While at BbWorld 2014, I have the privilege of accepting a Blackboard Catalyst Exemplary Course Award for my Blackboard course, ETT 510: Instructional Media and Technology, which I designed and taught online during Fall 2013. This course was reviewed by the Blackboard Exemplary Course Program and received the distinction of being named an Exemplary Course. While I’ve previously shared feedback from reviewers, course tour highlighting notable elements of the course design, and even made the entire course available to self-enroll and/or download as OER package, I thought I’d also share below the other kind "kudos" I’ve received related to this award thus far…photos from the awards presentation to be added later. Congrats to @jrhode for winning the 2014 Blackboard Catalyst Award for Exemplary Course Design! http://t.co/e01znrhsvj — NIU Education (@NIUCOE) July 14, 2014 The following announcement was sent by La Vonne Neal, Dean, NIU College of Education, on Monday, 7/14/14 in her "Monday Memo" to NIU Education faculty and staff: This week I am proud to announce that Dr. Jason Rhode, an instructor in the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment (ETRA) and director of NIU’s Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center, has won the 2014 Blackboard Catalyst Award for Exemplary Course Design. "ETT 510 Instructional Media and Technology," a required course for all ETRA master’s degree students in technology specialist online cohorts, is the course receiving this honor. Last year, Rhode collaborated with ETRA faculty and staff to improve the course content and template of the ETT 510 class. They were so successful that the template has become the standard for all online ETRA cohorts. The Blackboard award program is designed to enhance the visibility of the innovation occurring in institutions of higher learning and to recognize faculty and staff who are directly impacting educational programs. In 2014, over 200 entries were evaluated in a rigorous peer-review process by more than 300 faculty and instructional designers. NIU is among a distinguished group of winners in the Blackboard community. Blackboard will be celebrating the ingenuity of ETRA’s collaboration and course design on July 17, 2014, at an award ceremony in Las Vegas. It is clear to me that COE faculty and staff are leading the way in creating cutting-edge instructional technology, which ultimately furthers our scholars’ academic and career success. I am so honored to be a part of an institution with leaders like Jason Rhode who continuously demonstrate excellence in online teaching and learning. Dr. Rhode received the Blackboard Key to the Community Award in 2013. His staff at NIU’s Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center also won the 2013 Blackboard Staff Development Catalyst Award, 2013 Blackboard Teaching and Learning Catalyst Award, 2012 Blackboard Catalyst Platinum Award for Community Collaboration, and the 2011 Blackboard Catalyst Award for Excellence in Online Professional Development. Congratulations to Dr. Rhode and all ETRA faculty and staff members who collaboratively enhance our scholars’ experiences in online learning. La Vonne I. Effective design in eLearning courses makes courses look professional, supports the learning process, and increases course production efficiency. At the 2015 Lectora® User Conference, Johnny Hamilton from Providence Health and Services spoke about this and shared tips—or design guidelines—for effective instructional design. Here are a few of the tips that Johnny shared for emphasizing the design in instructional design: • Display less than 120 words at once to focus on important content, reduce clutter on the page, and enhance readability and comprehension. • Chunk content to increase comprehension. • Size fonts for readability. John suggested body text font size of 12-14; you should double that font size for section headers. • Incorporate white space to make content stand out and be easier to comprehend. • Design from top left to bottom right to follow learners’ reading path. • Limit your color pallet for a professional look. Higher contrast also improves readability. • Indicate meanings for color; for example, use the same color for elements such as responsive, navigation, or focus. • Be consistent in your design to give the course a unified look. That way, learners can focus on the content. To demonstrate all his tips and design guidelines, Johnny built an interactive course in Lectora! Presenter: Paul Beaudoin, Online Learning Specialist, Fitchburg State University Date/Time: Tue, July 15, 2014, 1:45 PM - 2:30 PM Location: Murano 3304 Description: It doesn’t take long to discover that teaching in the blended or online learning environment is not a direct transfer of the traditional face-to-face class. The challenges of online learning often require a different set of skills and there is no single sure-shot way of solving those challenges. In this presentation, Exemplary Course award winner Dr. Paul Beaudoin shares five key class room tested strategies. Whether you are looking to flip your classroom or are ready to launch your MOOC, these five tips will improve your teaching efficacy and enhance the classroom experience for your learners. 5 Key Classroom Tested Strategies 1. Maximize Your Digital Savy Know your LMS - find out what is in your Blackboard platform. Your institution may have other products like Respondus LockDown Browser or TurnItIn Know what your text editor can do - Inserting links, images, tables, etc. into your content you add Going outside the LMS - examples: Timetoast, Voki, Jing, Go2Web20.net 2. Be an Active and Engaged Participant Use learner’s name in your text responses to students Use discussions and group wiki activities to Check learners’ activity in content areas in Blackboard 3. Reinvent Your Wheel Try using Wordle for students to help focus vocabulary building in your class Try role-playing online Try using Toondoo to creating visual story on concepts Try using Twitter 4. Include Your Learners in the Process Have learners make a commitments to themselves and the course. Paul recommends having students post their commitment publicly to a discussion board. Have learners create study material to share with each other. Example: study blue.com Survey students during the course to gain information on how you can improve the course, during the course 5. Reassess Assessment Low stakes activities are great for building learner confidence (example: jigsaw puzzle) Add images and audio to assessment questions Consider mind mapping tools like mind-mup Have learners create info graphics using tools like Glogster Allow learners to create a digital story as an alternative to traditional paper Remember - it’s ok to fail! Failure is an integral part of success. More resources from Paul available here.

What were you doing five, ten, or sixty minutes ago?  There’s a good possibility that you got a notification on your phone, accessed it on your computer, or used an app on your tablet. The average American checks their Facebook account 14 times per day*, every second 6,000 tweets are sent**, and an average of 70 million photos are posted onto Instagram daily***. Social media is here, and it’s time to use it to your advantage. If you feel that incorporating social media could boost communication, collaboration, and create a community, then you’re interested for the right reasons. The first step of adding social media to your learning campaigns is management approval. Social media comes with IT concerns, possible branding restraints, and man hours not only to build up the platform but to monitor and improve on the process. Once management is on board, the next step is to determine what platform matches your needs. Each comes with its own aspects to consider. So, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of using Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram: Facebook Pros Cons Easily accessible Content can get lost Private groups Easily distracted Peer-to-peer Detracts from human interest Possible reach Cyber bullying Bit-sized posts Spam Polls Analytics Free Twitter Pros Cons Quick Hard to follow Easy to setup Public Accessible 140 character limit Hard to moderate Easily distracted Detracts from human interest Cyber bullying Spam Instagram Pros Cons Multiple types of content No groups Easy Public Hashtags Easily distracted Detracts from human interest Cyber bullying Spam Once you’ve determined the platform to use, the next step is incorporating it in a creative way. Let’s take a look at some possible scenarios and how to develop them into your course. You’ve decided to start a Facebook group where you can capture the peer-to-peer interaction for a company. The group will post questions weekly that pertain to their particular topic, and any new users are required to introduce themselves and comment on one question. Your company has started a health initiative. Part of the training is to post a tweet using the Hashtag GetHealthywithXYZ that shows one of the ways you’re getting healthy. It’s homework time for your online students. You’re currently teaching about the rule of thirds and want to test the user’s knowledge. As a homework assignment, the students are required to post a photo to an account. The following week, the class will review the accuracy of the principle by peer critiquing their work. To promote a professional environment, consider providing employees and students with the following guidelines: • Offer supplemental instructions on how to create an account • Always prompt users to introduce themselves when possible • Keep comments and contributions professional; supply examples when relevant • Promote proper grammar and full sentences • Deter cyber bullying • Promote sharing, following, liking, and other positive opportunities within the platforms • Offer the opportunity to opt out Visit the Trivantis Community to view the social media example course I created to go along with this blog. Problem: You have classroom training that you’ve been asked to turn into an online course—and make it just as engaging as that face-to-face training. Solution: The benefit of eLearning is that you can create interactive online training that’s MORE engaging than that outdated, boring classroom course. eLearning allows you to add interactions like quizzes and games, plus videos and images that support your training. Mikki Teneyuca, from Tasbo, shared great tips for how to create an engaging online course in her session at the 2015 Lectora® User Conference, "Rocking Your Face-to-Face Content in an Online Format." Here are a few of her suggestions for developers who’ve been given this task: • Follow up with your training instructions to make sure the interactions and quizzes you created are working. • Support images with text. • Make videos between 1 and 3 minutes long. • When outsourcing, make sure you get quotes, understand what hours mean to them, and know what they are billing you. • Create a blueprint for your courses with your SME. Make sure you plan your questions before meeting with your SME so that you don’t overwhelm him or her. • Take advantage of the awesome eLearning Brothers assets! • Connect with other developers in an eLearning community. As mLearning gets more and more popular, businesses are looking to ensure that they’re not just creating mLearning…they’re creating GREAT mLearning. Colleen Liley of Alaska Air joined us at the 2015 Lectora® User Conference to share some of her tips on creating a better a mobile learning experience. Colleen explained why she enjoys working with Lectora, saying the "best thing about Lectora is that it generates consistent code. With consistent code, we can hook into it." It’s easy to tweak Lectora’s code and add your own custom code because Lectora generates a reliable div structure for all light box windows with consistent class names. So, you can alter the appearance of these divs with your own CSS (cascading style sheets). Colleen showed attendees how to add "image zoom" code with Lectora HTML extension so that users on a tablet can pinch to zoom in on images in their training course. In the pilot training example below, the pilot could pinch to zoom in on the air approach diagram. Here are two of the tips she shared about adding zoom functionality: 1. Make sure the image you insert is a little bigger than the space you’re putting it into so that when you pinch and zoom, the image doesn’t get pixelated. 2. Don’t let Lectora compress images when you export. Colleen shared several other fantastic examples of adding HTML code to take a mobile course further with Lectora. Hopefully this one inspires you to try out your own HTML extensions! Subscribe to the Everything eLearning Blog for more LUC recaps, helpful tips, and free resources. At this year’s Lectora® User Conference in Nashville, Marlon Oneid (YouAchieve) and Richard Sikes (Text&Form) talked about using multimedia localization to address the global world that we live in. Take a look at a few highlights from this awesome breakout session: Multimedia localization is the adaption of digital multimedia content, such as image films, product videos, or eLearning content, to the needs and requirements of different target cultures and markets. Improving access to information not only equips employees with the skills they need to achieve personal goals, but it also fosters an open global culture with a shared sense of purpose. Marlon and Richard explained that 80% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the United States, and YouTube itself is localized for 61 countries and across 61 languages. Multilingual multimedia localization operates in four different dimensions: 1. Assets 2. Quality 3. Time and space 4. Cultural considerations For example, here’s a cultural consideration you might not have realized. In some cultures, a female’s voice would not be the best choice, which means that localizing eLearning would need to include adapting video voiceover to be a male voice. Last month, we decided to switch up our Inspiration Wednesday webinars a bit and show you how to make the most of CourseMill®, the learning management system from Trivantis. Lectora® authoring tool and CourseMill are pretty much a match made in heaven, and we recently added on a feature called CourseMill Advanced Reports that lets you make the most of the data from your courses. For this webinar, John Laws, Director of Learning Management Systems at Trivantis, showed how to access reports from the perspective of a manager, or "reporter" in CourseMill. Most managers are used to getting reports emailed to them from their company’s learning management system. But with CourseMill Advanced Reports, managers can now create live links, straight from their desktops, to all their reports and dashboards. This is done with Live Excel, a real-time interactive reporting feature. You can create shortcut icons on your desktop to this report; all you need is an internet connection, and you can get straight to your data with one click! John likes to keep things organized in folders on his desktop, and here he shows you all the reports and Live Excel shortcuts he has in his "CourseMill Reports" folder on his desktop: You can also export this data in a variety of file types to share with other members on your team. The ability to create live desktop shortcuts to your reporting dashboard allows reporters to access the information they want without having to log into CourseMill, making it much easier to quickly get information. Here are two examples of the dashboards and reports that you can access straight from your desktop: Did I mention how easy it is to customize your reports and charts with drag and drop functionality? It just gets better and better! John and Debbie Giffin, another CourseMill mastermind at Trivantis, showed many other reporting tips and tricks in the webinar "Custom Reports Made Easy." Watch it on the Trivantis Community now! Subscribe to the Everything eLearning Blog for more Lectora and CourseMill how-tos, free eLearning resources, and all the latest product updates.
