Environment, Health, and Safety Book Published Birmingham, Alabama, June 1, 2014- The ROI Institute has announced the publication of a new book "Measuring ROI in Environment, Health, and Safety," by Patricia Pulliam Phillips, Jack J. Phillips, and Al Pulliam, published by Scrivener Publishing, an imprint of the John Wiley Publishers. This new publication is two books in one. The first book shows how to measure the impact and the return on investment (ROI) of all types of environmental projects, health initiatives, and wellness and fitness programs, as well as safety and accident prevention. The second book features eight case studies providing a variety of examples on measuring ROI, the ultimate evaluation of a project. The step-by-step process featured in the book shows how to develop credible studies to satisfy the desires of top executives as they continue to invest in programs to improve the work environment, provide a safe workplace for employees, and invest in employee health and wellness. The book will be an indispensible reference for all professionals involved in Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS), and the managers who support the process. "We are pleased to add this new publication to our string of ROI books," said Jack Phillips, Chairman of ROI Institute. "We have had many requests from managers involved in the area of environment, health, and safety to provide consulting services to them, host internal certifications, and help them conduct their own studies." "Although executives are always prepared to invest in this important area, they want to see a return on their investment," Phillips added. "They want to see how well their programs are working. This book provides the know-how to make that happen." The book is a cornerstone of a new practice in the ROI Institute, which is the EHS practice to support health and safety professionals around the world. ROI Institute already offers a variety of one-day ROI overview workshops, two-day skill-building workshops, and five-day ROI Certification available for internal or public programming for general audiences. To better target the EHS audience, the company will offer consulting services to help organizations measure the success of these programs. "Sometimes an independent assessment of a program is what is needed to show the value of a program with credible CEO- and CFO-friendly data," said Patti Phillips, CEO and President of ROI Institute. "We stand ready to help show the value of investing in these critical programs in an organization. Federal, state, and local governments require some of these programs and it is helpful to see how well they are working. In other programs, such as wellness and fitness, health screening, behavioral safety and ergonomics may not be required, but are implemented to make a safe and healthy environment and to promote wellbeing and healthy living among employees." With this heavy investment, executives need to see how well their projects and programs are working. The ROI Methodology process captures six-types of data connected to any type of EHS project: reaction, learning, application, impact, ROI, and intangible data that can affect the results. "This is a much needed book for this industry at this time," said Al Pulliam, Environmental Health and Safety Manager at Laitram Industries in New Orleans. "I have been fortunate to work in this area for many years, having served in EHS management positions at Pratt & Whitney, Bayou Steel Corporation, as well as various contracting companies. This book will help readers understand the business value of EHS and ensure that new programs and projects are clearly connected to the business needs in the beginning. It also allows for easy data collection to see how well the programs are working. The financial ROI is an absolute must these days for programs that are very expensive and strategic." Copies of the book may by purchased directly from the publisher, John Wiley, amazon.com, or wherever quality books are sold. Copies are also available at the ROI Institute. Birmingham, Alabama, June 11, 2014- ROI Institute, Inc. is proud to announce the offerings of their world-renowned learning workshops in Spanish. Research shows that the top challenge for human resource and learning executives is to demonstrate the value of programs and projects. ROI Institute recognizes the need for these tools in the Spanish-speaking community and has translated several of their most popular workshops to fill that need. "We are proud to have the resources to start offering our workshops in Spanish," said Patti Phillips, President and CEO of ROI Institute. "In the past, we’ve had to rely on translators to provide these valuable workshops to the Spanish-speaking community, so we are pleased to have Lizette Zuniga on staff to be able to reach that audience." Lizette Zuniga serves as Director of ROI Implementation for ROI Institute. She speaks both English and Spanish fluently. With more than 15 years of professional experience, Dr. Zuniga has expertise in leadership and organizational development, learning and development, survey design, and ROI. The ROI Institute has appointed Dr. Zuniga to facilitate multiple workshops in Spanish. The ROI Institute is pleased to offer the following workshops in Spanish: • One-Day Bottomline on ROI Workshop—Offering a basic overview of the ROI Methodology, this workshop focuses on three important areas: the basics of the process, the benefits, and the barriers to ROI Implementation. • Two-Day Measuring Learning and Performance Workshop—Offering the basic competencies on ROI, this workshop teaches the ROI Methodology, showing participants how to use the ROI Methodology to set objectives, collect data, isolate the effects of learning, convert data to monetary value, capture costs, calculate ROI, and communicate the process and results. • Three-Day Measuring and Evaluating Learning Workshop—Offering competencies in measuring and evaluating learning, delving into each level of evaluation, leading up to ROI. In this workshop, students will apply the ROI Methodology to learning solutions, showing participants how to plan for the evaluation, set objectives, collect data, isolate the effects of learning, convert data to monetary value, capture costs, calculate ROI, and communicate results. The emphasis of the course is on writing productive tests and surveys to collect data that supports ROI studies. The key take away of this workshop is having participants draft action plans to implement evaluation in a practical and realistic way. • Five-Day ROI Certification—Offering competencies in measuring and evaluating human capital projects, the most advanced content in the marketplace. Using their own projects, participants experience first-hand application of the ROI Process Model, which is comprised of ten steps to calculate questions and apply the model to real-time projects. At the conclusion, participants will present data collection and their ROI Analysis plans. Upon completion, participants will receive coaching while conducting their ROI projects. Once competency in the ROI Methodology has been demonstrated through this study, certification is established, and the Certified ROI Professional (CRP) designation is assigned. These workshops can also be adapted to include organizational development type projects (e.g. change management, leadership development, etc.). If you are interested in scheduling one of these workshops with Dr. Zuniga, please contact info@roiinstitute.net. Birmingham, Alabama, July 7, 2014- Organizations pursuing the use of the ROI Methodology for their projects and programs are moving to internal processes, customized specifically for the needs of their companies. "Although workshops are conducted publicly and will continue to be offered, in the future, much of the work of the ROI Institute will be focused on internal processes," said Patti Phillips, President and CEO of ROI Institute. "For example, ROI Certification is conducted about 50 times a year, with internal certifications occurring about half of the time. We are actively promoting the benefits of having internal certifications to our customers." ROI Certification is a one-week workshop, which is designed for serious skill-building ROI studies. The participants come into the workshop with a project in mind for an ROI study. With an internal certification, the facilitators of the workshop can focus solely on organizational needs and tailor the content to fit personal agendas. When individuals complete their ROI study, they obtain the designation of Certified ROI Professional (CRP). "In the last two years, we have seen dozens of individuals and companies moving from public workshops to internal ROI Certification," adds Jack Phillips, Chairman of ROI Institute. Several events are driving this change. First, when an organization sends one or two individuals to an external certification, there is an expectation for ROI implementation when they return. Unfortunately, they feel like a lonely voice in the wilderness as they try to change current practices to focus more on results. What works best is to have a group of people attend and operate as a task force to implement the ROI Methodology. If this group consists of eight or more individuals, an internal certification works best from a cost perspective. The second issue is that in today’s market, individuals want a process customized to their situation. They not only want to address their particular function when ROI is discussed, but their particular types of programs. This can be a challenge to address each individual’s specific needs in a public session. An internal ROI Certification is an internal process customized directly to their types of projects or programs. Also, it leads to an increased success rate for internal ROI Certifications. For example, recently the National Bank of Egypt was successful in having all 35 human resource professionals achieve ROI Certification through an internal certification workshop. The same situation occurred with the Ministry of Education in the Sultanate of Oman and with the HR/technology function of Honeywell. The third issue is a growing trend in reduction of travel budgets, particularly for human resources and learning and development teams. Organizations continue to slash travel budgets unless it is for critical travel. For many organizations, learning and HR travel is not labeled as a critical need. Sometimes an HR department has difficulty getting approval for tuition for ROI Certification. A customized ROI certification, presented as a major effort to transform the way in which projects and programs deliver value, may be an easier sell. Finally, a fourth concern is that some individuals just do not want to travel. For a variety of personal reasons and work-life issues, they prefer to avoid the travel. Having certification in one location that is easy to access for all participants is much better for them. This customization works extremely well for two-day workshops, three-day workshops, and the five-day ROI Certification. "We see this trend continuing, and we are delighted with the challenge of customizing these workshops directly to the clients needs," said Jack Phillips. "This enables the group to focus directly on their process, and leave the certification workshop with a plan for ROI implementation for the organization." The two most common HCA projects are: developing relationships between variables (67%) and measuring the impact and ROI of an HR program (61%). The HR functional areas of focus are: recruiting/selection (72%), engagement (67%), leadership/management development (67%), learning/development/change (61%), and workforce planning (61%). The top three predictive relationships of interest are: engagement vs. productivity (71%), compensation retention (65%), and recruiting source vs. retention (53%). Most HCA projects are used to drive actions for decisions (71%), to improve a process (71%), and to promote human capital programs (65%). The top three enablers to HCA success are: team capabilities (65%), management support (65%), and success stories (59%). The top three barriers to HCA success are: data collection issues (65%), data integration issues (59%), and lack of skills (53%). Most HCA results are socialized via executive summaries (65%), dashboards/scorecards (59%), and one-page summaries (59%). The ROI Institute is pleased to announce the anticipated release of their newest publication, "Making Human Capital Analytics Work: Measuring the ROI of Human Capital Processes and Outcomes" by Patricia Pulliam Phillips and Jack J. Phillips. It is no secret that budgets are shrinking and scrutiny of departmental value is increasing. Not only do HR executives need to prove their department’s worth to the company, they also need to prove with inarguable data that the Human Resources Department is a strategic partner in the company’s pursuit of profit and growth.  This book focuses three types of analytics - descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive and shows how make the analytics process and function work in any organization. "We saw an opportunity to write a book that provides HR managers, executives, and specialists with tools to show how to connect HR to the business and optimize the value of HR," said Jack Phillips, chairman of ROI Institute. "There is a need to show how to place a monetary value on the hard-to-value measures and this book will show you how." Making Human Capital Analytics Work describes how human capital professionals can develop actionable information from data generated though their analytics practice and show the value of HR. It also shows how to measure the success of various HR programs with a financial ROI. "We are fascinated by the study of relationships between variables and how they connect and predict outcomes" said Patti Phillips, CEO and president of ROI Institute. "Jack and I are pleased to once again collaborate with McGraw-Hill on another book." This book is a helpful guide for any organization with a formal HR function, as well as executives who fund and request human capital projects and programs, analytics practitioners, managers in support role, not with HR, and those who have an external role to support human capital/HR accountability. This "must-read" book will show you how to apply analytics by developing relationships between variables, predicting the success of HR programs, determining the cost of intangibles that are otherwise difficult to value, showing the business value of particular HR programs, and showing how to calculate and forecast the ROI of various HR projects. This will be a valuable addition to anyone involved in and supporting the HR function and human capital programs. This book is available through McGraw-Hill, wherever quality books are sold, and at the ROI Institute, by clicking here. ROI Institute Announces 2015 Public Certifications The ROI Institute has announced its locations for the 2015 ROI certification, an intensive skill-building process that culminates with the participants completing an ROI study. A process that began with the first public certification in 1995, in Nashville Tennessee, 2015 represents our twentieth year delivering this valuable process. To date, over 10,000 individuals have attended this process, not only in the USA, but in over sixty countries. The process is designed to build serious capability and to evaluate all types of programs. Participants learn how to conduct ROI studies following the ROI methodology, the most used evaluation system in the world. The workshops are comprehensive and valuable for all types of professionals. "We are happy to have some new organizations join us as hosts this year, as well as our hosts from previous years," explains Patti Phillips, CEO of ROI Institute. She adds, "UPS, Siemens, GE, Scripps Health, and ACCO continue as hosts. Several new organizations have joined us in hosting certification including; Entereza in Albuquerque, NM, Market Traders in Orlando, FL, and Scripps Health Care in San Diego, CA. "We are very excited about the twenty year celebration of this process," says Jack Phillips, Chairman of ROI institute. He adds, "When we facilitated our first certification we were not sure if this would be successful.  However, it has exceeded our expectations. This skill-building is extremely valuable for the individuals who have participated in this process.  It has made a difference in their professional, and in many cases, their personal lives as well. We are so honored to have had such large numbers of participant take advantage of this opportunity." "We have some new twists in the certification this year," says Chris Kirchner, Director of ROI Implementation at ROI Institute. "We have added more human capital analytics measurements, additional tools and case studies for use in the certification. At the present time, a little over fifty percent of those who attend complete the certification requirements to earn the Certified ROI Professional (CRP) designation. We are experimenting with some ways to enhance this by assisting individuals in completing their first study. Our research has shown that if a participant follows through and completes their first study, they are more likely to use the methodology more efficiently and frequently with their programs." "ROI public certifications are certainly an important part of what we do. We are also getting more requests for internal certifications," adds Debbie Golan, Client Relationship Manager at ROI Institute. "To implement this throughout an organization, it requires a team of individuals who have the same skill sets and goals.  When an organization needs to build capabilities within an entire team, we find it is more efficient to conduct an internal certification. Internal certification programs have the advantage of being customized directly to the organization and their culture…" For more information on the ROI certification, a copy of our detailed program brochure and our 2015 schedule, please visit www.roiinstitute.net or contact us at info@roiinstitute.net The post 2015 Public Certifications appeared first on ROI Institute.

ROI Institute, Inc. has announced the publication of a new book "Measuring the Success of Leadership Development: A Step-by-Step Guide for Measuring Impact and Calculating ROI," by Patricia Pulliam Phillips, Jack J. Phillips, and Rebecca Ray. This new publication is a part of the "Measuring the Success" Series of books produced and published by ATD Press and edited by Patti and Jack Phillips. It is already one of the top 12 titles from ATD in 2015. Other publications include "Measuring the Success of Sales Training," "Measuring the Success of Organizational Development," "Measuring the Success of Coaching," and "Measuring the Success of Learning Through Technology." "Leadership development is being funded at record paces all around the globe, states Patti Phillips, president and CEO of ROI Institute. "At the same time, there is a record amount of requests for accountability. These days that usually includes connecting leadership development to business impact and in many cases the actual financial ROI. This seems like a logical request. Additional costs with a significant allocation of the budget will mean that its value needs to be known to those who fund it. The good news is that it is not that difficult to connect leadership development to business measures and show the financial ROI," adds Patti. "This new book not only shows you how to do it in a credible way, but it also provides six case studies showing you how it has been done." "In over two decades of providing measurement services and support to organizations around the world, we have had many requests for more information about measuring the success of leadership development," adds Jack Phillips, chairman ROI Institute. "This is another important publication in that effort. Two years ago we published a definitive book on how to measure the ROI of Leadership Development in our book titled "Measuring Leadership Development: Quantify Your Program’s Impact and ROI on Organizational Performance" (McGraw-Hill, 2012). That book provides much detail on how this is done. This new book provides case studies to bring that process to life. In addition, it has enough data so that a person who is just getting started can see how this measurement is accomplished." This is our 46th book with ATD and we are very proud of our publishing partnership. "Developing leaders in organizations continues to be at the top of the CEO’s agenda. This is essentially what is causing the record amounts of investment in leadership development globally. Executives want great, ethical leaders who can transform organizations. At the same time, in the spirit of accountability, they need to see the value it is delivering. This new book will show you how it is done with easy-to-follow steps and real life examples," said Rebecca L. Ray, Ph.D., executive vice president, Knowledge Organization; and human capital practice leader, The Conference Board. Readers of the new publication will appreciate that the authors have provided two books in one. The first part of the book details how leadership development programs are evaluated at the business impact and return on investment (ROI) levels and provides a condensed explanation of the methodology. The second part of the book provides case studies as examples to show how this has been accomplished. The books "Measuring Leadership Development: Quantify Your Program’s Impact and ROI on Organizational Performance" and "Measuring the Success of Leadership Development" can easily be used together. One for a quick reference with case studies and the other a more detailed how-to information. Copies of the new book may be purchased directly from the publisher, ATD Press, Amazon.com, or wherever quality books are sold. Copies are also available on our website at http://www.roiinstitute.net/roi-resource-center/. For more information, contact ROI Institute at www.roiinstitute.net. There is no doubt that learning through technology continues to grow in its scope, depth, and funding.  Whether it’s online learning, eLearning, blended learning, game-based learning, or mobile learning, technology-based learning is here to stay and it will grow.  It will grow because for a large audience, it is extremely low in cost, it is convenient to the participants involved in the programs, and it makes learning accessible to people who, maybe, could not enjoy the learning previously. The problem is that it doesn’t always deliver the results needed to make a difference inside organizations.  For example, technology-based learning typically breaks down at the application level (using what was learned) and the impact level (the consequences of the application). This is a concern for those who want to see results for this growing technology use.  It has become so much of an issue that in some organizations, executives will not let the learning team use eLearning mobile learning, or game-based learning on anything that is important to and serious in their organizations. Obviously, this has to be changed. Our new book published in 2014, "Measuring the Success of Learning Through Technology: A Guide for Measuring Impact and Calculating ROI on E-Learning, Blended Learning, and Mobile Learning," is gaining a lot of respect and positive comments from the industry.  This book not only shows how to measure the ROI of learning through technology, but also includes multiple case studies representing blended learning, online learning game based learning, eLearning, and mobile learning.  In addition, we recently partnered with CrossKnowledge, a Wiley Company, to produce a publication, "5 Keys to Improve the ROI of Your Distance Learning Solutions." This publication is available through CrossKnowledge.com. To help support this we have been asked to develop articles for TD Magazine, a publication of the Association of Talent Development (ATD) and other publications.  Jack Phillips presented a publication at The 2015 Talent Conference in Paris, The Training Magazine Conference 2015 in Atlanta, and is scheduled to do a variety of presentations, including the keynote at the oldest conference for distance education conducted by the University of Wisconsin. "We know that eLearning can make a difference.  But unfortunately, many times it does not.  The challenge is for designers and developers to make that different," explains Jack Phillips, chairman ROI Institute.  "Essentially, the designer and developers replace the facilitator in terms of the individual who can have the most influence on a participant’s use of the knowledge and skills and the impact it overall." "With continuing heavy investments in technology-based learning, we know it’s here to stay," states Patti Phillips, president and CEO of ROI Institute.  "It will be supported more fully, funded more sufficiently, and will enjoy the respect that it deserves in terms of driving business value if the designers and developers take steps to make it work.  These two publications show them how to do it.  Our presentations are teaching them how to do it, and we are doing our best to help this industry continue to show value." "The good news is that good progress is being made.  We see many studies, including the ones we publish, where it can make a difference.  We want to encourage the designers and developers to use their creativity, their impressive tools, and motivational processes to keep the learner engaged through application and impact.  When they do, technology-based learning will rule," added Jack Phillips. "Measuring the Success of Learning Through Technology: A Guide for Measuring Impact and Calculating ROI on E-Learning, Blended Learning, and Mobile Learning" by Tamar Elkeles, Patricia Pulliam Phillips, and Jack J. Phillips  is a part of the "Measuring the Success" Series of books produced and published by ATD Press.  Other publications in the series include: "Measuring the Success of Sales Training: A Step-by-Step Guide for Measuring Impact and Calculating ROI," "Measuring the Success of Organizational Development," "Measuring the Success of Coaching," and "Measuring the Success of Leadership Development."  Copies of these books may be purchased directly from the publisher, ATD Press, Amazon.com, or wherever quality books are sold. "Normally we do not have this many books released in a two month period, but through a series of shifting schedules, we are delighted to have all four of them at this time," states Patti Phillips, CEO and President of ROI Institute. "These books complement our work, and we are excited about bringing these to the marketplace through some very impressive publishers. We expect at least two of these to be best sellers." "The two consulting books complement our practice of helping consultants become more effective," explains Jack Phillips, Chairman of ROI Institute. "The book on Human Capital Strategy is our effort to help HR executives drive value in organizations, and help steer an organization properly through the complex, dynamic, and changing environment where they operate. The new leadership book is our forty-sixth publication with ATD and continues our efforts to help professionals show the value of all types of programs, and in this case, leadership development, one of the most critical activities in an organization. ROI Institute, Inc. cofounders Jack and Patti Phillips have coauthored a new book, Performance Consulting: A Strategic Process to Improve, Measure, and Sustain Organizational Results, 3rd edition, written with Dana Gaines Robinson, James C. Robinson, and Dick Handshaw.  Published by Berrett-Koehler, it’s the third edition of a classic bestseller in the human resources, learning and OD fields. "This new book links performance consulting and ROI, concepts that have always been connected but never documented appropriately in a book," explains Jack Phillips, chairman, ROI Institute. "Performance Consulting shows in detail how projects are aligned to business measures and how to select the proper solution, two very important issues facing consultants in any field.  This new book takes the classic book, Performance Consulting, and makes it more powerful with the addition of the ROI Methodology.  In essence, this is a new book with a comprehensive approach.  It’s like having two books in one." "Our work with ROI has always led us to the front-end analysis," adds Patti Phillips, president and CEO of ROI Institute. "Our studies reveal that the number one reason that projects fail to deliver impact and ROI is a lack of business alignment.  The number two reason is that the wrong solution was implemented.  These two problems are eliminated with the approach outlined in Performance Consulting.  Previously we have addressed it in our workshops.  Now, this new book lets us explore it more directly using the classic, proven approach of the Robinsons." "This book adds to our library of books supporting consultants," adds Jack Phillips.  "In addition to this new book, we have previously published three books with McGraw-Hill, The Consultant’s Scorecard, now in its second edition, How to Build a Successful Consulting Practice which is a best seller at McGraw Hill, and The Consultant’s Guide to Results-Driven Business Proposals: How to Write Proposals That Forecast Impact and ROI.  This is part of our efforts to help consultants to be more effective and deliver results to those who fund consulting projects, in terms that they appreciate and understand." Extensively revised and completely updated, this new 20th anniversary edition features an updated model, new cases, extensive new material on evaluation and ROI and sustaining the impact of performance change initiatives. Performance Consulting remains a profoundly practical book. It will enable you to make a difference in your organization that is valued, measurable, and sustainable. Copies of the book may be purchased directly from the publisher at www.bkconnection.com, www.amazon.com, or wherever quality books are sold. Copies are also available from ROI Institute in the Resource Center. ROI Institute, Inc. has announced the publication of a new book "Maximizing the Value of Consulting: A Guide for Internal and External Consultants,"  by Jack J. Phillips, William D. Trotter, and Patricia Pulliam Phillips, published by Wiley Publishing, Hoboken, New Jersey. "For some time we have been wanting to develop a book that focuses on the three major segments of consulting that translate into value," explains Jack Phillips, chairman of ROI Institute.  "The first is to ensure that the consulting project is the right solution needed for the client and it is connected to business metrics in the beginning.  The second is to make sure that the project is efficiently managed to control costs and ultimately deliver a more cost effective solution to the client.  The third is to show the value that has been delivered to the client, including ROI.  Sometimes ROI is calculated before the project is implemented with a forecast, but more often it is calculated after the project is completed to show the impact and financial ROI.  This new book accomplishes that goal by addressing both of these very important time frames for ROI." "Consulting continues to be a very attractive occupation, internally or externally," states Patti Phillips, president and CEO of ROI Institute.  "Consulting work is engaging, interesting, and rewarding in many ways.  At the same time, if it is not managed properly and the value is not delivered, it won’t be sustained as a viable process for long periods of time.  In fact, data shows that for external consultants, 80 percent are out of business in the first two years.  Among the principle reasons for this is not being able to show the value to the client." "Internal consulting continues to grow in organizations tackling a wide variety of projects.  For internal consultants to continue to flourish, be successful, and sustainable in today’s economy, they must show the value of what they do in terms that clients and top executives appreciate and understand," explains Dr. William D. Trotter, executive director of Association of Internal Management Consultants (AIMC), "They must articulate this information in an efficient and effective way.  This new book shows you how to do this." "Patti and I have worked as external consultants for the past two decades, assisting literally hundreds of organizations to show the value of what they do."  Jack Phillips adds, "At the same time, we have also worked with hundreds of internal consultants who are equally concerned about showing the value of their contributions.  We are so pleased to have a book that focuses on both areas.  To achieve this we teamed up with Bill Trotter whose broad experience of internal consulting coupled with our experience of the last two decades at the ROI Institute, provide a tremendous base of experience to assist internal and external consultants who often struggle with delivering the proper value." "This book is very detailed and should be a great reference for every consultant." Patti Phillips enthusiastically concludes, "If you are concerned about connecting to business value and adding business value in an efficient way, you need this book.  It is an absolute ‘must’ guide for every consultant." Copies of the book may be purchased directly from the publisher, www.wiley.com, amazon.com, or wherever quality books are sold. While I can measure my 2010 in client events, boarding passes, and loads of laundry, I could just as easily measure it in the number of times I heard "cautious optimism"; read another article on managing generational differences in the workforce; or received an invitation to a free webinar on how to leverage social media tools.

The skill practice component of our leadership development program, Interaction Management, usually starts slow, with participants considering it a chore, or a workshop activity they just have to do. But after the first round of feedback, most realize the tremendous learning they just experienced.

There is a dirty little secret to Web 2.0—and thus Learning 2.0, and that is the Power Law. By definition, this is a mathematical relationship between two quantities. In the case of social media, it has evolved into a 90-9-1 distribution. Essentially, 90 percent of people using these tools are passive observers, 9 percent are active contributors, and 1 percent are the leaders and creators.
