Part 2: Organizational Network Analysis for Developing and Retaining Talent

As organizations implement matrix structures, establish virtual teams, and outsource functions, they are putting greater faith in informal networks to get work done. Unfortunately, leaders have less visibility into these informal networks.  As a result, they can make decisions with blinders on.  Organizational network analysis, ONA, provides a way to x-ray an organization, to illuminate and analyze the patterns of informal relationships that employees use to make decisions, solve problems and share information. Steve will introduce you to ONA and discuss how it can be used to identify emerging leaders, improve collaboration and innovation, develop talent, and increase retention.

About David Leaser

David Leaser is the senior program executive of strategic growth initiatives for IBM’s Training & Skills program. Leaser developed IBM’s first cloud-based learning solution and is the program developer for IBM’s new Open Badge program, a leading edge program to attract, engage and progress talent. Mr. Leaser is the author of a number of thought leadership white papers on talent development, including “Migrating Minds” and “The Social Imperative in Workforce Development.” Leaser has trained more than 4,000 clients and developed more than 30 training manuals and video tutorials.

About Stephen Garcia

Steve is a Managing Partner at CLA where he works with clients at the intersection of technology and organizational effectiveness. Prior to co-founding CLA, he served on the Senior Leadership Team in AlixPartners Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness practice and was the Partner in charge of Human Capital Consulting at Philosophy IB. At Philosophy IB, Steve built the firm’s first predictive people analytics applications, one of which, SYNAPP, was accepted into DreamIt Venture’s selective Accelerator Program. Previously, Steve was Head of Product Marketing for Nortel Networks’ digital switching, optical Ethernet, and voice-over-IP portfolios and worked on Capitol Hill for the U.S. Congress’ Office of Technology Assessment. Steve holds an M.B.A. from The University of Virginia and an Ed.D. in Adult Learning from N.C. State University where his research focused on how organizational networks affect learning, change and innovation. Steve is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters and a frequent presenter at professional conferences.

About Jane Bozarth, Ph.D.

A decade ago Jane Bozarth moved from the world of traditional instruction to designing and facilitating both asynchronous and synchronous training. Now that technology—and learner access to it—has finally caught up with possibilities, her interests have expanded to the world of social media tools to support and extend the work of the workplace training practitioner. She has an M.Ed. in Training & Development/Technology in Training and a doctorate in Adult Education. (Her dissertation, on workplace social learning/communities of practice, is available free via a Google search).+ You can find her "live" most anytime on Twitter @janebozarth and almost always on Thursday evenings as one of the moderators of the popular #lrnchat sessions.
