The times they are a changing (as the song goes)…and so are some leadership development trends and best practices in response to tremendous challenges in the last year. Sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic, spending on leadership development decreased as many organizations diverted funds to convert in-person training to virtual learning, Training magazine’s 2021 Annual Leadership Development Survey Report found. Social justice concerns helped to vault Diversity and Inclusion from 12th to third on the list of highest-ranked priority skills.
 
For the fifth year, Training magazine and Wilson Learning Worldwide teamed up to conduct the Annual Leadership Survey, which focuses on what organizations are doing to create effective leaders. The results of this survey, and the struggles of this past year, point out the fragility of leadership development in many organizations, as well as the incredible importance and strength of leadership development in others.

Lorri Freifeld is the Editor/Publisher of Training magazine, owned by Lakewood Media Group. She writes on a number of topics, including talent management, training technology, and leadership development. She spearheads two awards programs: the Training APEX Awards and Emerging Training Leaders Awards. A writer/editor for the last 30-plus years, she has held editing positions at a variety of publications and holds a Master’s degree in journalism from New York University.

Michael Leimbach, Ph.D., is Vice President of Global Research and Development for Wilson Learning Worldwide Inc. With more than 40 years in the field, Dr. Leimbach has developed Wilson Learning’s diagnostic, learning, and performance improvement capabilities and has managed major research studies in sales, leadership, and organizational effectiveness. He also developed Wilson Learning’s impact evaluation capability and return on investment models. Dr. Leimbach has served as a research consultant for a wide variety of global client organizations, is Editor-in-Chief for a major professional journal, and has served on the ISO Technical Committee on Quality Standards for Learning Service Providers. Dr. Leimbach has coauthored four books, published more than 100 professional articles, and is a frequent speaker at national and global conferences.
