One of the exciting things about podcasting live from ISTE is that you get to actually see and use the neat learning tools your guests are talking about.  I was instantly charmed by Dash and Dot, the cute blue robots from Wonderworkshop.  I was lucky June came along with them because after saying hello the robot just glanced around awkwardly.  Before this conversation I had almost no idea what you could teach with robots and I was amazed at all the great ideas June shared with me about using these really engaging robots to support computer science learning in the youngest grades.  Check out this great conversation and share your Ideas about what you could do with robots in your classroom. About WonderWorkshop Website: http://www.MakeWonder.com Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/WonderWorkshop Wonder Workshop launched Dash & Dot in December 2014 and within its first month, delivered more than $3.5M in robots to 37 countries including the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, European countries, India, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong. Based in San Mateo, CA, Wonder Workshop was founded in 2012 by Vikas Gupta, Saurabh Gupta and Mikal Greaves, inventors, designers, programmers and parents with the mission to make coding a new creative tool that is accessible for children from age five and beyond. The company has currently raised $15.9 million in funding from Madrona Venture Group, CRV, WI Harper, Google Ventures, Bright Success Capital, Maven Ventures, Vikas Gupta, Reza Hussein and Jeff Schox. About Impero With today’s students using Chromebooks, Smartphones, laptops, tablets and, even desktop computers, the newest version of Impero Software will provide a solution for managing all of those devices in the classroom. This new software will allow teachers to broadcast and share screens, instant message students, monitor/block usage, remotely control computers and more. Having the ability to monitor students rather than just block usage of certain websites and apps allows the student to learn accountability and self-control online, which are skills that will be carried on in the future in their workplaces. Over the last few months, I have had the privilege of getting to know the new Chair-Elect of the ISTE Board of Directors, Matt Harris.  Matt is a very hard working educator who primarily lives in Singapore. This year at ISTE Matt sat down with me to talk about the inner workings of the ISTE conference.  What make it run so smoothly? How many hours does it take to set up a mega-conference? How far in advance does planning happen to make sure that 22,000 educators and venders have a successful and safe event.  If you have ever wondered how ISTE is able to put together an AWESOME experience year after year… check out our interview above. About Matt Harris, Ed.D. Welcome! My name is Matt Harris, Ed.D. and I am international educator living in Asia with deep passion and vast experience around Educational Technology. In my career, I have worked as an educational leader, teacher, instructional technologist, author, presenter and researcher for nearly 15 years. I have taught at all grade levels from preschool to university graduate school as an ICT and mathematics teacher. I have worked as a senior administrator at independent schools and universities in North America and Asia. Please check out my LinkedIn profile for more details. Additionally, I work as an educational consultant for schools and Ministries of Education in the Middle East, Africa, North America, Australia, and Asia. I also dabble in a bit of data systems design for school and career/professional counseling for educational technology professionals I am a frequent conference speaker and author focusing on educational topics from educational technology integration and information literacy to professional development and change management. I (attempt to) curate and add to the body of educational technology materials that help teachers use tools for enhanced teaching and learning (please follow me on Twitter or check out my EdTech Vlog on YouTube). My research interests lie in the design and implementation of staff development, educational leadership, and instructional programs that focus on improving student learning through resource allocation and usage. For the last few months, I have been asked by several teachers one common question: "How Do I Survive ISTE?"  My advice for these teachers has always been the same.  Spend less time at sessions and more time meeting people.  The art of networking is one of the best skills that can’t possibly be over utilized when attending a MEGA-Conference.  Attending ISTE is all about meeting new people and learning about their innovative ideas. One of these innovative ideas that I learned about came from Mitch Weisburgh and Larry Cocco who are not only great educators to follow, but the co-creators of a brand new learning network called Games4Ed. About Our Guests Mitch Weisburgh Co-founder of Games4Ed. Co-founder of Edchat Interactive. Director of Youth Rights Media. Managing Partner, Academic Business Advisors. Registered Volunteer, AFS Intercultural Exchanges. Larry Cocco Co-founder of Games4Ed. Board of Directors, State Educational Technology Directors Association, and received the 2014 State Leader of the Year award.  Educational Services Advisory Committee, Thirteen/WNET.  Guild Officer, Gamers Advancing Meaningful Education (G. A. M. E.). Member of the Inevitable Betrayal educators guild in World of Warcraft. Of all the technology demonstrations at ISTE this year, the one that I was looking the most forward to was Windows 10.  Launching on July 29, 2015, Windows 10 is a complete relaunching of the most popular operating system in the world.  In this interview, I had the privilege of getting a sneak peak into the future of both tablet and desktop computing. Learn More About Windows10 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows https://twitter.com/windows New Features Found in Windows 10 Free Upgrade Brand New Web Browser: Microsoft Edge Cortana Windows App Store About Our Guests Craig Ashley Craig Ashley is a Senior Product Manager responsible for product management of Windows for Education. His past areas of product responsibility include Windows To Go, DirectAccess, VPN, BranchCache, and wireless connectivity. In addition to his direct product roles, Craig focuses on education product strategy, value proposition, technical marketing and messaging across the Windows feature set. Prior to his current role at Microsoft, Craig led product teams at AT&T, Global Crossing, and SAVVIS focused on security, cloud services, and network infrastructure. While a huge fan of product management, some of his best years as a professional were spent as a 5th grade teacher in the New Jersey public school system.    He taught all subjects, but reading instruction and integrating technology into the classroom hold special places in his heart.  His time in the classroom continues to directly impact his work in technology at Microsoft. Craig earned his B.S. from Bradley University and his MBA from the University of Illinois. Since moving to the Pacific Northwest, Craig has become an avid hiker, enjoying the great outdoor activities in and around the Redmond area. Helen Gooch Being in the classroom for 21 years allowed Helen to watch technology become an integral part of the way educators must do business.  Observing the engagement of students as new tools, devices, and programs were infused into the curriculum kept her on her toes and always ready to learn what technology would be a "best fit" for a particular area of study.  That led to Helen becoming the Instructional Technology Coordinator in Clarksville-Montgomery County, TN for the past 13 years.  This role allowed her to impact over 3,200 teachers and over 31,000 students by helping them prepare for lifelong learning; as well as, becoming our future workforce.  Helen’s team of Technology Integration Coaches provided professional development experiences while promoting best practices when integrating technology into education.  Currently, Helen is a Program Director with the Northwest Council of Computing in Education working with another talented team as NCCE delivers professional learning across the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands.    The Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) Program has reinforced Helen’s belief that all students must learn to use technology effectively as they prepare for their future.  The program has given her an even richer set of tools from Microsoft than ever before, and those tools just keep expanding.  It is not uncommon for an educator to comment that the MIE training has changed their lives both professionally and personally.  She has even had teachers in training go out and purchase a new computer between Day 1 and 2 and return with all the free tools downloaded and ready to explore.  With the addition of Office 365 in Education educators and students can truly communicate and collaborate as they problem solve and meet academic learning challenges.  This along with all the resources provided in the Partners in Learning Network gives every educator the opportunity to empower their students to reach their potential. This year at ISTE I had the privilege of sitting down with members of the Microsoft Surface team to learn why the new Surface 3 is the best Laptop/Tablet solution on the market.  Personally, I have had a Surface for the last few months, and I have found that it is a great machine for those looking to have a computer on the go, and also a trustworthy machine to sit down and record my podcasts with. The power of the surface lies in it’s versatility.  The Surface tablet lies somewhere in-between your iPad and your Laptop.  But instead of being hunkered down with hard drive heavy apps, you have the ability to not only use, but combine both rich desktop applications with lightweight web apps.  This not only provides the best of both worlds, but allows you to create dynamic lessons for your students that can be accessed across multiple devices in multiple locations. Through out the last 6 months, I have had the privilege of working closely with Microsoft Education to create some pretty awesome podcasts and promotional videos.  During this time, I met some pretty awesome educators who are creating the building blocks for what education might look like for future generations.  One of my favorite moments at ISTE 2015 came while interviewing the OneNote team and I had the opportunity to meet the guys who actually CREATE Microsoft OneNote. I once heard someone say "In order to be the man… you have to beat the man" and this philosophy is true for Microsoft OneNote.  "In order to create AWESOME… you have to BE AWESOME!  Since January, I have worked very closely with Mike Tholfsen and Ari Schor on several podcasts and even the beginning of what will be a TeacherCast University Online Course on OneNote.  They are awesome guys and if you ever have an opportunity to visit a Microsoft Education booth, they can be easily found by their trademark Purple Capes.  I hope you have the opportunity to check out our video above to see exactly how awesome these capes really are. This year at ISTE 2015, I had the pleasure of sitting down with members of the Minecraft EDU team to learn how students are turning digital building blocks into customizable digital learning spaces. What is MineCraft EDU? "MinecraftEdu provides products and services that make it easy for educators to use Minecraft in the classroom. We make a special version of Minecraft specifically for classroom use. It contains many additions to the original game that make it more useful and appropriate in a school setting. We also offer a cloud-based solution for hosting Minecraft classroom servers so students and teachers can connect and play together. We also host a library of lessons and activities that are available for free, and there is a vibrant, active teacher community exploring uses of Minecraft in the classroom. Over 5,500 teachers in 40+ countries have used MinecraftEdu to teach subjects from STEM to Language to History to Art." What is the best application for broadcasting news and information to my school district and community? As technology gets smaller and less expensive and the ability to use personal devices in the classrooms become more popular among schools, I have noticed a rise in school districts interested in starting their own public relations teams.  There are several great ways to create videos and post them on sites such as YouTube, MediaCore, Vimeo and now even Facebook, but the ability to create compelling educational programming that can be pushed out to the community in real time has never been easier. When I first started broadcasting and working with live video, the way I did it (and still suggest to others) is to take an iPad or Webcam and sign up for a free uStream account.  It’s simple, and if you don’t mind the fact that every 10-15 minutes your viewers receive a commercial break from their live programming, it’s a free alternative to what is a pretty expensive paid version. About two and a half years ago, I learned about a broadcasting application that not only streams live video to any number of CDN’s (Content Delivery Networks) but does so at a very high quality.  It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to one of my best friends in the podcasting world…. Telestream Wirecast. Overnight, thanks to Telestream Wirecast, the TeacherCast Podcast transformed into the TeacherCast Educational Broadcasting Network. I found myself able to create live broadcasts quickly, and then by performing simple edits have my content up on TeacherCast at lightning speed. What Are WireCast Alternatives?  What are the other alternatives to a broadcasting switcher application?  In the world of internet broadcasting, there are two big players. The first is Telestream Wirecast. An affordable (we will get to this part below) software based application that can be installed across both Mac and Windows platforms and easily deployed with little setup to create amazing content.  The other way of doing live shows is to purchase a Tricaster.  This hardware based solution starts at $5,000 and THEN you add the additional components.  Where some may suggest using this because it’s what is used in the "real world" it’s far beyond most school district budgets. What About Google Hangouts? For most of you, the concept of a Google Hangout on Air comes to mind when you are thinking about FREE live broadcasting.  True, the GHO is a great vessel for creating a basic broadcast and sharing it with the world.  True, the GHO does have features that allow you to do screen sharing and lower thirds.  True, the GHO allows you to add external cameras and microphones. I’m not suggesting for one moment that there is no value in GHO.  What I would like to have you consider for a moment are 10 reasons why your school might be interested in trying out Wirecast, a pretty amazing broadcasting platform.   What Makes WireCast Awesome? Cost … Cost … Cost There are three versions of Wirecast on the market that fit any school districts budget. If you are interested in trying WireCast, you can do one of two things.  First, you can check out a FREE demo version of WireCast and play with all of the bells and whistles that the pro version (Win / Mac)has to offer.  It’s pretty awesome. The second way that you can check out Wirecast for free is by using YouTube LIVE. An alternative to Google Hangouts on Air, YouTube LIVE allows you the ability to download a free (stripped down) version of what is essentially Wirecast and learn how to work the basics of a broadcasting switcher. For those who are looking to take things to the level, WireCast Studio (Win / Mac)offers the best value for any district looking to create custom branded video programs. We will get into the many reasons why this is awesome below. @Wirecast is the perfect video solution for any school looking to take video to the level.Click To Tweet Send Your Students Anywhere Using Mobile Phones and Tablets One of the best features of Wirecast is the ability to connect with IP cameras.  If you have a wireless camera at your disposal you can connect the IP address to Wirecast and it will record without the need for any messy wires.  What does this also mean? That means that students with access to iPods, iPhones, and iPads can download the FREE Wirecast app and, as long as they are on the same WIFI network broadcast live from ANYWHERE on your campus.  Imagine sending 10 students to the basketball game with a few walkie talkies.  Wirecast gives you the ability to remotely record each of those cameras onto separate channels.  If you are willing to go the extra mile, you can even setup your broadcasting canvas to include multiple video feeds at the same time.  Pretty Cool! Create Fully Produced LIVE Shows As stated above, Google Hangouts do allow you to switch between "talking heads" and screenshots… but we all know how much time that takes and how difficult it can be. It doesn’t do anyone any good when putting n a live show.  Wirecast allows you to do live compositing using multiple layers of video (think Photoshop for Video).  You can add titles, lower thirds and even setup Picture in a Picture to create uniquely branded visual experience. Social Media Integration Have you ever wanted to do a live show and bring in your audience for an interactive presentation?  Through Wirecast, you can display tweets from a given hashtag or user name.  These tweets can be auto updated at a given interval to constantly provide live updates during your show. Through @Wirecast, you can display tweets from a given hashtag or user name!Click To Tweet GREEN SCREENS!!! One of the biggest advantages that Wirecast brings you is it’s ability to do LIVE Chroma keying.  This means you can have fun pretending to be your schools weather person or to create "remote broadcasts" all from your classroom.  Do you have another class with a green screen? Wirecast is powerful enough to merge two green screen effects together to make it seem like two people are in the same room at the same desk, when they are miles away from each other. Green Screens are great for news desks, puppet shows, mystery Skype and much more! Learn More about Green Screens on this episode of the TechEducator Podcast. Instant Replay Are you interested in capturing LIVE Sports and broadcasting to your community?  Wirecast Pro comes with a powerful Instant Replay feature that allows you to go back in time and showcase live video to your users! ScoreBoards For those who really want to create a pretty amazing sporting experience, Wirecast Pro provides the ability to do live scoreboards.  These customizable graphics allow you to broadcast your games and instantly keep your audience updated with what is going on in the game. LIVE Streaming to Multiple Sources Thanks to the power of Wirecast, your live broadcasts can be exported to several great CDN’s such as YouTube, Twitch, UStream, Wowza, Microsoft Azure and many more. Playlists When I first started broadcasting the TechEducator Podcast, I started each show by playing 3 intro videos.  This was a very difficult process that involved timing each video’s beginning with the ending of the previous movie.  Wriest now supports the creation of Playlists.  Today when I broadcast, I have all of my intro videos in a playlist and Wirecast not only streams them flawlessly, but tells me exactly how much time is left on the overall video feed so I am ready to go when the camera hits the live feed. 64-Bit / Retina Display Support One of the best features of Wirecast is it’s ability to run on almost any machine.  I have used it (minimally) on my Macbook Air and in a pinch, it does a fine job.  Where Wirecast really shines is when you can take advantage of it’s native 64-bit architecture to produce high resolution, high quality broadcasts that now support full 2880×1800 Retina Display Support. What are you waiting for? So… If you think your school can survive using Google Hangouts, I suggest you to consider looking into Telestream Wirecast.  An affordable way to create a branded digital environment where you can share your school district with your local community and beyond. Jeff sits down with the creators of a great musical app called iCanConduct to learn how it can be used, not only in elementary music classes, but also in upper advanced music classes to teach pulse, rhythm, and beat patterns to your inspiring musicians.   About Beans In My Ears BeansInMyEars was founded by a team of software developers, teachers, professional musicians, and parents with over 35 years of combined experience. We feel that the proliferation of iPhone, Android and other mobile devices provides a unique opportunity to create fun, exciting, and educational applications that do more than occupy your child’s time.
