I had fun watching it the other night, seeing a rich mixture of animation, sound, visuals, stories, voices and special effects. So, what was the "behind-the-scenes" story about the creation of Monsters U, put together by Pixar, Disney and Skywalker Ranch?"Down in the production office, we have this very unique thing," said Ricky Nierva, the "Monsters University" production designer. "We have these scare canisters for every department, and there’s a light bulb, and as they get closer to 100 (percent finished), they turn a light bulb and the lights turn on. So if you’re 90 percent done, there’s one light bulb left, and then you know when they have that light bulb turning ceremony, and they turn that last one, you’re done. A hundred percent." 1. 30 Under 30 Learning Colleagues - Future Leaders! Who will be the next generation of Learning Leaders? We are pleased to announce the 30 Under 30 Program for Learning 2013 - to support, promote, mentor and expose the next generation of learning leaders and innovators.
Ninety young alumni from the previous 3 years have included rising leaders from organizations like NBCUniversal, LinkedIn, Southwest Airlines, Google, Genentech, Accenture, Farmers Insurance, IBM, Volkswagen, General Mills, Fidelity Investments, Wyndham Hotel Group, the National Weather Service and PwC. Participants will experience a special program at Learning 2013, including keynote speakers such as Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton, Actor George Takei, Journalist Jane Pauley and Open University of UK’s Martin Bean.

2. Pictures with Notes Increases Use and Circulation. There has been an intriguing shift in the world of note writing, which is the rising role of pictures. As people post notes on social media sites like Facebook, more and more notes include a picture - often taken recently on a mobile phone. In fact, over 70 percent of recent postings included a picture. And, the rate of note reading, on both social media and websites, goes up significantly when a picture is included. We are seeing this trend even with corporate notes and emails. One of my colleagues is CEO of a company and always includes a picture in notes that she circulates, adding a visual dimension.
We are also tracking increased circulation rates of notes that have pictures. It would be interesting to track the policy towards and use levels of pictures with notes in your organization.

1. TIRED LMS? Oh No!: As I talk with CLOs and learning colleagues around the world, a phrase has started to pop up:
"Our LMS feels TIRED!"
Many LMS installations are getting older, but more importantly, are not able to keep up with the evolving nature of learning content and learning choices. For example:
* Tweak Me Like an Amazon Ad!: Few Learning Systems can send highly personalized "ads" to learners - just like Amazon does - letting them know about a short video or PDF they may want to access based on their own learning history, preference or needs.* Video, Video and Video Content: Many organizations are seeing a 1,000% percent increase in the use of short, often user-created Video Segments, for learning and performance. Few LMS systems can go deep and track usage, departure points and user comments.

2. Internships: Wage and Legal Issues! I’m a lifelong fan of internships. I was an intern for many organizations while in college and have had over 50 interns over the years at The MASIE Center. Some get academic credit, some are paid, some are volunteers and most get intense experiences and mentorship.
We try to pay our interns where appropriate and avoid the "get me coffee" internship with low learning or content aspects.
There is a high energy conversation and set of conflicts brewing around unpaid internships. Some would argue that all interns should earn the going wage for a new employee. Others argue that the students should receive some of the tuition for credits they pay the college. And, others would like to alter the nature of internships. Some, like me, would like to see them expanded to "Apprenticeships" that would allow someone doing a mid-career shift to work for experience and mentoring - in a fair exchange.

2. 99 Second Talks - Awesome Short Content Segments: As we explore "Learning Compression", I have asked our design team to apply it to our Learning 2013 format. They came back with a new model: "99 Second Talks!"
We will have several Learning 2013 participants prepare high energy and 1-slide-only "Talks" that will last exactly 99 seconds on a single topic such as "Replacing Manuals with eBooks" or "Working for an Introverted Manager" or A Book That Changed My Thinking About Leadership". These will be interspersed into our General Sessions.

3. Embracing Failure! Over the weekend, I had the honor of moderating a panel of corporate leaders and entrepreneurs in a session for 70 graduate students from Asia, studying and working in NYC.
I decided to spice up the discussion by asking each panelist to detail the role that failure played in their career and business development. The conversations soared as each person talked about:
* A job that they had that was a major mistake or failure.* A business they started that lost a fortune and went belly-up.* A competency they thought they had - only to find out it was not their sweet spot.* A project plan that was totally off and had to be scrapped or redone from scratch.
The students were fascinated with hearing about Failure from people who have been quite successful in business. The whole room lit up as we openly discussed failure and the positive role it plays.
I love to talk about "Failing My Way to Success". Sometimes, we just get it wrong. And, we need to have the tools, trust and community to process failure into a personal or organizational "learnable" moment.
Failure is a key element in learning. We want to create learning processes that often allow or even encourage learners to fail their way to success - learning from the mistakes and shifting their skills or readiness appropriately. And as learning producers and designers, we need to see the developmental power of failure!

1. Susan Peters, GE - Lifetime Achievement Award! We are pleased to announce that we will honor Susan Peters, GE’s Vice President of HR and the former CLO, with the Learning 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award. Susan and her teams at GE are actively involved in transforming learning and leadership for their 320,000 employees around the globe. Recently, Susan led an update of their Crotonville campus, focusing on new mixes of learning and development for the leaders in GE.
Susan will be featured at Learning 2013, where I will interview her on the learning and development shifts that GE has been creating. 3. A Book to Read - Present Shock by Douglas Rushkoff: Just finished a book that you should try to read - "Future Shock: When Everything Happens Now" by Douglas Rushkoff. He relates the Ups, Downs and Uncertainties of operating in an "instant" world. Here is a quote that forced me wide awake:

2. Dennis Dammerman - Award Winner Passes: One of the great leaders in the world of business and human resources died on Tuesday. Dennis Dammerman, who was the CFO and Vice Chair of General Electric, passed away after a brilliant career in business and community service. Dennis received our Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 - honoring his amazing support for learning, development and talent at GE. Dennis was also a colleague and friend of mine, serving with me on the Skidmore College Board of Trustees.
When he received his award from us, I asked Dennis what he thought about the term ROI, as used in Learning. He smiled and said in his very direct and crisp way, "I don’t expect ROI from you learning folks. If I wanted a return in dollars, I would give to other groups. What I want from learning, is a return of Talent, Human Capital and Readiness to Perform and Grow."
Ironically, I was hosting a group of 40 rising executives from GE at our center yesterday and we were talking about Dennis, as an example of great leadership and concern for the growth of talent. I ended the meeting at 5 pm, walked upstairs to my office and got a note that Dennis had passed away. I returned to tell the visiting executives about the sad news. Dennis, you made a difference in the world of learning!

1. Memory in the Age of Google: How do our learners approach "memorizing" differently when the content is also online? When do we (and our learners) memorize at deep memory, at light memory, at recall, and when do we just want to know how to get to the knowledge - online at the moment of need.
I am delighted that one of my favorite researchers in this area, Betsy Sparrow from Columbia University, will be a keynote speaker on the opening night of Learning 2013 - exploring "Knowledge in the Age of Google." We will explore these key issues interactively with Betsy:
* How do we "talk about" different types of memory? When is something in deep, instant recall? When is it refreshable?* How are learners "sorting" knowledge when it is also online externally or on a Corporate Intranet?* If a learner can "look it up", are they less likely to memorize it?

1. George Takei CBS Interview! There was a great interview on CBS on Sunday with George Takei, our Learning 2013 Keynoter. George talks about his role as one of the most widely read and followed storytellers on Social Media and his family’s history at the internment camps. 2. First Days of Google Glass Experiments: For the past four days, I have been walking around New York City, Washington and Saratoga Springs wearing my new pair of Google Glass. The MASIE Center is experimenting with Google Glass to look for possible "affordances" that might surface for the learning, development and workplace performance world. I am also curious how it might apply to my Broadway investments as well. Here are some early observations:
* Fascinated to be able to watch and record video through Google Glass.* Many people freaked out and walking away from possible recording.* Calling up a Google Question and Site has been powerful - even adding walking directions.* Wish it worked with my 3G - when out of range of wireless.* The NY Times and Elle Magazine Apps are intriguing views of how content might appear.* Watch for "Driving while Glassing" stories soon.* Imagine how a learner might use it to drill down for more content.* What if a Mandarin speaker could watch Kinky Boots and get subtitles in Google Glass.* Weight Watchers will have a food recognition and in your ear whisper app soon.* Like all new tech, the apps and affordances follow.

1. Facebook: One-Size-Fits-One Learning: I was so impressed with the phrase that the Director of Learning at Facebook is using that it stopped me in my tracks:
"One-Size-Fits-One" Learning!
Stu Crabb, Facebook Director of Learning, along with Mike Rognlien, "Builder of Awesome Managers", will detail their shift in learning at a keynote at Learning 2013. "By ruthlessly prioritizing, saying NO to the ‘traditional’ demands of "training department" and really enabling people to own and drive their own development, Facebook’s L&D team is transforming what has traditionally been a curriculum-based approach to learning into one that is dynamic, current, and ‘One-Size-Fits-One’."

2. Adventure Based Learning - Re-branding: I just finished a short video on "Adventures & Learning". What if we packaged some of our courses, programs and "experiences" as adventures? I was impressed by a recent book on 1/2 day to 2 day Travel Adventures that one might do as a skill building activity - and wondered what it would be like if we applied that to our Learning Programs. Imagine if you offered a "Walk in the Shoes of the Customer at a Store" adventure. It is a fun concept, and I am wearing my new "adventure vest" in the video:

3. Find Me a Cool Bag, Please! I am bored with those black bags that we all get at conferences and seminars, which many of us leave in our hotel rooms. So, I asked my design team to come up with a very different, fun and high energy bag that reflected zip, brightness and would be brought home by participants - even to give to their kids.
