).
Although there are still some concerns over course completion, as many students do not complete individual modules, let alone entire courses, experts are working to alleviate this concern through finding a balance between online learning and in-person instruction and accountability.
Case Study: India
Within ever-increasing government support for eLearning, India is fast becoming one of the world’s leaders in this educational arena. Currently estimated at $20 billion, India’s online education market size is set to increase to $40 billion by 2017. Some of the reasons for this exponential growth include:
The existing school system: India currently contains over 1 million schools and 18,000 higher education institutions, all of which could benefit from eLearning resources.
India’s demographics: over 1.2 billion people live in India, and nearly half fall into the target market for education, eLearning, and other online educational resources.
In a country in which roads, transport systems, and wealth vary dramatically by region, eLearning offers a level playing field for all students. Learners in the poorest villages can take advantage of the same educational resources as learners in the most cosmopolitan cities, all thanks to online classes offered at affordable prices.
Case Study: Latin America
Unfortunately, Latin America is often most known for its drug trade and for being one of the most violent and volatile regions in the world. But eLearning is helping to change all of that through the implementation of online education programs in prisons. Here’s a breakdown of Latin America’s prison problem:
Currently, 1.3 million of the world’s 10 million prisoners belong to Latin America. This equates to 229 prisoners per every 100,000 people in the region (the world average is 144 per 100,000).
Over the past 20 years, incarceration rates have increased by 120% due to the drug wars during this period, leaving the government with the problem of how to reintegrate this increased number of prisoners into society upon their release.
The answer to these issues? Online education. Research has shown that the use of online educational suites that emphasize vocational and technical training have led to a 43% lower chance that inmates return to prison. Inmates in countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina who participated in these programs were also 13% more likely to find a job upon release, another critical factor in successful reintegration into society. Keeping prisoners from reoffending also saves these countries significant amounts of money: indeed, for every $1 spent on online education, the state saves $4-5 as a result.
Some Final Reflections
As demonstrated, several developing countries around the world are benefiting from the use of eLearning and online education while the rates and the quality of traditional education processes constantly drops down. Not only does eLearning benefit the students, who learn important skills and increase their career potential, but it also helps countries to save money, attract foreign investment, and sustain a healthy economy.
