The Google Calendar Android and iOS apps have offered task reminder alerts for quite a while now. I certainly appreciate most of the reminders that pop-up on my phone. But I don't always have my phone next to me or have audible alerts turned on when I'm working on my computer. That forces me to look in my email for my task reminders or use Hashtag ToDo to add and see reminders in my web browser. Fortunately, Google announced today that over the next couple of weeks Google will be rolling-out a reminders feature in the browser-based version of Google Calendar.
The new reminders option in Google Calendar will let you create task reminders within the browser-based version of Google Calendar. Reminder tasks that you don't complete on a given day will automatically forward to the next day until you complete the task.
Applications for EducationFor students in school districts that are using Google Apps for Education, this new Calendar feature could provide a good way to keep track of homework assignments for each of their classes.

Tomorrow at 4pm Eastern Time I will be leading a free webinar on the topic of teaching search strategies to students. If your Google Apps for Education domain has recently switched to the new version of Google Forms, you might find yourself needing some time to find where all of your favorite features and settings are now hidden. The settings that you'll probably most concerned about when you switch are the access settings. In the video below I demonstrate where the access settings are located in the new version of Google Forms, how and why you might change them from the default settings, and how to revert to the old version of Google Forms if you need to.

The spring climbing season on Mount Everest and the surrounding peaks of the Himalaya is now upon us. As long-time readers of this blog may recall, one of my bucket list items is seeing Mount Everest in person. Until then I have to entertain myself with books, videos, and imagery of the mountain. Here are some of the resources that I like to consult when teaching students about Mount Everest and the area surrounding it.
Through Google's Street View imagery of Mount Everest Basecamp (south side) students can zoom and pan around the foothills of Mount Everest. Students viewing that imagery for the first time might be surprised at how different the view is compared the to the typical pictures of Everest. After viewing the imagery students can click forward to see Street View imagery of other places in the region.
Most educational resources give a very western perspective on Mount Everest. There's another side of Everest and that is the perspective of the Sherpa people who are native to the area and have climbed Everest more than any other group. Kraig Becker at The Adventure Blog shared a great BBC documentary about Sherpas who work with westerners on the mountain. You can watch the video below. Before showing the video to your students, you may want to remind them that Sherpa is an ethnic group, not a job title.
Glacier Works, Microsoft, and David Breashears collaborated to develop a great site called Everest: Rivers of Ice. Everest: Rivers of Ice is an interactive site that takes visitors on a virtual trek to Mount Everest base camp. There are eight stops along the way to base camp. At each stop viewers can explore panoramic images of valleys and glaciers. After completing the virtual trek to base camp viewers can compare the size of Himalayan glaciers in the 1920's to the size of those same glaciers today.
Panoramas.dk, hosts dozens of other interactive panoramas from around the world. Included in that list is a 360 degree interactive panoramic image taken from the peak of Mt. Everest. Using that panoramic image students can see what mountaineers see when they stand on the peak of Mt. Everest. The image includes views of the famous Khumbu valley as well as Everest's neighboring peaks Lhotse, Changtse, Makalu, and Nupste.
Snow in the Kingdom: My Storm Years on Everest by Ed Webster (a fellow Mainer) is one of the best books ever written about Mount Everest. If you enjoy good adventure stories and or stories about overcoming personal struggles, I think you will enjoy Webster's book. For my money, and I own two copies of it, it does a far better job of explaining how it feels to be on Mount Everest than any of the two dozen or so books that I've read about Mount Everest and the Himalaya.
Scaling Everest is an infographic that goes beyond the usual scale of Everest comparisons to buildings and jet flight paths. In the infographic you will find audio of three Everest climbers talking about the approach to Everest basecamp and the nuances of the climb itself. The infographic also provides some interesting facts about plants and animals in the region.

I run a lot of workshops for teachers and school administrators about using blogs and social media to connect with students and their parents. At the beginning of those workshops I almost always ask some variation of the question, "have you ever started a blog and then stopped using it?" Most of the time many people say yes. When I follow-up on that the reason I'm given more than any other is, "no one was reading it." There three things that anyone can do to get more people to consistently visit a blog.
1. Be helpful! If what you post on your school, library, or classroom blog is helpful to parents and students, they will come back to it consistently. Being helpful means solving problem for parents or giving students a handy tutorial. Being helpful does not mean simply reminding someone of a deadline because while that is mildly helpful, it's not the kind of thing that keeps someone interested in what you're sharing.
2. Be consistent. It is better to publish twice a week on the same day and time than it is to post five times at sporadic intervals. We're creatures of habit. Once we get in the habit of checking a blog on Monday and Thursday, we'll keep doing it. One of my favorite blogs is one that I don't even subscribe to because I know that every Tuesday and Sunday morning there will be a new post. Should you find yourself in need of blog topic ideas, check out these methods for developing blog post topics.
3. Say more! I see a lot of school blogs, particularly blogs created for faculty, that simply post a list of "interesting" links with a note like, "hey guys, check these out." Add a little original content to those links you're sharing. Tell your colleagues why you're sharing and why it should matter to them.

Seesaw is a fantastic tool for creating digital portfolios and blogs with your students. With the Seesaw mobile apps and web app students can upload digital artifacts as well as save pictures of physical work they've done. Once uploaded to their digital portfolios students can annotate items with text, drawings, and voice comments.
Portfolios that students create in Seesaw can be shared with teachers, peers, and parents. Recently, Seesaw added a new option for sharing portfolio artifacts. Students can now share individual portfolio items by printing items or by generating QR codes for individual items. To generate a QR code tap the "..." button in the bottom-right corner of the screen and then select "print" or "get item QR code."
Applications for Education
As the end of the school year approaches you may be preparing your students to share examples of their best work during a spring open house event. (Those were always my favorite nights in elementary school). If your students have been using SeeSaw to create portfolios, the new individual item printing and QR code option could provide a convenient way for students to share their examples of their best work.

Seesaw, a free digital portfolio platform, offers a handy instruction sheet to distribute to students to guide them in the process of joining your Seesaw classroom. That instruction sheet is available as a Google Document. If you want to edit it to better meet your needs and or share with your students to save in their Google Drive accounts, you will need to first save a copy of it in your Google Drive account. In the video embedded below I demonstrate how to make a copy of a public Google Drive file.

Earlier this week I shared a playlist of TED-Ed lessons about how the human body works. In responses to that playlist Lisa Winer sent me the suggestion to check out a TED-Ed lesson that she contributed to creating. That lesson is the Locker Riddle. In that lesson students have to use mathematics and logical reasoning to open a locker containing an inheritance.
The Locker Riddle is one of seven TED-Ed lessons that are based on riddles. All of the lessons challenge students to logical reasoning and mathematics to solve the riddle. The playlist of riddle-based lessons is embedded below.

Google Classroom has offered options for asking questions for quite a while. Today, Google released a new way to ask questions. You can now post multiple choice poll questions in your Google Classroom classrooms.
To post a poll in Google Classroom simply select the "add question" option in the lower-right corner of your Classroom screen, then select "multiple choice," and write your poll question. You can choose to let students see a summary of responses or you can hide the summary of responses.
Applications for Education
In their blog post announcing the new polling feature the Google for Education team suggested four ideas for using the polling feature in your classroom. Those four ideas are exit tickets, task completion monitoring, guiding discussions, and gather lesson feedback. Consult the Google for Education blog for more details on each use of polling.
