With so many options for programming and coding on tablets, I am in a constant cycle of learning, evaluating, and deciding how I will use an app in class. This is not only a challenge of finding the time to learn; it also is a challenge to organize the information so I can remember it when I need it. Beyond this, I want to find ways to easily share this information and my process.
I enjoy a good flowchart, especially the ones in Wired. There is something to be said about logic and poetry and flowcharts, but I haven’t figured out what it is yet. When I read about the Think Kit Tools in the Paper App, I had to give them a try. I made a simple chart off the top of my head "What app am I using?." I got the hang of the tools pretty quickly and I was amusing myself as I thought about the differences between the coding apps I regularly use.
I tweeted it out a couple times to see if I could get Vicky Sedgwick and Brian Briggs’ feedback on it. And Brian suggested turning the image into a thinglink.
This first sketch began as a learning exercise, but it got me thinking about the decisions teachers make about the tools we use. I started a Google Doc and shared it with several teachers to see if we could pool our process for making choices about the program and platforms we use.
Even after just an hour I was amazed at the depth of possibilities. If I needed another dissertation project, this would be an awesome one. Here are some trends that surfaced quickly:
1. You don’t choose what you don’t know. Therefore, learning a wider range of tools, can give you more options, but only if you know the options that come with each tool.
2. Our platforms make a great number of decisions for us. The environment we teach in, from local politics all the ay down to wifi and devices can "set the menu"
3. If you want learning that reaches "past the tech" you have to set goals and a context that support that.
4. There will always be more tools to learn. This cannot be discouraging; this must be affirming. The tools of tomorrow will be even better than the tools we have now. If want to be sure this is the case? help to develop those tools.

I believe in the power of play in education and the last 2 years spent teaching tech in grades K-5 have really cemented the belief that there are at least 9 app features that should be considered before it enters the classroom environment. I clearly see how well-designed playful lessons support student empowerment and knowledge creation.
What does this have to do with App features? when you see my list of must haves you will see I am looking for ways to build more play int learning and make the time with tablets more seamlessly social.
There are so many places where you can learn about play, reward, engagement, and how it relates to gaming. If you are looking for someone to make you a believer, check out Jane Mcgonigal.
Once the power of play is visible, the challenge is getting the learning goals met, harnessing the energy of discovery and play, while also keeping the environment social. Luckily this is not a challenge teachers have to meet alone.
I got the chance to meet Evan Sosnik and Deena Minwalla from Co.Lab "an accelerator that works with startups leveraging the power of digital games to build transformative educational technologies for PK-12 students and teachers." from About Us.
Some of the transformative technologies Co.lab has supported and developed include Nearpod, The Foos, and Timbuktu.
In a conversation with Grant Hosford from Codespark, creator of The Foos I learned so much about how leveled programming apps that focus on sequence can support literacy skill acquisition.I love the way that mobile education is developing, and when I talk with other teachers and we dream big about what the classroom apps of tomorrow will do.
I love the way that mobile education is developing, and when I talk with other teachers and we dream big about what the classroom apps of tomorrow will do. Here are a collection of what we hope for in the apps of the future.
1. That the apps we use in the classroom are optimized for classroom workflow and assessment.
It needs to be easy to see how students are responding to a challenge and record that data for use in formative and summative assessments. We need to be able to quickly connect app-based work to the grade book.
2. More apps have an active "Pair work" mode designed to interact with 4 hands.
While the consumer model is one screen per person, in education we are often facing limited devices, or we may want students to work in pairs. Apps for young students need a "4 hands" mode.
3. Allow students to interact in digital space, like Minecraftedu.
The world of MinecraftEDu is a compelling social space. If we are training the kids to be digital citizens, let’s get them to share digital space with others and educate them into responsible us of those spaces.
4. Cross platform and web availability.
As a teacher, I want my students to be able to electively extend their learning at home. I love working on tools available in multiple platforms because it promotes student access.
Here are 9 suggestions for #EdTech App Developers to help them get their apps into our classroomsClick To Tweet
5. Teacher dashboard that connects with LMS/ SIS.
This relates to the first point, but the more the app can connect with the daily work of the school, the better. I would like to be able to set up a class directly from my sis, and assign homework and share progress directly in the LMS. Some apps and LMS tools give most of the tool away for free, but sell this connecting piece. That is a right place to locate the value, since the institution will be amking the purchase, have them pay for the tools they need.
6. Single sign on
Students and teachers are in demand more than ever to have application that work together. A Great example of this are websites that allow users to sign in using their Gmail or Facebook logins. This allows students to memorize a single password and be able to use it across many platforms.
7. Guidelines for meaningful learning both at home and in a classroom, what can parents and teachers do to support learning and reflection.
Apps are great, but when we have a one page guide to helping kids learn with apps it is really easy to send that hope and turn parents into partners.
8. Pricing models and purchasing options that make it easy for schools or parents to support the app developer and secure ongoing availability of the app or service.
Teachers love free apps, but what we love more is the ability to use an app and count on it to be there. Please consider offering options to support the app, or buy a class set of licenses for another class or school.
9. Industry standard to share/save/export/ or archive student work and progress in the app.
Save your progress and share it with another student is pretty common in class. Sometimes it takes the shape of passing your paper to the next person over. When we are working on devices we need more simple ways to share with others in our class.

Jeff sits down with Jack West to discuss why Hapara is the perfect tool for any school district wishing to properly and effectively manage their GAfE environment.
About Hapara
Hapara is a Māori word for dawn or daybreak. Teacher Dashboard was first conceptualized by a pioneering group of educators and developers working together to serve an under privileged population of students in Auckland, New Zealand.
The tools were built in a collaborative fashion to solve the knowledge management challenges teachers face when going all in with Google Apps. The Hapara team has grown significantly since the inception and now has team members in New Zealand, California, Boulder, Colorado and Washington DC.
Hapara’s exclusive focus on K12 education solutions for Google Apps has won the team several awards including the New York City Gap App Challenge Best Administrative App, the Texas Association of School Administrators iZone Award, and a Gates Foundation Literacy Challenge Prize.

Jeff sits down with Renaud Boisjoly to discuss how Studyo is being used worldwide by teachers and students to organize and manage their daily schedules.
About Studyo
Who we are and what we do
Studyo is a school planner (agenda) adapted to rota)ng day or block schedules and which puts the student at the center of their task and study planning. It displays the day with each class periods presented in a familiar layout all of which can be imported from the school’s administra)ve systems. Studyo allows both teachers and students to enter assignments, exams and ac)vi)es directly linked to each period. Students are ac)ve in the management of when they work on each task, making this tool very different from a simple calendar.
The problem
School today is very different than it was even a few years ago. A huge transforma)on is happening to replace paper with digital tools, which has led to the explosion of companies focusing on EdTech. And with the extra flexibility schools gain from the great quan)ty of plaGorms available, they are also paying the price. More complexity in managing all the tasks and tools. Students and teachers need new and beIer tools than the previously used paper planner.
Why Studyo
At Studyo we’ve built a modern mobile school planner based on our great experience in educa)on. Studyo connects to exis)ng administra)on tools such as Powerschool, Blackboard or others, to create a perfect experience for teachers and students at the beginning of the year. They pick their courses and can start sharing tasks and get the full benefits of the planner in instants.Studyo perfectly adapts to the demanding schedule structures of schools (no two week is the same because of 9 or 12 day cycles to name just two). And because teachers need to share links to various online resources, Studyo allows just this, to push and communicate informa)on to students directly. And with this ability, we now see the poten)al for Studyo to become a full collabora)on and communica)on environment, connec)ng online tools to the school planner, and it’S daily dashboard for students and teachers. As this channel, it ressembles Slack, but for classrooms instead of workgroups.
Why now
We have validated this over a year with 9 private schools, in Montreal and Quebec City, because they are the first to adopt mobile programs for students, seeing the benefits and living the challenges. Now that our first beta year is over, each of these schools and their 3,400 students are renewing for the coming year. Studyo will also be used by more schools, reaching a total of 55 for 2015-16, including a complete school board (Eastern Townships SB) and our first private school in New York City (St-Francis Prep). 82% of schools in North America are forecasted to implement student device programs over the next 2 years, and we expect our growth to match these project’s growth. Our pipeline of schools, and this expected growth rate are pu`ng us in line to reach 250 schools within the next 18 months, for a total of 125,000 students.
Key features:
Familiar Day/Period layout adapted to the school’s particular schedule
Tasks appear within each period
Teachers can assign tasks to students instantly
Timeline tasks view helps students organize work
Automatic set-up takes a few seconds for students and teachers

This year at ISTE 2015, I had the pleasure of reuniting with Tim Ridgway from Califone. For the last 4 years, Tim has brought some AMAZING products to the TeacherCast theater and this year was certainly no exception.
For the last 3 years, I have created over 300 audio and video broadcasts using Califone headphones. My "trademark" podcasting setup has included Califone’s NC500TFC Headphones line of headphones which are not only very clear to listen to, but VERY comfortable. The fact that the connecting wire is detachable has saved me several times when the babies have been sitting on my lap trying to rip them off my head.
Why Califone?
Why is Califone an important company to get to know in your school district? Standardized testing has forced schools and decision makers to completely rethink the way students are taught. Additionally, many of these tests require students to respond to audio prompts. The products found on Califone are not only capable of being implemented in your school across all devices, but they are able to be used time and time again… year after year.

For the last 4 years, I have witnessed Remind transform from a startup into a mega power player in the edtech world. Used by more than 25 MILLION educators, students and parents, Remind is "a safe way for teachers to text message students and stay in touch with parents."
How Can I Use Remind?
Using Remind is pretty simple. You can create a free account, setup a class and add engage your students through either SMS Text messaging, or email communication. Signing up for Remind is pretty easy and takes less than 15 seconds. Recently, educators have seen remind through a completely different lens. Teachers are now using Remind as a supplement for the traditional Newsletter. Are you following an educational twitter chat or a podcast? If so, there is probably a Remind group to support it.
Latest and Greatest
Just in time for ISTE 2015, Remind has launched a brand new Chat feature. Remind Chat now helps you keep connected with with your colleagues throughout the day. Check out this great post for more information.

Alefiya Bhatia and Susan Bearden sit down with TeacherCast to discuss why MAD-Learn from Crescerance is simply the BEST platform for school districts and students to create mobile apps.
MAD-Learn stands for Mobile Apple Development and frankly, you will be MAD not to check it out. In fact, if you were one of the lucky ones at ISTE this year, you might have been handed a token worth a FREE class set for their awesome app development system.
What Can You Design using MAD-Learn?
One of the big announcements that came out of ISTE this year was the launching of my second mobile app called Educational Podcasting Today. This amazing new app is designed exclusively using MAD-Learn. If you are interested in learning more about Podcasting or WordPress then you should check out EPT in the app store of your choice.
If you have yet to check out the new Educational Podcasting Today App, it is FANTASTIC! http://www.teachercast.net/eptapp.

For the last 4 years, I have had the pleasure of calling Angela Maiers one of my best and most awesomest friends. From the start of TeacherCast, she was there to help push me, guide me, and really make me believe that a crazy concept like TeacherCast can matter in this world. Truthfully, I find myself listening to her TED talk right before each of my large speaking engagements to pump me up. The woman is truly inspiring and I don’t know where I’d be without her on my speed dial.
Even Puppets Matter Too
Angela stopped by the TeacherCast LIVE booth this year at ISTE to share with us not only her genius, but the genius of millions of students across the world. Her words are breathtaking and jaw dropping. The best part of this interview was Angela’s engagement with my buddy Wokka Patue. I had a front row seat to the brilliance of not only Angela but Sam Patterson (the guy inside the puppet). I hope this interview means just as much to you watching as it meant for me to record it.

For the last 35 years I have been memorized by the work performed in a very remote location in California known as Skywalker Ranch. For 35 years, I have sat back and watched George Lucas inspire the world to unimaginable lengths.
Being Inspired By Greatness
Growing up, I had always wanted to be just like George Lucas. I wanted to do something special and be able to help inspire millions of people across the world. When I learned that Mr. Lucas not only had a passion for for Wookies and Ewoks, but also had a passion for education, my admiration for him grew so much that I decided to take my own adventure and follow in his footsteps and such…. TeacherCast was conceived.
This year at ISTE 2015, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Elana Leoni from Edutopia to discuss Mr Lucas’s vision for the future of education and together with Hadley Ferguson and Mary Beth Hertz, we discuss how Edutopia and the Edcamp Foundation are empowering students and teachers to create greatness in classrooms all around the world.

As a first year teacher, it was a daunting thought to find yourself in the principals office. It was even more of a nasty thought to be found in the Superintendents office. Throughout the years, those ideas and thoughts have become a thing of the past thanks to a simple concept know today as the Connected Educator.
The ability to reach out and have at your finger tips educational experts who have not only been in your shoes, but are willing to help you at any moment of the day is simply outstanding. Over the last few years, I have had the privilege of getting to know several educational leaders and know them well enough that I was able to confide in them not only the great stuff happening in my classroom, but the horrible, no good, very bad stuff happening in my classroom.
Why Interview Superintendents?
When I was setting up my interviews from ISTE 2015, it was a goal to have not only teachers, but educational leaders from the highest desks and finest offices across the country. Jason Eitner and Dr. Greg Goins are two outstanding Superintendents from the great states of New Jersey and Illinois. They have been not only supporters of TeacherCast, but of my professional career and I wouldn’t be in the position I am now without their mentorship.
In this interview, I break down the wall between teacher and administrator and prove to the world that even a superintendent can take a practical joke.

This years ISTE Conference kicked off with a bang. I had the pleasure of sitting down with two of my edu heroes Richard Byrne and Glenn Robbins. You may know Richard from his very popular website Free Tech For Teachers. Over the last 4 years, Richard has been the gold standard for what I have tried to create in TeacherCast. It’s always an amazing experience to have Richard take the time to sit down for a conversation.
Glenn Robbins is a Lead Learner in South Jersey. He is an amazing guy to follow on Twitter and a great guy to have an ice water with. Glenn and I have spent time together planning several Edcamps. He is also a great guy to turn to when the times get touch an you need a good friend to pick you up.

If you never thought that playing World of Warcraft or FPS games would prepare anyone for anything beyond an extended stay in their parents’ basement, it may be time to rethink that attitude. The use of virtual environments may be transforming not only nursing education but healthcare as a whole. With the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act firmly protected by a recent Supreme Court ruling, the expansion of healthcare benefits brings with it the need to expand healthcare personnel including technicians, nurses, clinicians, and other personnel.
Nursing VLEs 101
Virtual Learning Environments are online systems that allow nursing students to interact with nurse educators via the web. Think of them as a World of Warcraft guild for nursing students. There are lots of advantages to this technology, especially with the new generation of students who have grown up with MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) gaming and video chatting with friends on Skype. The advantages of these learning environments combine elements of gaming, videoconferencing, social media and other digital age interfaces familiar and engaging to millennial students.
Synchronous versus Asynchronous
The use of web-based synchronous instruction has been shown in a study by the National Institutes of Health to increase student engagement compared to exclusively asynchronous learning methods. The increased student engagement may improve learning outcomes and expand educational opportunities or students the safety of a controlled environment versus a live clinical setting or classroom simulation. Synchronous methods include:
• Audio and videoconferencing for lectures, discussions, presentations, and meetingsconcerning complex issues.
• Chat programs and instant messaging for quick communications and discussions of lesser complexity.
• Whiteboard and application sharing where and teams may develop ideas and create documents pertinent to group projects.
Enhancing these methods with asynchronous tools can help to sustain collaboration and intragroup dialogue while keeping resources available at all times despite students’ differing schedules. Asynchronous methods include:
• Discussion forums and email can track communication that occurs over longer periods of time.
• Blogging platforms where students can keep personal or group blogs.
• Streaming media such as podcasts or video for instructors to communicate with students, or students to communicate with each other.
• Web-based training courses can be useful, and even popular for students with self-discipline. These can include web books, document libraries, and a variety of different media.
However principle among the methods that engage students are the simulation environments. This is the "gameplay" experience that will find so engaging. While simulated environments have a longer history in aviation, the military, and the nuclear power industry, simulation in nursing is becoming an important part of nursing instruction at the novice level and continues to provide enrichment to career nurses as well, according to a study in the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing.
The study cites improvement in patient outcome, safety culture, and self-assessment across key learning themes such as clinical techniques, diagnostic factors, safety techniques, and other areas. Previous studies focused on the effectiveness of simulations on surgical nurses’ ability to recognize and respond to emergencies, or on improved triage abilities for registered nurses in the emergency department, this study involved the ability to respond to emergencies after receiving simulation training. Many hospitals such as Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston have incorporated simulation programs as part of their for technical, non-technical, and clinical skills.
How It Works
By incorporating a variety of simulations into learning experience at, it is possible to more adequately prepare nursing students at nursing schools in Arizona for situations that they will face in practice. There is already an acute shortage of nurses and 55% of the RN workforce is age 50 or older, with over 1 million RNs reaching retirement age in the next decade, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. The Association, working with nursing schools like Arizona College, is working to expand capacity and make high school students aware of nursing as a valid career choice, with opportunities for advancement, continuing education, and enrichment.
However, the nursing shortage is a very real and current subject and hitting just at a vital time when the Affordable Care Act is expanding access to health care for millions and the baby boomers are reaching retirement and Medicare eligibility age. Even with increases in enrollment, nursing remains at a critical low, impacting patient outcomes in areas from private practice to neonatal wards and intensive care units. By equipping and training aspiring nurses with state-of-the-art technology, and using clinical simulations for educational purposes, nursing education can help influence outcomes for the next generation. Nurses must be in the forefront of healthcare, and also the forefront of healthcare policy. Baccalaureate equipped registered nurses are far more likely to have the confidence it takes to speak up on healthcare issues from boots on the ground to esoteric policy.

This year at ISTE, I had the privilege of speaking with Michael Winters and Mary Jo Madda from EdSurge. EdSurge is an amazing website that constantly produces outstanding content. This by far was one of my favorite broadcasting sessions, mostly because Michael and Mary Jo were so easy to work with and they are both brilliant educators.
A few weeks ago I was contacted by Michael Winters, Product Manager at EdSurge to be a guest on their new (and awesome) podcast. They were putting together a show about podcasting and trends for the next year and after only a few moments together, I knew we had great chemistry together.
If you haven’t checked out EdSurge, I highly recommend that you do. They not only are producing a great podcasting series, but also offer fantastic educational summits across the country.
About EdSurge
EdSurge is a news and information company focused on the intersection between education and technology. EdSurge readers and fans are edtech entrepreneurs, educators, investors and education policy makers who are interested in technology K12 and Higher Ed.
EdSurge has keynoted with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, hosted an edtech video chat at the request of The White House, is one of TED’s top "education blogs to follow," and in 2013 was awarded "Most Influential Community Builder" by GSV Advisors

This year at ISTE 2015, I had the opportunity to gather a panel of some of todays biggest EdTech startups. The question on my mind recently has been "How can an edTech startup properly communicate with teachers when there are hundreds of other edtech startups trying to do the same thing?"
To help answer this question, I invited Aaron Sherman from StoryboardThat.com, Derek Teller from Celly, Emily Glover from Imagine Easy (EasyBib) and Andy Saberioon from PledgeCents on the program to talk about ISTE from an edtech start up’s point of view.

For the last 35 years I have been a MAJOR fan of LEGO. My house is filled with millions of plastic bricks, video games, and other LEGO products. Last year, I had the privilege of sitting down with LEGO Education to learn how LEGO is creating awesome products for STEM Education. This year, I asked them to showcase not only their great STEM products, but show off some of their LEGO DUPLO products for those of us with younger learners.
About LEGO Education
Since 1980, LEGO Education has delivered hands-on, curriculum-based resources for teachers and students worldwide. LEGO Education believes a hands-on, minds-on approach helps students actively take ownership of the learning process and develop 21st-century skills such as creative thinking and problem solving through real-life, engaging experiences.
