Description

When asked to identify the weakness in most e-learning, designers and students alike often note the failure to engage the learner’s attention as a chief problem. E-Learning is labeled boring; learners take the path of least resistance instead of thinking through the questions; completion is something to be checked-off a list rather than an indicator of proficiency. The problem is, “How do you motivate the learner while still doing the serious work of instruction?”

In e-learning, motivation for the learning must come primarily from the learners, themselves. Since most e-learning is done as a solitary event, we can’t rely on social interaction with an entertaining instructor or peers to motivate the learner. Nor can we rely on natural motivators in the work environment, as learners generally are removed from the familiar work environment and placed in whatever artificial and generic world is created by our designs for the computer-based experience.  And even worse, it is difficult to provide direct tangible rewards or public recognition for learning accomplishments since they have to be somewhat delayed from the learning actions that earned them.

In this webinar, Ethan Edwards will explore the importance of motivation in the design framework for e-learning and present rules for creating maximally motivating e-learning, which will be illustrated through several successful corporate e-learning courses. At issue will be considerations of content scope, difficulty, judgment, leveling, content placement, and user control.

In this webinar learn to:

  • Analyze the importance of motivation in an e-learning design framework
  • Apply six rules for creating maximally motivating e-learning solutions
  • Examine design considerations for content, scope, difficulty, judgment, leveling, content placement, and user control
