I am always kind of leery of these types of surveys: Do they actually measure what is happening? Who were the respondents? Was it made FOR the company, or was it made WITH the company? I any case, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt recently released a survey of 1000+ educators on their current confidence, especially about Ed tech. Here are some of the findings: Almost all educators surveyed (97%) use some form of digital content, with over 50% using apps/websites/digital games in classrooms; 58% of educators are either "very" or "somewhat" concerned about student data privacy; Teachers and administrators have differing perceptions on key issues, including online assessment and adaptive learning activities in classrooms; Only 41% of teachers feel positive about the teaching profession, while 23% of teachers with less than 10 years of experience plan to leave the field in the next five years. What College Students Drink While Studying Infographic The What College Students Drink While Studying Infographic shows what college student prefer to drink when they are preparing for finals. In particular, in a study by TextbookRush.com of over 2000 college students, water was selected as the drink of choice by 26.0% of all students studying for finals, followed by coffee at 24.3% and pop/soda at 11.6%. At the other end of the spectrum, milk came in dead last for both genders at 1.5% for each. There were some significant differences between females and males responding to the survey. Water and coffee were the top two options selected by both genders. However, tea was #3 for females, favored by 12.7% compared to males at 8.2%. Pop/soda was #3 for males with 9.9%. Alcoholic beverages stood out in the survey results comprising 10.6% of all responses. Liquor: 4.2%, Beer: 3.4%, Wine: 3.0%. Alcoholic drinks were chosen by males at more than 2 to 1 ratio to females: 17.8% vs. 7.9%. However, among alcoholic drinks, wine was favored by females 3.7% compared to males at 1.5%.The results on energy drinks were perhaps surprising with only 5.9% of all students choosing that category. Kasey Marquardt, a certified Health and Fitness Specialist through the University of South Florida, says "Water is always the best option. Not only does it keep your body and brain hydrated, which promotes more effective studying and brain function, but it will help keep fatigue levels low which can improve effective studying time. Coffee and tea may be slightly dehydrating. The caffeine will give you a small boost of energy but may make you crash later; effective studying will be nearly impossible when you feel the crash". The sustained, managed and strategic nature of our activities means the resulting impacts far outweigh the initial investment. As Quincy Jones once remarked, "I’ve always thought that a big laugh is a really loud noise from the soul saying, "Ain’t that the truth." That said, Edu-fun Friday is a series devoted to adding some humor to the lives of teachers who visit this blog. After all, there’s nothing better than ending the week on a positive note! Plus, do we have the best topics to provide us with some comic relief or what? I don’t know about you, but during my first week back in the jungle, I’ve seen more hashtag responses to questions than ever before! I have to admit they’ve been pretty #creative and #hilarious. I guess it’s a just a #realitycheck that #digitalnativesruletheworld. Here’s to a most excellent year! You have the power to make it the best one ever—for you and your students—so let the good times roll! #inspire #motivate #succeed
