Game-based learning is everywhere, but is it effective? Does it move the needle on performance and outcomes? Too often, games are added to learning experiences with the hope that engagement alone will lead to better outcomes. Hope is not a strategy. Game-based learning only moves the needle when it is intentionally designed around authentic practice, feedback, and decision-making tied directly to real-world performance.
In this session, Dr. Karl Kapp, on behalf of ELB Learning, cuts through the hype and tackles the question learning leaders are asking: when does game-based learning actually improve results, and when is it just busywork with a leaderboard? Kapp, Ed.D., is a professor of Instructional Design and Technology at Commonwealth University in Bloomsburg, PA and author of a dozen books on the convergence of learning, technology, games and interactive instruction including the best selling "The Gamification of Learning and Instruction" and the soon to be released "Action-First Learning: Instructional Design Techniques to Engage and Inspire."
