OER TALK! I will be giving (Insya-Allah)  a talk on Open Educational Resources (OER) at MEIPTA's (Malaysian Public Universities e-Learning Council) 16th Roundtable Meeting at UTeM (in Malacca) on the 18th September, 2012.This talk will explore OER and how we can find, reuse, remix, create and share them. It provides a lot of excellent resources and tips, too. It also shares TWO BIG IDEAS on how to create awareness and inspire OER development in Malaysia. Please explain? I shall say no more :)PRESENTATION SLIDESHere are the presentation slides for my OER talk: OER Talk to MEIPTA from IMU (International Medical University) I am really looking forward to my OER talk and the whole-day event trying to make sense of OER and how to move forward with it in Malaysia. If you have any suggestions/recommendations, or feel that something is missing in my presentation slides (166 slides! Most are just examples of OER...So, not so overwhelming as the number might seem!)  that you would like me to include, please speak (write) up! Slides can always be updated :)

WOW! Today, I am promoting IMU and an Open Educational Resources (OER) workshop that I will be conducting on 22-23 November, 2012 (Insya-Allah).  Should you go? If you are clueless of what OER, OCW, CC and MOOCs are, then you are lost in the (e-learning) past, and you are strongly recommend to attend this workshop. Besides this, we will have a lot of fun, and we will even gamify the learning experience discovering and creating OERs. WOW!OER WORKSHOPThis 2 day hands-on workshop will equip participants with the necessary skills to find, reuse, remix and create Open Educational Resources (OER) for their courses. During the first day, we will explore and discuss together the concept of OER, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Creative Commons (CC), business models, and variety of OpenCourseWare (OCW) case studies and content development tools. During the 2nd day, participants will be required to work in groups (hands-on) to create a course topic/module (of choice) by reusing and remixing OER from a variety of resources. In the final session, we will discuss how to move forward with OER at our institutions. LEARNING OUTCOMES After completing this workshop, you will be able to:Discuss the benefits and challenges of OER.Explore Creative Commons as an alternative to Copyright.Find OER and OCW using a variety of search tools.Identify a variety of web 2.0 and Social Media tools to develop OER.Reuse/Remix/Create OER using a Blog, Wiki or LMS. ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM CLICK HERE to DOWNLOAD the OER workshop registration form.More details:OER Workshop at IMU (22-23 Nov)FACILITATORZaid Ali Alsagoff is the e-Learning Manager and Fellow of IMU Centre for Education. CHALLENGE!Today, educators are overwhelmed (literally drowning!) by thousands of web 2.0/social media/apps that they can use for learning and teaching. But, where/how to start? How do we choose the right solution for a particular learning context or activity? The LMS can certainly not solve all our learning and teaching needs and requirements. Actually, compared to some of the amazing learning possibilities out there, most LMS I have explored (especially Moodle and Blackboard) are not only very limited, but used alone can even kill creative expression and learning in so many ways.  One way to find the right tool (or app) for a learning context/activity/situation, is to look through the eyes of Bloom's taxonomy. Although, I am not a fan of dumping a tool within a level of Bloom's taxonomy, which is often very misleading, it can be helpful for educators to discover new tools and possibilities. But, please keep in mind that many tools/apps can easily be used for all the levels of Bloom's taxonomy with an open and creative mindset. Therefore, don't be fooled by these Bloom's digital taxonomies shared below, and use them instead to discover new tools and ways to inspire more engaging and creative learning.BLOOM'S DIGITAL TAXONOMIESHere is a collection of Bloom's digital taxonomies that I have discovered until now:* Click on the image to view the full size, or the 'Source' under each version to discover more about them (origin).Source Source WEB 2.0/SOCIAL MEDIASourceSource  SourceSourceSourceSourceSourceIPAD   SourceSource(The following three diagrams below are not Bloom's Digital Taxonomy stuff, but included anyway!)  SourceSourceSourceGOOGLE Source  Source ANDROIDSource MOODLESource (Download the PDF version)Besides Bloom's digital taxonomies, you might also want to explore Bloom's Taxonomy Wheel for Writing Learning Outcomes.MORE EXAMPLES?If you have discovered other useful digital Bloom taxonomies, please share them in the 'Comments' section below (URL), and I will add them above (if they are useful). However, if you ask me, I would prefer having a tool/app taxonomy according to type of learning activity (Lecture, individual/group assignment, quiz, tutorial, etc.) rather than many of these Bloom's digital taxonomies above. Any awesome one to suggest? :)

This will be my second lunch-time workshop (out of six) at Unirazak on Wednesday, 3 October, 2012! We will be rocking Twitter for learning this time around. Twitter is certainly my favorite tool to connect with amazing people around the world. Let's hope we can inspire a few more educators to use it both for self and student learning!  *Poster: Visualized by Dr. Dewi Binti Amat SapuanWORKSHOPDid you know that over 500 million people around the world actively use Twitter today? Since its launch in 2006, Twitter has become one of the top 10 most visited websites on the Internet, and has been described as "the SMS of the Internet." I am really looking forward to my 'DNA of a 21st Century Educator'  talk on the 4th October (2012) at Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Bahasa Melayu (Kuala Lumpur). Mimma Sayuti Mat Khalid, thanks for inviting me to give this talk! Insya-Allah, I will be able to engage the teachers attending, and inspire those who are not already inspired to explore a new brave and open world of learning and teaching.Actually, it is never too late to embrace it, and when we do...WOW! 21ST CENTURY EDUCATOR?During your lifetime you have probably experienced inspirational educators, or witnessed inspiring lectures. But, what about you? Are you such an educator? If not, why not? In this talk, I explored some of the ingredients top educators in the 21st century have, and how we can learn from them, and reinvent ourselves to reach our true potential as an educator. SLIDES DNA of a 21st Century Educator (v3) from IMU (International Medical University) If you try, you can!  This will be my third lunch-time workshop (out of six) at Unirazak on Wednesday, 17 October, 2012! We will be exploring blogging for learning and teaching this time around. In terms of reflective learning and meta-cognition, I simply can't think of a learning tool that has had more impact on my learning, thinking and writing skills than blogging. *Poster: Visualized by Dr. Dewi Binti Amat Sapuan WORKSHOP Why use blogs in education? Blogs can provide an empowering and engaging communication and collaboration space for educators and students to share and reflect their discoveries, ideas and research together. Actually, the possibilities for using blogs for learning and teaching are mind boggling. For example, you could set up a course blog to keep students updated with the latest trends and news in a particular learning domain. Why do it yourself? Assign students to manage the blog. More importantly, blogs are great for empowering students to improve their reflective writing and thinking skills in a more social and engaging manner compared to hard or soft copy submissions to the lecturer (only). In this workshop, we will explore a variety of ways to use blogs for learning and teaching, and participants will be required to create a blog and conceptualize a strategy to make it work.LEARNING OUTCOMES After this workshop, you will be able to:Discuss how to use blogs to facilitate learning and teaching.Set up your own blog using Google Blogger. Customize your blog for educational purposes.SLIDESLet's BLOG!!! :)

LIT02 Let's congratulate Norhayati, her team and Taylor's University for a learning rich and well organized Learning Innovation Talks (LIT) 02! THANK YOU!Sadly it was a smaller crowd than during LIT 01 (30+ compared to 100+), but interestingly most participants lasted until the end. I think this was due to the fact that we had some awesome speakers around including Mimma and Norhayati from LIC (Learning Innovation Circle). Personally, I learned a lot, had great fun, and met some interesting new educators with passion to innovate and share (Al-Hamdulilla!). MY TALKMy self-assessment gives me a C++. This was the first time I gave a 45 minute talk about gamification or gamifying classroom learning, so I still got tremendous room for improvement in gaming it (LOL!). Overall, I really enjoyed the whole learning cycle, especially the researching and preparation part. Here are the slides for you to explore (please don't ignore the awesome URLs on most slides): Gamifying Classroom Learning from Zaid Alsagoff LEARNING NOTESA Twitter hashtag '#LIT02' was set up during the Learning Innovation Talks to encourage those who were using Twitter to share their tweets during the event (Forgot to announce it!!!). However, only 3 (awesome people) joined the sharing session using this Twitter hashtag (out of 30+ participants). So,  if you are interested to recap or discover the most important learning insights I shared during the talks using Twitter, here they are (URLs are clickable):Twitter Notes - Learning Innovation Talks 02LIT 03...WHERE AND WHEN?Timing is important! This time around, most active LICers and even many lecturers from Taylor's University were busy with everything from giving talks, mid-term exams, returning from India to being engrossed in correcting exams according to crazy deadlines. So, next time I suppose we need to negotiate a LIT time were most can make it, and if agreed must stick to their agreement to participate and speak. Also, since we are talking about 'INNOVATION TALKS', we need to innovate and explore new alternative frontiers in empowering it to happen. As such, we are considering that that the next LIT or LIT 03 will be fully online some time during APRIL 2013. This will empower us also to invite speakers and have participants from any corner of the world. Better yet, it will be totally free to attend (except for our time), if I get my way.So, LIT 03 will be organized by IMU and will be fully online (April 2013). Can it go wrong? Of course! But if you don't try to innovate (before making an opinion), you might as well be a chicken! What do you think?

Alhamdulillah, 2012 was an exciting year with many inspiring learning adventures and memories! For those of you who missed some of them, or are new to ZaidLearn, here is a compilation of the learning adventures and ideas explored in 2012. The compilation is organized into themes, rather than just a bunch of links archived according to chronological order.    IMU WEBINAR SERIES The IMU Webinar Learning Series was conceptualized late 2011 and launched early 2012. This initiative’s mission is to connect inspiring and exceptional educators around the world to share their knowledge, best practices, experiences and wisdom related to learning and e-Learning to educators attending online from IMU, Malaysia and around the world. Anyone is free to attend the live webinar (web conferencing) sessions, and all the sessions are recorded, and made available online as Open Educational Resources (OER).14 webinars have been successfully completed since it was launched, and it has attracted some world renowned learning experts to share their knowledge and experiences on various topics.   Facebook for Learning and Teaching? (Zaid Alsagoff)Web Conferencing for Teaching, Learning and Meetings (Zaid Alsagoff and Fareeza Marican)How to Become a Rapid E-Learning Pro (Tom Kuhlmann) Facilitating a Massive Open Online Course (Stephen Downes)  Games, Gamification and the Need for Engaging Learners (Karl Kapp)  From Tinkering to Tottering to Totally Extreme Learning (Curtis Bonk)  e-Learning in Malaysian Institutions of Higher Learning: Lessons Learnt, Issues & Challenges (Prof. Amin)  Social Learning Revolution (Jane Hart)  Using Technogogy for Engaging & Effective Learning (Prof. Rozhan)  10 Ways to Be a Better Learner (Jeff Cobb)  Instructional Design for the Real World (Jane Bozarth) Social Media & Mobile Technology: Learning in a Digital Age (Steve Wheeler)  Your Brain on Graphics (Connie Malamed)  Authenticity & WizIQ (Nellie Deutsch) I simply can't put into words how much I have learned by interacting with all these great learning minds, and organizing this online webinar series with IMU's e-Learning Team (Fareeza, Hasnain and Frashad...Who is now with Sime Darby). Also, it is inspiring to know that my boss Prof. Jai Mohan will always try to attend the webinar sessions, wherever he may be.While the webinars were awesome, I had most fun trying to persuade many of these learning giants to do a webinar for this series, and some were really hard to convince (and a few impossible ones, too). For example, to convince Curtis Bonk was no easy task, and I had to use tactics unheard of in the Academic world to make that happen. Also, we did experience some hurdles and bloopers during the webinar series, which are today unforgettable learning memories. For example, one speaker didn't turn up for the webinar session due to a miscommunication, and this can certainly happen when the talk is scheduled on different days due to time differences. So, please always send multiple e-mail reminders (e.g. 24 hours and 2 hours before) to ensure that the speakers don't forget the event. Remember, experts are always busy, and often forgetful even with Calendar reminders.   OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES (OER) I really have to thank Tan Sri Emeritus Prof Dr Gajaraj Dhanarajan and Prof Mohandas Balakrishna Menon foremost for convincing me to conduct OER workshops. First, Tan Sri Gajaraj asked me late 2011 to write an OER chapter with him, which I declined. But then early 2012, Prof. Mohandas persuaded me to conduct an OER Workshop at Wawasan Open University (I had been recommended to him by Tan Sri Gajaraj). Before this, I have for several years been exploring OER in my talks and workshops, but never conducted a workshop dedicated to OER. I suppose, this focused exploration into OER, helped me rediscover my passion for OER (which started in 2005). And since April 2012, I have given 2 talks and facilitated 4 (2-day) workshops on OER in various places. So, I must be doing something right here. TalksOER Talk (at UKM)OER TAlk (at MEIPTA) WorkshopsThe OER Workshop (at WOU) The OER Workshop (at USM) The OER Workshop II (at USM) The OER Workshop (at IMU)Interestingly, there are already 3 more OER workshops in the pipeline for 2013 (including two in Saudi Arabia).LEARNING INNOVATION TALKS (LIT)Learning Innovation Talks (LIT) is the first real innovation to spark out of the Learning Innovation Circle (LIC).The idea behind LIT was to organize 2-3 events per year, whereby educators could get together to share their learning and teaching innovations with one another in a more informal, relaxed, learning enriched, and innovative manner compared to traditional conferences and seminars. There is no fixed format, and it is up to the organizer to explore and innovate how sharing and learning should take place. The first two LIT rounds were held at University of Malaya (7 March), and Taylor’s University (20 November) respectively. My LITs Using Twitter to Transform Classroom Learning (Round 1) Gamifying Classroom Learning (Round 2)The 3rd LIT event will be organized by the International Medical University (IMU), and is tentatively scheduled to happen sometime in April 2013. This LIT will be hosted fully online, and it will be interesting to see how this innovation unfolds. 21st CENTURY EDUCATORI gave a talk exploring The DNA of a 21st Century Educator at the 'Annual Teaching and Learning Seminar 2012' at USM (26th June). Based on feedback, it was very well received. Then, I gave the talk at IMU, but hardly anyone turned up for this particular session. So, I thought, maybe I should not talk about this topic anymore. Then I uploaded my presentation slides to SlideShare, and it became 'Top Presentations of the day' (3 are selected everyday among thousands) within hours, and 'WOW-LY' it received 15,000+ views in 2 days.  Hmm, perhaps I should talk about this and explore this even more. On the 4th October (2012), I also gave the evolving '21st Century Educator' talk at the Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Bahasa Melayu (Kuala Lumpur). DNA of a 21st Century Educator (v3) from Zaid Alsagoff My Talks The DNA of a 21st Century Educator  at USMDNA of a 21st Century Educator at IPGKB   Whatever happens regarding this particular talk, I really enjoyed researching and exploring this area, so why stop here? SOCIAL MEDIAAs usual, I did conduct Social Media related talks and workshops during 2012, too. Most interestingly,  I  facilitated two 2-day 'Using Facebook & Twitter for Learning & Teaching' workshops at the National Center for E-learning and Distance Learning (NCeL), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), from 6-9 May (Male and Female).  TalksEmpowering Personal Learning Environments at USM!  Using Social Media for Research at APAME Convention 2012 Using Social Media for Research from Zaid Alsagoff Workshops2 'Using Facebook & Twitter For Learning & Teaching' Workshops at NCeL (Saudi Arabia) Facebook for Learning at Unirazak  Twitter for Learning at Unirazak Blogging for Learning at UnirazakARTICLES & IDEAS Besides giving talks and workshops, I did manage to explore some ideas and discover some sizzling learning resources during 2012. Here they are:Move Aside TEDx, Here Comes The Learning Innovation Talks (LIT)!  Rediscovering Curt Bonk's Extreme Learning World!Gamify to Amplify the Learning Experience!  Are You a Learning Gladiator? Creating a Master List!  The Best Quick Reference Guides to Web 2.0 on the Planet...Period!  From Flipped to Gamified Classroom Learning!  A Juicy Collection of Bloom's Digital Taxonomies!  The Autism Revolution: Chronic, Persistent & Changeable Features (Martha Hebert)   2013?So, what have I planned for 2013? Seriously, planning is not my strongest point. I work best, when I let learning take its' natural flow. Though, I have finally decided to take that PhD pill, and will Insya-Allah embark on my PhD with OUM in 2013. Since many people I know cannot stop calling me either Doctor or Professor, it is about time I officially embark on becoming one. Focus area? OER!While I focused on designing 'sizzling learning experiences' in 2012, I want to focus on designing more authentic and engaging assessment in 2013. If we want real change in the learning process and mindset of learners, we have to rethink and transform assessment. We have to stop kidding ourselves believing that essay and tick-your-answer questions alone are going to prepare students to become successful citizens and workers in a 21st century world. We also know that assessment and exams drive students to study and learn, so why not use them to truly transform students' learning for the better? However, my first mission in 2013 is to prepare and facilitate an 'iPad for Learning & Teaching' workshop on the 9th January (IMU staff only). Why iPads? Why not? :)

First, I would like to declare that I am NOT working for Apple, and I was certainly not paid for preparing a workshop (and slides) on using iPad for learning and teaching. However, I do use iPad a lot for my own personal learning, and there are some really cool things that educators can do with it to engage students and inspire more creativity, besides the negative aspects which are highlighted, too (Slide 11).The 'iPad for Learning and Teaching' workshop was facilitated at IMU on the 9th January, 2013 (for IMU faculty staff only). Now, let's explore some of the cool stuff!IPAD WORKSHOPThis 1/2 day hands-on workshop will awaken and empower you on how iPads can be used more strategically and effectively for learning and teaching using a range of cool apps. It will be interactive, engaging, fun, and you will learn a lot of tips on how to use mobile devices to engage your students in and beyond the classroom. After completing this workshop, you will be able to:Download and annotate presentations/articles/notes.Use social media to connect and collaborate with others.Create interactive multimedia e-books.Create and publish online interactive video tutorials.Use a variety of apps to engage students in and beyond the classroom. Source This Article in other formats: Scribd SlideSharePDF  DISCOVERY The last time I looked in a mirror, I certainly didn't look like that! However, the 'DNA' slide looks familiar. Oops, it looks like a slide from my 'DNA of a 21st Century Educator' (Version 2) presentation. Awesome! Someone in China has translated my slide, and is sharing it with a group of local and international educators attending a conference (or seminar) exploring the future of education at the Luoyang International School (17 Oct, 2012). Here is another picture that reveals a bit more about this event:SourceSo, what's the problem here?THE STORYYesterday evening (9 Jan, 2013), I got an e-mail from my Norwegian (online) buddy Stian Håklev (Co-founder of Peer2Peer University) informing me... Important Links:Chinese Translation of my presentationReport about the conference (Luoyang International School)Company: General Plan(Should the links above be deleted for some reason, please click here to view the presentation and report saved to Dropbox) WOW! Thanks, Stian for sharing this 'Pretty Hilarious' news with a 'CSI' kind of reporting of the event. Initially, I thought this whole thing was really cool, and I was kind of thrilled that someone would actually go to such lengths to reuse and translate slides that originated from me (WOW, the slides must be really good!). I have heard and read that translated plagiarism is a BIG BIG BIG PROBLEM in China, but not in my wildest dreams did I anticipate it would happen to me. Certainly, not like this. Let's break down the case.THE CASEI first gave the 'DNA of a 21st Century Educator' talk during the ''Annual Teaching and Learning Seminar 2012" at USM on the 26 June, 2012. However, the slides that have been reused and translated are from the second version, which was published 19 July (2012) on SlidesShare. Here is my original version: DNA of a 21st Century Educator (v2) from Zaid Alsagoff Since, the Chinese version was presented on the 17 October (2012), we can presume based on existing evidence that I am more likely the author. Also, based on the time between both these events (19 July - 17 October), 'Mr. Copytran' (Code name for the author(s) of the Chinese version) had more than sufficient time to translate the presentation slides to Chinese. The English version has 81 slides compared to 28 slides for the Chinese version. Interestingly, 26 (out of 28) or 92.85% of the Chinese version seems to be visually similar compared to the English version. However, we have to give credit to some critical thinking taking place here, as the 26 slides have been filtered (from 81), shuffled and organized a bit differently compared to the English version. Moreover, unless Mr. Copytran used only Google translate (or outsourced the translation), he/she/it/they must have spent considerable time to translate these 26 slides, which I assume requires masterful language ability. Though, since my Chinese is practically zero, I would need some expert to verify this. Also, we have to give credit to Mr. Copytran for showing amazing ability to manipulate, redesign and delete important aspects of the 26 slides that will be revealed one-by-one next.SLIDE-BY-SLIDE Here we go:Yes, the 'DNA' word has moved from one side to the other (Originality?). Also, the Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0) license has simply vanished from all 26 slides. Also, you notice that the IMU logo(s) are no longer there.  Interestingly (red arrow), the 'General Plan' logo appears for the first time. As we explore these slides, you will notice that this logo will appear, disappear and even move during its journey over 26 slides. I assume the 'General Plan' logo is suffering from some kind of appearance disorder (perhaps feeling guilty, or perhaps wanting to be associated with important slides and points).   You notice the logo has repositioned itself on slide 2, as if it is the solution to the question (Say no more!). Besides the translations, not much more to say. Awesome slide, though! I can't believe that the LIC Facebook poll slide, identifying what (a few) members of this group think are the ingredients of a 21st Century educator was translated. Mr. Copytran please explain; "Why did you include this one?"  Kudos! I mean, I just reused a stunning mind map explaining Howard Gardner's '5 Minds for the Future'. Mr. Copytran on the other hand, must have spent considerable time translating and manipulating the image. Also, he didn't delete the links (URLs) to the relevant resources, which is good. Though, if he did, surely someone would question Mr. Copytran how he managed to visualize the mind map so nicely.  Same old story (as slide 4)! Same old story (as slide 4)! Same old story (as slide 4)!  Still wondering why 'Route 21' was deleted from the Chinese version? No clues at the moment!Oops, I mashed up that graphic in 2009 (Evidence) based on Lucifer Chu's wise words during his Keynote at the 2nd International Conference of e-Learning hosted by UiTM (ICEL 2009). So, Mr. Copytran, how did you develop this graphic? You certainly don't have any reference links to support your case, if you didn't develop it. Notice that the logo has reappeared and moved strategically beyond my comprehension to a new location. No doubt, my original slide looks better, right? Jane Hart, congratulations for getting your slide translated!  WOW! Historic moment! Could this be a break through? Oops, back to basics. Steve Wheeler, congratulations for getting your slide translated! Now, the logo appears again and has amazingly moved again, too. It is as if the logo is playing a hide-and-seek game with us. Correct me if I am wrong! I was really happy with this mash-up of mine, and 'Yes' Mr. Copytran does provide a link to my blog post, so thanks for the reference. It is nice to reference our own work, but even better when others reference our own reference. What do you think?  Prof. Rozhan, congrats! Now, your 3-dimensial Technogogy diagram has been translated and hopefully it will be explored further in China.  Mr. Copytran, not a bad translated copy of the original one. What software do you use to edit graphics?  Same old story! This is getting boring! Yes, the logo appears again, and believe it or not, it has repositioned itself again, too. Amazing! Back to basics! Thanks for the translation! Jackie Gerstein, congratulations! Your diagram has been translated! Thanks for including this slide, because this is the one that enlightened Stian Håklev to discover the rest.  No comment! This is where I draw the line. Where is your reference to my 'Recap'? Also, why is the logo suddenly appearing again? At least this time it appears the same place as the last time.Of course there is much more, Mr. Copytran you still have another 55 potential slides (81 - 26 = 55) to translate. LOL! I just can't believe that you can't even create your own 'Q&A' slide! Take a risk and use your imagination a bit. Come on! Is that too much to ask for?Is this a case of Plagiarism? Please share your views.MY CASE VERDICTSeriously, Mr. Copytran you must have spent hours translating and manipulating this presentation to meet your desired goals. We should be celebrating your effort for all your hard work? However, that might not be the case, especially if this story goes viral in a negative sense. Maybe, in your mind you didn't do anything wrong, and just maybe you had every right to do what you did.I am actually not bothered by you reusing the 26 slides from my presentation (That is why I share!), but I am angry and irritated based on the observations shared above that you seem to have deliberately plagiarized some of my content, ideas and recommendations, without giving any form of recognition for it. Also, when I read the Google translated version of the conference report, my ego of any doubt vanished (like the CC license did in your slides).  Didn't you realize that the 'DNA of a 21st Century Educator' (version 2) presentation has been viewed more than 31,000+ times by now? Actually, by day 3 or 4 (after publishing it on SlideShare - 19 July) it had already been viewed more than 15,000+ times (was featured as 'Top Presentations of the day'), and cited by numerous of bloggers and educators around the world through varies social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, blog posts, etc).More importantly, didn't you realize that this presentation has been published under a Creative Commons license (Attribution - NonCommercial - ShareAlike or CC BY-NC-SA) empowering anyone for free to reuse and remix for non-commercial reasons with attribution. Most of my learning articles, presentations and artifacts since 2008 have been published with such a license, and hundreds of educators around the world have been reusing or remixing them as they like (with attribution), and that is one major reason why I love to share. However, when a person representing a corporate e-Learning company (General Plan) literally takes my presentation (or 26 slides from it), and presents it at a conference (translated version) without giving any credit (at least on the slides). And then has the cheekiness to put his company logo, and even delete the Creative Commons license from all the 26 slides translated, is something that I find really unacceptable. It might be flattery (to some), but it is also totally against any principles of professionalism (that I know of). The best way (in my opinion) to deal with people with such integrity and professionalism is to expose them to the world and remind others that doing such things are not worth the risk.  I can go on, but then again perhaps 'Mr. Copytran' did no wrong. In the 21st century you can easily copy or plagiarize, but you can easily get caught, too. And you certainly can't hide online for that long! That is for sure!  Why potentially waste your career and credibility just for one presentation? What were you thinking?

16 LEARNING TRENDSHere are 16 learning trends that I believe we simply can't ignore in 2013 and beyond: 16 Learning Trends, We Simply CAN'T Ignore! from Zaid AlsagoffBy 'WE', I mean all educators in primary, secondary, and tertiary (and even corporate) education. Whether, we like it or not, these 16 learning trends (some have been around for donkey years, but are beginning to really take off now) will have an increasingly impact on the way we learn. Some will have more impact than others (depending upon your context), and some of these trends I might have gotten completely wrong (too bad!).More importantly, as the public begin to embrace these learning trends on a large scale, there will become an increasingly loud cry from them for quality improvements and disruptive changes in all levels of education. Are you ready for that?     MISSING ONES?And some learning trends I have perhaps overlooked (or ignored, because I think their are just fads), or simply missed out (still learning). If there are any learning trends that you would like to suggest, or add to these 16 highlighted, please post your thoughts in the comments section below, or via Twitter (and Facebook).  I have only tried to include learning trends that I personally think will still be relevant 2-5 years down the road, too. NEXT STEPFirst, this presentation must be the shortest slide-deck I have ever published on SlideShare (Congrats)! Secondly, I will hopefully create a  narrated version of this presentation that explores and tries to makes sense of these 16 learning trends (or more) in my own words soon...Stay tuned for that in the coming weeks.  Time to rethink education and learning? What do you think? :)

THE OER WORKSHOPThis 1-day workshop on Open Educational Resources (OER) will (Insya-Allah) be facilitated at the Third International Conference of e-Learning and Distance Education (eLi13) in Saudi Arabia on the 3rd February,  2012. It will equip participants with the necessary knowledge to find, reuse, remix, create and strategize OER for their institution. During the first two sessions, we will explore and discuss together the concept of OER, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Creative Commons (CC), business models, and variety of OpenCourseWare (OCW) case studies and content development tools. In the third session, participants will be required to work in groups (hands-on) to conceptualize an OER strategy. In the final session, we will discuss how to move forward with OER at our institutions. After completing this workshop, you will be able to:Discuss the benefits and challenges of reusing/remixing/creating OER.Select the appropriate Creative Commons license (6 types) for your content development needs.Find OER and OCW using a variety of search tools.Identify a variety of web 2.0 and Social Media tools to develop OER with; andConceptualize an OER strategy for your institution.PRESENTATION SLIDES The OER Workshop at #eLi3! from Zaid Alsagoff CHALLENGE The group project challenge will only be revealed during the workshop. Stay tuned! RESOURCES All the resource links for the presentation will be made available here during the workshop.REFLECTION POINTSThis workshop is usually facilitated over two days, so it will be interesting to see whether it can be done effectively over one day. The presentation slides have been slimmed down from 214 to 164 (minus 50 slides), so that should help a bit. However, what really matters is not what we slide through, but what participants learn, can do, and how inspired they are to explore OER further after the workshop that really matters. Soon, we will find out, Insya-Allah :)

This Wiki workshop was conducted on the 11th February (2013) at Jazan University. WIKI WORKSHOPWikis empowers us with the ability to collaborate online in developing websites and documents. In this workshop, we will explore how we can use wikis with our students to facilitate collaborative online learning spaces. Wikis are great for group assignments and projects. During the hands-on activities, we will explore the wiki tools ‘Google Docs’ and ‘Google Sites’ for facilitating collaborative development of documents and websites respectively. LEARNING OUTCOMESAfter this workshop, you will be able to:Discuss how to use wikis to facilitate collaborative online learning and teaching.Use Google Docs for collaborative document development. Use Google Sites for collaborative website development.WIKI?Wiki is a Web site developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing any user to add and edit content.A website created by a group; rather than by an individual. In Hawaiian, Wiki means "quick"What I Know Is…  (descriptive of the process of collaborative content development.) ONE MILLION+ VIEWS!If this was a Gagnam Style, or Harlam Shake video viewing achievement, it would be nothing special (Just below average). Yes, if this was a Sneezing Baby Panda (155+ million views), or a YouTube viewing achievement, it would also not be much to celebrate (especially if you are uploading cute baby or puppy videos). But, having your educational content (currently 60 presentations) being viewed more than one million times on SlideShare is something worth celebrating a bit! Congrats, Zaid(Learn)! Al-Hamdullilah! Also, I would like thank everyone that has viewed any of my SlideShare presentations over the years, and more importantly hopefully you have learned something interesting, and better yet been able to use, or apply some of the ideas and resources shared into your learning and teaching environments. LEARNING ADVENTURE!WOW! I have to admit, my Saudi Arabia adventure from 31 January - 17 February (2013) was without doubt my most exciting LEARNING ADVENTURE in my life (up until now). It was action packed from day one (my luggage got lost and came nearly 2 days after me). During this adventure I facilitated 10 workshops and 3 lectures, participated in 1 panel discussion, attended 3 days of conference interacting with amazing minds, visited 2 Universities and 1 school, numerous social events,  and most importantly did a short Umrah. All this was done in about 2 1/2 weeks!!!Yes, it was a truly inspiring (and exhausting) learning adventure, Al-Hamdulilla! I would like to thank everyone that made it happen, and to avoid hurting anyone, I will not mention any names (to avoid missing others). Shukran Jazilan, Al-Hamdulilla!Instead of sharing stories for now (can probably write a 10,000 - 15,000 words essay, if I had the time), I will leave you with 580 pictures and 176 tweets to recap my inspiring and amazing learning adventure in Saudi Arabia.PHOTO ALBUMSHere are 580 pictures taken according to major events during this Saudi Arabia learning adventure:eLi 2013 Conference & Social Events (1-7 Feb, 2013)Pictures from the Third International Conference of e-Learning and Distance Education (eLi13) and related social events in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. During the conference, I facilitated two 1-day workshops (OER & iPad) and participated in one panel discussion sharing my L2T3SEA Learning Framework. It was an inspiring week of interacting with great learning minds and having fun, especially during the social events.Jazan University Adventure (8-13 Feb, 2013)Pictures from talks, workshops and social events at Jazan University in the city of Jazan, Saudi Arabia.Mecca Journey (14-15 Feb, 2013)Pictures from my short Umrah and In-House talk about '16 Learning Trends, We Simply Can't Ignore!" at Hasan Alfilaly's house in Mecca.Jeddah - In-House Talk (Feb 15, 2013)Gave a talk about '16 Learning Trends, We Simply Can't Ignore!" at Sheikh Ibrahim Alharthy's house in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.Al-Andalus School Visit & Talk (16 Feb, 2013)Pictures from my visit and talk about the 'DNA of a 21st Century Educator' (given at Jazan University, too) at Al-Andalus Private School in Jeddah. An inspiring school with innovative and passionate aspirations.TWEETSHere are all my 176 tweets (or Retweets) from the Saudi Arabia learning adventure (Tweetbook doesn't support Arabic!!!): Tweets: Saudi Arabia Learning Adventure! by   STORIESComing soon! I have a lot of interesting stories to share, but I will need to find time for that later. This portion will be updated in the coming weeks as I recall and reflect upon all the learning nuggets and wisdom I discovered during this adventure interacting with some pretty amazing learning minds. At the moment, I need to focus on other upcoming activities and events in coming weeks ahead.SUMMING UPIn general, Saudi Arabia is investing a lot of money to improve education for both men and women in the Kingdom. As I have visited Saudi Arabia five times since 2008 (four work related visits), I can testify to this based on my learning adventures, which includes visits to nine Universities during this period.Since its establishment in 2005, The National Center for e-Learning and Distance Learning (NeLC) has been passionately striving to support the universities around the Kingdom to transform their learning and teaching using technology and e-learning. The biggest challenge today in Saudi Arabia in terms of education, is not so much technology anymore, as most Universities are evolving fast on this frontier, and have enough funding to continue to have the latest technologies if wanted. If you ask me, the biggest challenges facing education in Saudi Arabia (like in so many other countries around the world), are inspiring educators (mindset change) in the Kingdom to transform their learning and teaching methods, and to empower them with the skills to use technology transformatively to design more engaging and effective student learning experiences. In today's disruptive global age of knowledge and innovation, we all have to continuously learn, rethink, innovate and adapt. It will be interesting to see how Saudi Arabia continues to evolve its education over the coming years.Insya-Allah, I can assist in this process, too :)
